Landslide susceptibility mapping using the infinite slope,ShALSTAB,SINMAP,and TRIGRS models in Serra do Mar,Brazil

Slope failure triggered by heavy rainfall is very common in tropical and subtropical regions and a cause of major social and economic *** susceptibility maps can be generated using geographical information systems(GIS)and limit equilibrium slope stability models coupled or not to hydrological *** study investigated the efficacy of four models used for slope stability analysis in predicting landslide-susceptible areas in a GIS *** selected models are the infinite slope,the shallow slope stability model(ShALSTAB),the stability index mapping(SINMAP),and the transient rainfall infiltration and grid-based regional slope-stability(TRIGRS).for comparisons,the authors(a)included the infinite slope equation in all models,(b)clearly defined input parameters and failure triggering mechanisms for each simulation(soil depth,water table height,rainfall intensity),(c)determined appropriate values for each model to obtain stability levels that represented similar hydrogeotechnical conditions,and(d)considered upper-third areas of landslide scars to estimate the reliability of susceptibility maps using validation *** intense rainfall event occurred in Serra do Mar,Brazil in January 2014 triggered hundreds of landslides and was used for back analysis and evaluation of the slope stability analysis *** rainfall intensity is not considered,the four models produced very similar *** most reliable landslide susceptibility map was generated using TRIGRS and considering the granite residual granite soils geological-geotechnical unit,subjected to a rainfall intensity of 210 mm for 2 h under unsaturated conditions.

An invariant descriptor for conjugate forced convection-conduction cooling of 3D protruding heaters in channel flow

In this research, the temperatures of three- dimensional （3D） protruding heaters mounted on a conductive substrate in a horizontal rectangular channel with laminar airflow are related to the independent power dissipation in each heater by using a matrix G＋ with invariant coefficients, which are dimensionless. These coefficients are defined in this study as the conjugate influence coefficients （g＋） caused by the forced convec- tion-conduction nature of the heaters＇ cooling process. The temperature increase of each heater in the channel is quantified to clearly identify the contributions attributed to the self-heating and power dissipation in the other heaters （both upstream and downstream）. The conjugate coefficients are invariant with the heat generation rate in the array of heaters when assuming a defined geometry, invariable fluid and flow rate, and constant substrate and heater conductivities. The results are numerically obtained by considering three 3D protruding heaters on a twodimensional （2D） array by ANSYS/fluentTM 15.0 software. The conservation equations are solved by a coupled procedure within a single calculation domain comprising of solid and fluid regions and by considering a steady state laminar airflow with constant properties. Some examples are shown, indicating the effects of substrate thermal conductivity and Reynolds number on conjugate influence coefficients.

Associations of sense of coherence with psychological distress and quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease

Relationship between Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (C677T), factor V Leiden (G1691A), Prothrombin Mutation (G20210A) and Severe Preeclampsia in a Brazilian Population

Objectives: To better understand the etiologic factors that can influence preeclampsia, we inves- tigated hereditary factors for thrombosis, fV Leiden, f II 20210A mutation and the polymorphism C677T of the MThfR, as singly and as in association, in a group of women from Ceará state-Northeast Brazil with severe preeclampsia. Material and Methods: We conducted a case-control study. 101 cases of severe preeclampsia were recruited from School Maternity Assis Chateaubriand, a reference Maternity of State of Ceará, Brazil, from December 2009 to December 2010. for clinical correlations, women were interrogated about fetal low weight (less than2500 grams) and fetal loss in previous pregnancies. Low weight, fetal loss and necessity of neonatal intensive care unit (neonatal ICU) related to current pregnancy were registered. 245 healthy voluntary women were recruited from the blood bank donors to verify the frequency of fV Leiden, fII and MThfR as a control group. The study was approved by the Committee on Ethics in human Research of Maternidade Escola Assis Chateubriand and all individuals gave their informed consent to participate in the study. Standard veinipuncture, with EDTA as anticoagulant, was used to collect blood samples. Genomic DNA was extracted, soon after, using a salting out method. Agarose gel electrophoresis with ethidium bromide staining was performed to ensure the quality of DNA extraction. Results: The frequencies of fV Leiden and fII mutation carrier were 0.99% (1/101) for both factors in the preeclampsia patients and 1.86% (4/214) and 0.93% (2/214), respectively, in control group. All mutates were heterozygous and concomitance of both mutations was not found. The genotype distribution of the MThfR C677T in the patients and controls frequencies was in hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p ≤ 0.05). Methodology of the Tetrazolium Test for Evaluating Physiological Quality in Pitaya (<i>hylocereus undatus</i>) Seeds

