Combining spatial modelling and radar to identify and protect avian migratory hot-spots

Migrating landbirds are known to follow coast lines and concentrate on peninsulas prior to crossing water bodies, es- pecially during daylight but also at night, creating enhanced potential collision hazards with man-made objects. Knowing where these avian migration ＂hot-spots＂ occur in time and space is vital to improve flight safety and inform the spatial planning process （e.g. environmental assessments for offshore windfarms）. We developed a simple spatial model to identify avian migration hot- spots in coastal areas based on prevailing migration orientation and coastline features known, from visual and radar observations, to concentrate migrating landbirds around land masses. Regional scale model validation was achieved by combining nocturnal passerine movement data gathered from two tier radar coverage （long-range dual-polarization doppler weather radar and short- range marine surveillance radar） and standardised bird ringing. Applied on a national scale, the model correctly identified the ten most important danish coastal hot-spots for spring migrants and predicted the relative numbers of birds that concentrated at each site. These bird numbers corresponded well with historical observational data. Here, we provide a potential framework for the es- tablishment of the first three-dimensional avian airspace sanctuaries, which could contribute to more effective conservation of long-distance migratory birds [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 680-691, 2014].

Gliomas are the most common form of central nervous system tumor. The most prevalent form, glioblastoma multiforme, is also the most deadly with mean survival times that are less than 15 months. Therapies are severely limited by the ability of these tumors to develop resistance to both radiation and chemotherapy. Thus, new tools are needed to identify and monitor chemoresistance before and after the initiation of therapy and to maximize the initial treatment plan by identifying patterns of chemoresistance prior to the start of therapy. Here we show how magnetic resonance imaging, particularly sodium imaging, metabolomics, and genomics have all emerged as potential approaches toward the identification of biomarkers of chemoresistance. This work also illustrates how use of these tools together represents a particularly promising approach to understanding mechanisms of chemoresistance and the development individualized treatment strategies for patients.

Biotransformation of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate(6:2 FTS)by two species of white-rot fungi,Pleurotus ostreatus(***)and Trametopsis cervina(***),was investigated in a sulfurrich medium designed to stimulate production of lignin-degrading *** of 6:2 FTS was observed by *** over the study period of 30 d,but not by *** rates were comparable to those found in other studies investigating mixed culture degradation in nonsulfur limiting media,with approximately 50 mol%of applied 6:2 FTS removed after 30 *** transformation products were short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids(PFCAs),including PFHxA(2.27 mol%),PFPeA(0.24 mol%),and PFBA(0.28 mol%).The main intermediate products include 5:2 sFTOH(16.3 mol%)and 5:3 FTCA(2.99 mol%),while 6:2 FTCA,6:2 FTuCA,and 5:2 ketone were also identified at low *** 60 mol%of detected products were assigned to the major pathway to 5:2 ketone,and 40 mol%were assigned to the minor pathway to 5:3 *** overall molar balance was found to decrease to 75 mol%by day 30,however,was closed to near 95 mol%with a theoretical estimation for the volatile intermediates in the headspace,5:2 ketone and 5:2 *** different capabilities of the two white-rot fungal species for 6:2 FTS biotransformation in sulfur-rich media suggest that the enzyme processes of *** to de-sulfonate 6:2 FTS may be unrelated to sulfur metabolism.

Evaluation measures play an important role in the design of new approaches, and often quality is measured by assessing the relevance of the obtained result set. While many evaluation measures based on precision/recall are based on a binary relevance model, ranking correlation coefficients are better suited for multi-class problems. State-of-the-art rank- ing correlation coefficients like Kendall＇s T and Spearman＇s p do not allow the user to specify similarities between differ- ing object classes and thus treat the transposition of objects from similar classes the same way as that of objects from dissimilar classes. We propose ClasSi, a new ranking corre- lation coefficient which deals with class label rankings and employs a class distance function to model the similarities between the classes. We also introduce a graphical representation of ClasSi which describes how the correlation evolves throughout the ranking.

