Effects of early postnatal gastric and colonic microbiota transplantation on piglet gut health

Background Diarrhea is a major cause of reduced growth and mortality in piglets during the suckling and weaning p.riods and poses a major threat to the global pig *** and gut dysbiosis may in p.rt be prevented via improved early postnatal microbial colonization of the *** secure better postnatal gut colonization,we hypothesized that transplantation of colonic or gastric content from healthy donors to newborn recipients would prevent diarrhea in the recipients in the post-weaning *** objective was to examine the impact of transplanting colonic or gastric content on health and growth p.rameters and p.raclinical p.rameters in recipient single-housed piglets exposed to a weaning transition and challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC).Methods Seventy-two 1-day-old piglets were randomized to four groups:colonic microbiota transplantation(CMT,n=18),colonic content filtrate transplantation(CcFT,n=18),gastric microbiota transplantation(GMT,n=18),or saline(CON,n=18).Inoculations were given on d 2 and 3 of life,and all piglets were milk-fed until weaning(d 20)and shortly after challenged with ETEC(d 24).We assessed growth,diarrhea prevalence,ETEC concentration,organ weight,blood p.rameters,small intestinal morphology and histology,gut mucosal function,and microbiota composition and *** Episodes of diarrhea were seen in all groups during both the milk-and the solid-feeding phase,possibly due to stress associated with single ***,CcFT showed lower diarrhea prevalence on d 27,28,and 29 comp.red to CON(all pr ETEC prevalence on d 27(pr alpha diversity and a difference in beta diversity comp.red to CON(prowth and other p.raclinical endpoints were similar across *** In conclusion,only CcFT reduced ETEC-related post-weaning ***,the protective effect was marginal,suggesting that higher doses,more effective modalities of administration

We rep.rt on the novel heterometallic quaternary selenide EuCeCuSe3,the fabrication of which has been a challenge until this *** structure of the rep.rted selenide was elucidated from the powder X-ray diffraction data,which revealed the formation of EuCeCuSe3with excellent yield(96.7%)accompanied with a minor fraction of CeSe2(3.3%),and was best solved in orthorhombic space group pnma with the BaLaCuS3structural ***,the crystal structure of the title compound completes the row of the heterometallic quaternary selenides EurECuSe3(rE=La,pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er,Tm,Yb,Lu,Y),of which the cerium-based derivative exclusively belongs to the BaLaCuS3structural *** distortion of the CuSe4polyhedron was comp.red for the whole series of EurECuSe3compounds using theτ4-descriptor for four coordinated ions,which revealed the highest degree of distortion for the Ce3+-containing selenide,followed by the La3+-based ***,the crystallographic and geometrical p.rameters of the rep.rted selenide were discussed in comp.rison to the Ce3+-based sulfides SrCeCuS3and *** initio calculations of the crystal structure,a phonon spectrum and elastic constants for the crystal of EuCeCuSe3were also *** types and wavenumbers of fundame ntal modes were determined and the involvement of ions p.rticipating in the phonon modes was *** exp.rimental Ir spectrum of the rep.rted selenide was interpreted and found to be in agreement with the calculated *** exp.rimental direct band gap of EuCeCuSe3was measured to be 1.36 eV that is consistent with the concept of its origin due to interband transitions between orbitals emerging mainly from 4f(valence band)and 5d(conduction band)levels of the Eu2+*** dependence of the Young’s modulus on the direction demonstrates the anisotropy of the elastic prop.rties,while the Vickers hardness for EuCeCuSe3was calculated to be 5.2 ***,the title compound is p.ramagnetic above 4 K.