The germination test is routinely used for evaluating physiological quality of seeds, but it has not been satisfactory, since it requires relatively long periods to obtain results. In this sense, there is the possibility to resort to vigor tests, although the absence of standardized methodologies has hindered your applicability and reproducibility. The goal of the present study was to establish a methodology for the tetrazolium test that is effective for evaluating physiological quality in pitaya seeds. So, we used five seed batches obtained from mature fruits of pitaya (hylocereus undatus), harvested in the years of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The experimental design was the completely randomized design, with four replicates of 50 seeds. The tetrazolium test was conducted in a 5 × 4 × 3 factorial plot, corresponding to five batches of pitaya seeds (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012), four concentrations of the tetrazolium solution (0.075%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%) and three immersion periods (2, 3, and 4 h). In addition, the germination test for the seed batches was carried out and the analyzed variables were: percentage of germination (PG), germination speed index (GSI) and mean germination time (MGT). Data were submitted to ANOVA and means were compared by the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). Tetrazolium test conducted at a solution concentration of 0.5% and an immersion period of 3 h proved to be efficient for evaluating physiological quality of pitaya seeds, in order to stratify the seed batches into more viability levels compared to the germination test.

Conocarpus erectus L., a plant with a high content of structural sugars, ions and phenolic compounds, shows antioxidant and antimicrobial properties promoted by different organic fractions

Objective: To evaluate the structural and chemical composition of plant and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities promoted by hexanic, ethanolic and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus ***: Organic fractions were characterized through UPLC-MS and *** potential was performed through DPPh and molybdenum phosphate *** and antifungal assays were performed in accordance with Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute ***: The obtained biomass of Conocarpus erectus leaves showed the high presence of glucose(0.45 g/L), cellulose(28.69%), Na(55.126 μg/L) and K(31.163 μg/L).We identified seven compounds in the hexanic and ethyl acetate fractions, and eight compounds in ethanolic ***, phenolic compounds are prevalent in all organic fractions with values of(10.04 ± 0.24),(221.26 ± 1.84),(340.53 ± 0.84) mg/g GAE to hexanic, ethyl acetate and ethanolic fraction, *** results showed a high potential in ethyl acetate fraction(71.82 ± 6.87)% and(10.89 ± 0.05)% in DPPh and molybdenum phosphate techniques, *** ethanolic fraction showed moderate bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus and presented a high fungistatic potential for all Candida species ***: Organic fractions obtained from leaves of Conocarpus erectus present antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and these findings contribute to scientific information for the effectiveness on use of this plant in the development of a phytotherapic compound.

Tertiary peritonitis: A disease that should not be ignored

Intra-abdominal infections can be classified into uncomplicated or complicated(peritonitis). Peritonitis is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary. Tertiaryperitonitis is the less common but the most severe among peritonitisstratifications, being defined as a recurrent intra-abdominal infection that occurs48 h after a well-succeeded control of a secondary peritonitis. This disease has acomplex pathogenesis that is closely related to the capacity of the peritonealcavity to activate immunological processes. Patients who progress to persistentperitonitis are at an increased risk of developing several infectious complicationssuch as sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome. Moreover, tertiary peritonitisremains an important cause of hospital death mainly among patients withassociated risk factors. The microbiological profile of organisms causing tertiaryperitonitis is often different from that observed in other types of peritonitis. Inaddition, there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing thiscondition, and an appropriate and successful clinical management depends on anearly diagnosis, which can be made easier with the use of clinical scorespresenting a good prediction value during the intensive care unit ***, immediate therapy should be performed to control theinfectious focus and to prevent new recurrences. In this sense, the treatment isbased on initial antimicrobial therapy and well-performed peritoneal drainage.

The cotton plant is a plant belonging to the family Malvaceae and its leaves are often used in folk medicine. The present study aimed to evaluate the mutagenic or antimutagenic activity of the ethanolic extract of Gossypium barbadense L. (EEG) and to analyze its capacity to prevent or repair mutagenic lesions caused by cyclophosphamide (CP). for the Micronucleus test, Swiss mice were divided into 5 groups: negative control;Positive control: treated with 50 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (CP), group receiving EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days;Group receiving EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days associated with CP24h before euthanasia;Group who received CP and EEG 500 mg/kg for 7 days. After the treatment period, the animals were euthanized, the bone marrow removed and the blood smear prepared. from this analysis, it was observed that the EEG caused a significant increase in the number of micronucleated erythrocytes, indicating mutagenic activity of the extract. In addition, it was verified that the extract did not present the capacity to prevent, but it presented the capacity of repair of the chromosomal damages caused by CP.