A range of brominated flame retardants(BFRs)have been incorporated into polymeric materials like plastics,electronic equipment,foams and textiles to prevent *** most common of these,polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBdEs),have been subject to legislated bans and voluntary withdrawal by manufacturers in North America,Europe and Australia over the past decade due to long-range atmospheric transport,persistence in the environment,and *** has shown that replacement novel brominated flame retardants(NBFRs)are released to the environment by the same mechanisms as PBdEs and share similar hazardous *** objective of the current research was to characterize soil contamination by NBFRs in the urban soils of Melbourne,Australia.A variety of industrial and nonindustrial land-uses were investigated with the secondary objective of determining likely point sources of *** NBFRs;pentabromotoluene(PBT),pentabromoethylbenzene(PBEB),hexabromobenzene(HBB),2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate(EH-TBB),1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane(BTBPE)and decabromodiphenyl ethane(dBdPE)were measured in 30 soil samples using selective pressurized liquid extraction(S-PLE)and gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry(GC-MS/MS).NBFRs were detected in 24/30 soil samples with S5NBFR concentrations ranging from nd-385 ng/g *** was the most frequently detected compound(14/30),while the highest concentrations were observed for dBdPE,followed by *** waste recycling and polymer manufacturing appear to be key contributors to NBFR soil contamination in the city of Melbourne.A significant positive correlation between S8PBdEs and S5NBFR soil concentrations was observed at waste disposal sites to suggest that both BFR classes are present in Melbourne's waste streams,while no association was determined among manufacturing *** research provides the first account of NBFRs in Australian soils and indicates that these emerging con

Recording neural signals from delicate autonomic nerves is a challenging task that requires the development of a lowinvasive neural interface with highly selective,micrometer-sized *** paper reports on the development of a three-dimensional(3d)protruding thin-film microelectrode array(MEA),which is intended to be used for recording low-amplitude neural signals from pelvic nervous structures by penetrating the nerves transversely to reduce the distance to the *** gold pillars(O 20 or 50μm,~60μm height)were fabricated on a micromachined polyimide substrate in an electroplating *** sidewalls were insulated with parylene C,and their tips were optionally modified by wet etching and/or the application of a titanium nitride(TiN)*** microelectrodes modified by these combined techniques exhibited low impedances(~7 kΩ at 1 kHz for ∅ 50μm microelectrode with the exposed surface area of~5000μm^(2))and low intrinsic noise *** functionalities were evaluated in an ex vivo pilot study with mouse retinae,in which spontaneous neuronal spikes were recorded with amplitudes of up to 66μ*** novel process strategy for fabricating flexible,3d neural interfaces with low-impedance microelectrodes has the potential to selectively record neural signals from not only delicate structures such as retinal cells but also autonomic nerves with improved signal quality to study neural circuits and develop stimulation strategies in bioelectronic medicine,e.g.,for the control of vital digestive functions.

The lithium-sulfur(Li-S)technology is the most promising candidate for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical specific energy and steady progress for applications requiring lightweight batteries such as aviation or heavy electric *** these applications,however,the rate capability of Li-S cells requires significant *** electrolyte formulations in Li-S batteries enable new pathways for cell development and adjustment of all ***,their rate capability at pouch cell level is often neither evaluated nor compared to state of the art(SOTA)LiTFSI/dimethoxyethane/dioxolane(LITFSI:lithium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide)***,the combination of the sparingly polysulfide(PS)solvating hexylmethylether/1,2-dimethoxyethane(HME/dME)electrolyte and highly conductive carbon nanotube Buckypaper(CNT-BP)with low porosity was evaluated in both coin and pouch cells and compared to dimethoxyethane/dioxolane reference *** advanced sulfur transfer melt infiltration was employed for cathode production with *** Li+ion coordination in the HME/dME electrolyte was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and Raman ***,ionic conductivity and viscosity was investigated for the pristine electrolyte and a polysulfide-statured *** electrolytes,dME/dOL-1/1(dOL:1,3-dioxolane)and HME/dME-8/2,are then combined with CNT-BP and transferred to multi-layered pouch *** study reveals that the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte increases drastically over state of(dis)charge especially for dME/dOL electrolyte and lean electrolyte regime leading to a better rate capability for the sparingly polysulfide solvating *** evaluation in prototype cells is an important step towards bespoke adaption of Li-S batteries for practical applications.
