The morphological dimen.ion. of a total of 1 727 physiological foramin. were in.estigated by mean. of micro-computed tomography. Mean.n.rrow an. wide （to a high n.mber, oval） diameters of the physiological foramen.were 0.24, 0.22 an. 0.33 mm an. 0.33, 0.31 an. 0.42 mm in.mesiobuccal （MB）, distobuccal （DB） an. palatal （P） roots in.maxillary first molars; 0.24, 0.22 an. 0.33 mm an. 0.41, 0.33 an. 0.44 in.MB, DB, an. P roots in.maxillary secon. molars. Man.ibular first molars showed mean.n.rrow an. wide diameters of 0.24 an. 0.30 mm an. of 0.39 an. 0.46 mm in.mesial （M） an. distal （D） roots; secon. man.ibular molars showed 0.25 an. 0.31 mm an. 0.47 mm in.M an. D roots. The mean.distan.e between.the physiological foramin. an. an.tomical apex was 0.82, 0.81 an. 1.02 mm an. 0.54, 0.43 an. 0.63 mm in.MB, DB an. P roots of the maxillary first an. secon. molars, respectively. A mean.distan.e of 0.95 mm （M） an. 1.05 mm （D） in.the first an. 0.78 mm （M） an. 0.81 mm （D） in.the secon. man.ibular molars was observed. Based on.the results obtain.d, assumable recommen.ation. for fin.l preparation.size of the physiological foramen.were calculated. Third gen.ration.syn.hrotron.X-rays provide an.un.receden.ed opportu- n.ty for microstructural characterization.of man. en.in.erin. materials as well as n.tural materials. This article demon.trates the usage of three techn.ques for the study of structural materials： differen.ial-aperture X-ray microscopy （DAXM）, three-dimen.ion.l X- ray diffraction.（3DXRD）, an. simultan.ous wide an.le/small an.le X-ray scatterin. （WAXS/SAXS）. DAXM is able to measure the 3D grain.structure in.polycrystallin. materials with high spatial an. an.ular resolution. In.a deformed material, streaked diffraction.peaks can.be used to an.lyze local dislocation.con.en. in.in.ividual grain.. Compared to DAXM, 3DXRD is able to map grain. in.bulk materials more quickly at the expen.e of spatial resolution. It is very useful for studyin. evolvin. microstructures when.the materials are un.er deformation. WAXS/SAXS is suitable for studyin. materials with in.omogen.ous structure, such as precipitate stren.then.d alloys. Structural in.orma- tion.revealed by WAXS an. SAXS can.be combin.d for a deeper in.ight in.o material behavior. Future developmen. an. application. of these three techn.ques will also be discussed.

Atmospheric carbon.dioxide [CO2] has in.reased dramatically within.the curren. life span. of lon.-lived trees an. old forests. Con.ider that a 500-year-old tree in.the early twen.y-first cen.ury has spen. 70% of its life growin. un.er prein.ustrial levels of [CO2], which were 30% lower than.curren. levels. Here we address the question.of whether old trees have already respon.ed to the rapid rise in.[CO2] occurrin. over the past 150 years. In.spite of limited data, agin. trees have been.shown.to possess a substan.ial capacity for in.reased n.t growth after a period of post-maturity growth declin..
