Introduction:Tidal marsh systems along the pacific coast of the United States have experienced substantial stress and loss of area and ecosystem function,which we examined by using the endangered California Ridgway’s Rail,Rallus obsoletus obsoletus(‘rail’)as an indicator of its tidal marsh habitat in the San Francisco *** organized a collection of historical(1885-1940)and modern(2005-2014)rail feathers and analyzed the feather isotope means for delta carbon(δ^(13)C),sulfur(δ^(34)S),and nitrogen(δ^(15)N)by region and time ***:Feather isotopes represented the primary foraging habitat during historical then modern time *** individual nor regional rail feather isotopes suggested freshwater or terrestrial foraging by the *** regions with both historic and modern feather isotopes revealed non-uniform spatial shifts in isotope levels consistent with a marine based food web and significantδ^(15)N ***:Our results supported the rail’s status as a generalist forager and obligate tidal marsh species throughout the historic *** variable isoscape trends generated from feather isotope means illustrated a modern loss of the isotopic homogeneity between regions of historical tidal marsh,which correlated with spatially-explicit habitat alterations such as increasing biological invasions and sewage effluent over ***:These findings have reinforced the importance of tidal marsh conservation in the face of ongoing underlying changes to these important ecosystems.

Anemia and immunological dysfunction(***)are commonly found in older subjects and nutritional approaches are sought to counteract these *** is a filamentous and multicellular bule-green alga capable of reducing inflammation and also manifesting antioxidant *** hypothesized that Spirulina may ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence in senior citizens with a history of *** enrolled 40 volunteers of both sexes with an age of 50 years or older who had no history of major chronic *** took a Spirulina supplementation for 12 weeks and were administered comprehensive dietary questionnaires to determine their nutritional regimen during the *** cell count(CCC)and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase(IDO)enzyme activity,as a sign of immune function,were determined at baseline and weeks 6 and 12 of *** study participants completed the entire study and the data obtained were *** the 12-week study period,there was a steady increase in average values of mean corpuscular hemoglobin in subjects of both *** addition,mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration also increased in male *** women appeared to benefit more rapidly from Spirulina ***,the majority of subjects manifested increased IDO activity and white blood cell count at 6 and 12 weeks of Spirulina *** may ameliorate anemia and immunosenescence in older *** encourage large human studies to determine whether this safe supplement could prove beneficial in randomized clinical trials.

On February 16, 2016, the 21st Draper prize for Engineering was awarded by the US National Academy of Engineering to Dr. Andrew J. Viterbi, of the Viterbi Group, for the creation of the Viterbi Algorithm that is used by the great majority of mobile phones today. This algorithm helped make cell phones practical by focusing on the most likely computing paths in mobile and satellite communications, thereby facilitating the suppression of static in transmissions. This award represents the second rec- ognition of the enormous impact of mobile communications, following the 2013 award to Martin Cooper, Joel S. Engel, Richard H. Frenkiel, thomas Haug, and Yoshihisa Okumura for their con- tributions to the world＇s first cellular telephone networks. The Draper prize is one of the world＇s premier prizes for engineering and technology and celebrates innovations that improve the hu- man condition [1 ].

Sustainability describes a broad set of themes centered on current human uses of the planet’s *** multiple uses and users of the term have led to a proliferation of salient issues and associated *** present a new method to systematically link these issues and indicators under two conceptual frameworks of sustainability in order to enable quantitative *** demonstrate this approach with a specific use case focused on the global sourcing of agricultural *** use the optimization software Marxan in a novel way to develop minimum sets of indicators that provide maximum coverage of sustainability *** covering sets were identified and accumulation curves were developed to measure the contribution of each indicator in each set to overall issues *** greater detail in the assessment of each indicator would likely provide more effective sets of indicators,those that were generated provide optimism that this approach can bring better focus to sustainability assessments.

“Well-Track”: Fitbit Based physical Activity and Sleep Hygiene Intervention for Early Intervention in psychosis (EIp) and At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) Service patients

Background: Compared to the general population, people who are at a high risk of or experience severe mental illness (SMI) such as psychosis, are more likely to have low levels of physical activity, high levels of sedentary behaviour, and sleep problems. Intervention: The Well-Track intervention comprises a wearable activity and sleep tracker (Fitbit);one session with mental health service staff providing physical activity and sleep hygiene advice;a brief motivational interview;completing a goal setting workbook;and one or two further engagement, feedback and discussion sessions. participants: Twenty-four participants using an early intervention in psychosis (EIp) or at-risk mental state (ARMS) service completed an eight-week, three session intervention (14 males and 10 females), with an age range of 18 - 61, and average age of 27.75 years. Methods: An open-label patient cohort design with no control group. pre-intervention, 4-week and 8-week intervention assessments using participant self-report measures: patient Health Questionnaire (pHQ-9) (depression), Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), and Sleep Conditioning Index (SCI);and clinician measurement of body weight. Results: Mean scores showed a significant improvement in pHQ-9 from 9.29 (SD 5.89) to 5.58 (SD 3.68) at 4 weeks and to 5.83 (SD 4.40) at 8 weeks, with large effect sizes. For those who met a diagnosis of depression at baseline, at 4 week follow-up seven participants (26%) experienced remission and nine (33%) reliable improvement, and at 8 week follow-up four (21%) experienced remission and seven (37%) reliable improvement. WEMWBS scores significantly improved, from 44.04 (SD 9.44) to 48.54 (SD 8.71) at 4 weeks and to 48.67 (SD 8.76) at 8 weeks, with large effect sizes. Body weight did not change significantly, remaining unchanged at 4 weeks and reduced from a mean of 82.8 kg (baseline) to 80.15 kg at 8 weeks, a reduction of 2.65 kg. The addition of organoclay to a polypropylene-rubber (pp-rubber) blend, primarily introduced to compatibilise the immiscible polymer blend, invokes contrasting dielectric and charge dynamic behaviour depending on the filler loading level. The authors report that at 0.5 wt.% loading, the organoclay decreases the DC conductivity, causes no significant dielectric losses, makes no significant difference to the space charge results compared to the unfilled system, and increases the reproducibility of the breakdown strength results, and hence the reliability of the material. These somewhat surprising results, contrasted by measurements of samples with 2.5 and 5 wt.%, lead us to conclude that trace amounts of organoclay improve the otherwise immiscible polymer blend making organoclay a suitable additive for HVDC applications.