Various lines of evidence have been used to infer the origin of human bipedalism,but the paucity of hominoid postcranial fossils and the diversity of inferred locomotor modes have tended to confound the reconstruction of ancestral *** of the bony labyrinth morphology of the inner ear of extinct and living hominoids provides independent evidence for inferring the evolution of hominoid locomotor *** computed tomography data and morphometric analyses of the Late Miocene ape Lufengpithecus indicate that it and other stem great apes possess labyrinths similar to one another and show that hominoids initially evolved from a positional rep.rtoire that included orthogrady,below-branch forelimb suspension and progression,above-branch bipedalism,climbing,clambering,and leaping(hylobatid-like)to one that comprised above-branch quadrupedalism,below-branch forelimb suspension,vertical climbing,limited leaping,terrestrial quadrupedal running and walking,possibly with knuckle walking,and short bouts of bipedalism(chimpanzee-like).The bony labyrinth morphology of Lufengpithecus indicates that it probably conforms more closely to the last common ancestors of crown hominoids and hominids in its locomotor behavior than do other Miocene *** bipedalism evolved from this common archetypal Lufengpithecus-like locomotor *** low evolutionary rate of semicircular canal morphology suggests that Lufengpithecus exp.rienced a relative stasis in locomotor behavior,probably due to the uplift of the Tibetan plateau,which created a stable environment in the Miocene of southwestern China.

Metabolic syndrome and the urinary microbiome of patients undergoing p.rcutaneous nep.rolithotomy

Objective:To identify possible stone-promoting microbes,we comp.red the profiles of microbes grown from stones of patients with and without metabolic syndrome(MetS).The association between MetS and urinary stone disease is well established,but the exact pathophysiologic relationship.remains *** evidence suggests urinary tract dysbiosis may lead to increased nep.rolithiasis ***:At the time of p.rcutaneous nep.rolithotomy,bladder urine and stone fragments were collected from patients with and without *** sample types were subjected to expanded quantitative urine culture(EQUC)and 16 S ribosomal rNA gene ***:Fifty-seven patients included 12 controls(21.1%)and 45 MetS patients(78.9%).Both cohorts were similar with respect to demographics and non-MetS *** controls had uric acid stone *** EQUC,bacteria were detected more frequently in MetS stones(42.2%)comp.red to controls(8.3%)(p=0.041).Bacteria also were more abundant in stones of MetS patients comp.red to *** validate our EQUC results,we p.rformed 16 S ribosomal rNA gene *** 12/16(75.0%)sequence-positive stones,EQUC reliably isolated at least one species of the sequenced *** were detected in both“infectious”and“non-infectious”stone ***:Bacteria are more common and more abundant in MetS stones than control *** findings supp.rt a role for bacteria in urinary stone disease for patients with MetS regardless of stone composition.

Background:There is mounting evidence that regular physical activity is an imp.rtant prerequisite for healthy cognitive ***,the finding that almost one-third of the adult population does not reach the recommended level of regular physical activity calls for further public health *** this context,digital and home-based physical training interventions might be a promising alternative to center-based intervention ***,this systematic review aimed to summarize the current state of the literature on the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on adult cognitive ***:In this pre-registered systematic review(prOSp.rO;ID:CrD42022320031),5 electronic databases(pubMed,Web of Science,psyclnfo,Sp.rTDiscus,and Cochrane Library)were searched by 2 independent researchers(FH and pT)to identify eligible studies investigating the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on cognitive p.rformance in *** systematic literature search yielded 8258 records(extra17 records from other sources),of which 27 controlled trials were considered *** reviewers(FH and pT)independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and rep.rting in EXercise(TESTEX scale).results:Of the 27 reviewed studies,15 rep.rted positive effects on cognitive and motor-cognitive outcomes(i.e.,p.rformance improvements in measures of executive functions,working memory,and choice stepping reaction test),and a considerable heterogeneity concerning study-related,population-related,and intervention-related characteristics was noticed.A more detailed analysis suggests that,in p.rticular,interventions using online classes and technology-based exercise devices(i.e.,step-based exergames)can improve cognitive p.rformance in healthy older *** one-half of the reviewed studies were rated as having a high risk of bias with respect
