Extending the dynamic temperature range of Boltzmann thermometers

Lanthanide-doped(nano)crystals are an important class of materials in luminescence *** working mechanism of these thermometers is diverse but most often relies on variation of the ratio of emission intensities from two thermally coupled excited states with *** low temperatures,nonradiative coupling between the states can be slow compared to radiative decay,but,at higher temperatures,the two states reach thermal equilibrium due to faster nonradiative *** thermal equilibrium,the intensity ratio follows Boltzmann statistics,which gives a convenient model to calibrate the ***,we investigate multiple strategies to shift the onset of thermal equilibrium to lower temperatures,which enables Boltzmann thermometry in a wider dynamic *** use Eu^(3+)-doped microcrystals as a model system and find that the nonradiative coupling rates increase for host lattices with higher vibrational energies and shorter lanthanide-ligand distances,which reduces the onset temperature of thermal equilibrium by more than 400 *** additionally reveal that thermometers with excited states coupled by electricdipole transitions have lower onset temperatures than those with magnetic-dipole-coupled states due to selection *** insights provide essential guidelines for the optimization of Boltzmann thermometers to operate in an extended temperature range.

There is a rapidly growing demand to use silicon and silicon nitride（Si3N4） integrated photonics for sensing applications, ranging from refractive index to spectroscopic sensing. By making use of advanced CMOS technology,complex miniaturized circuits can be easily realized on a large scale and at a low cost covering visible to mid-IR wavelengths. In this paper we present our recent work on the development of silicon and Si3N4-based photonic integrated circuits for various spectroscopic sensing applications. We report our findings on waveguide-based absorption, and Raman and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Finally we report on-chip spectrometers and on-chip broadband light sources covering very near-IR to mid-IR wavelengths to realize fully integrated spectroscopic systems on a chip.

Heterosis is a biological phenomenon whereby the offspring from two parents show improved and superior performance than either inbred parental lines. Hybrid rice is one of the most successful apotheoses in crops utilizing heterosis. Transcriptional profiling of F1 super-hybrid rice Liangyou-2186 and its parents by serial analysis of gene expression （SAGE） revealed 1183 differentially expressed genes （DGs）, among which DGs were found significantly enriched in pathways such as photosynthesis and carbon-fixation, and most of the key genes involved in the carbon-fixation pathway exhibited up-regulated expression in F1 hybrid rice. Moreover, increased catabolic activity of corresponding enzymes and photosynthetic efficiency were also detected, which combined to indicate that carbon fixation is enhanced in F1 hybrid, and might probably be associated with the yield vigor and heterosis in super-hybrid rice. By correlating DGs with yield-related quantitative trait loci （QTL）, a potential relationship between differential gene expression and phenotypic changes was also found. In addition, a regulatory network involving circadian-rhythms and light signaling pathways was also found, as previously reported in Arabidopsis, which suggest that such a network might also be related with heterosis in hybrid rice. Altogether, the present study provides another view for understanding the molecular mechanism underlying heterosis in rice.
