Hepcidin expression in colon during trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats

AIM:To investigate hepcidin expression,interleukin-6(IL-6)production and iron levels in the rat colon in the presence of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid(TNBS)-induced ***:In rats,we evaluated the severity of colitis induced by repeated TNBS administration using macroscopic and microscopic scoring systems and myeloperoxidase activity *** colonic levels of hepcidin,tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α),IL-10 and IL-6 were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay,and hepcidin-25 expression and iron deposition were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and the Prussian blue reaction,***-3 phosphorylation was assessed by Western blot *** parameters,iron and transferrin levels,and transferrin saturation were also ***,the ability of iron,pathogen-derived molecules and IL-6 to induce hepcidin expression in HT-29 cells was ***:Repeated TNBS administration to rats resulted in macroscopically and microscopically detectable colon lesions and elevated colonic myeloperoxidase ***-25 protein levels were increased in colonic surface epithelia in colitic rats(10.2±4.0pg/mg protein vs 71.0±8.4 pg/mg protein,P<0.01).Elevated IL-6 levels(8.2±1.7 pg/mg protein vs 14.7±0.7 pg/mg protein,P<0.05),TNF-αlevels(1.8±1.2pg/mg protein vs 7.4±2.1 pg/mg protein,P<0.05)and Stat-3 phosphorylation were also *** alterations in iron homeostasis,hepcidin levels and anemia were not detected in colitic *** deposition in the colon was only observed during *** gene expression was increased in HT-29 cells after IL-6 and lipopolysaccharide[a toll-like receptor 4(TLR-4)ligand]***,ferric citrate and peptidoglycan(a TLR-2 ligand)were unable to alter the in vitro expression of hepcidin in HT-29 ***:Colitis increased local hepcidin-25 expression,which was associated with the IL-6/Stat-3 signaling *** increase in local iron sequestration was also

Air transport systems are highly dynamic at temporal scales from minutes to *** dynamic behavior not only characterizes the evolution of the system but also affect the system＇s *** the evolutionary mechanisms is thus fundamental in order to better design optimal air transport networks that benefits companies,passengers and the *** this review,we briefly present and discuss the state-of-the-art on time-evolving air transport *** distinguish the structural analysis of sequences of network snapshots,ideal for long-term network evolution（*** evolution）,and temporal paths,preferred for short-term dynamics（*** evolution）.We emphasize that most previous research focused on the first modeling approach（***-term） whereas only a few studies look at high-resolution temporal *** conclude the review highlighting that much research remains to be done,both to apply already available methods and to develop new measures for temporal paths on air transport *** particular,we identify that the study of delays,network resilience and optimization of resources（aircraft and crew） are critical topics.

Pesticides in a temperate coastal lagoon in southwest Europe (Ria de Aveiro, Portugal) – Risk assessment and acute assays with Artemia and Daphnia

The Ria de Aveiro lagoon has been considered one of the most important Southern European long-term monitoring sites(LTER-site)concerning climate change and anthropogenic ***,studies concerning pesticide contamination herein are few and mostly ***,56 pesticides dissolved in the aqueous phase(DAP)and suspended particulate matter(SPM)were examined to fill the knowledge gap,considering the hydrophobic nature of most evaluated *** samples were taken seasonally from eight sites,and both DAP and SPM fractions were analysed by gas-chromatography-mass *** annual average concentrations of fungicides,herbicides and insecticides were≈57 ng/L,≈409 ng/L and≈1058 ng/L in DAP and≈7μg/g,≈28μg/g and≈67μg/g in *** pesticides and the excessive phosphate concentrations suggest that the lagoon's water quality may be hazardous to biota and *** were identified as the most threatened trophic level using deterministic risk assessment,with chlorpyriphos and chlorfenvinphos being the primary *** experiments with Artemia and Daphnia supported the suppositions.

Rheological and stability analysis of cement pastes incorporating silica-based wastes

This study investigates the influence of waste characteristics,especially zeta potential,on the properties of cement pastes and *** focus is to evaluate the impact of the zeta potential of cement particles and waste materials on the sedimentation speed,rheology,and hardening time of stabilized cement *** Cement II F 40,retarder additive,silica,and fly ash were used in the *** pastes were prepared,and during the stabilization period,their rheological properties and pH were *** zeta potential and sedimentation speed of the cement and waste particles were measured at the pH that the pastes presented during the entire stabilization *** the stabilization period,the pastes were subjected to the hardening time *** zeta potential analyses revealed diverse values for the different powder types,with the cement particles exhibiting a zeta potential of−3.0 mV,the silica particles exhibiting−10.5 mV,and the fly ash particles exhibiting−20.3 *** influence of the high zeta potential modulus was observed on the sedimentation speed,with the solution containing fly ash exhibiting a speed of 40.01μm/s,whereas the solution containing only cement exhibited a speed of 99.38μm/*** the pastes,the results indicate that the presence of fly ash particles with a significantly negative zeta potential led to a 16%reduction in hardening time compared to particles with a lower modulus of zeta *** tests showed that the inclusion of fly ash particles prevented the formation of *** the zeta potential influenced agglomerate formation and hardening time,it was found to have no effect on yield stress or viscosity.

Presbyopia corrections traditionally have been approached with attempts to exchange power,either at the cornea or the lens planes,inducing multifocality,or altering asphericity to impact the optical *** that affect the visual axis,such as spectacle and contact lens correction,refractive surgeries,corneal onlays and inlays,and intraocular lenses are typically unable to restore true accommodation to the presbyopic *** aim is instead to enhance‘pseudoaccommodation’by facilitating an extended depth-of-focus for which vision is *** is a true lack of technology that approaches presbyopia from a treatment based or therapy based solution,rather than a‘vision correction’solution that compromises other components of the optical *** surgical procedures seek to restore true accommodation combined with pseudoaccommodation and have several advantages over other more invasive options to treat *** the theoretical justification of scleral surgical procedures remains controversial,there has nevertheless been increasing interest and evidence to support scleral surgical and therapeutic approaches to treat *** progress in scleral surgery techniques and understanding of the mechanisms of action have been achieved since the 1970s,and this remains an active area of *** this article,we discuss the historic scleral surgical procedures,the two scleral procedures currently available,as well as an outlook of the future for the scleral surgical space for treating presbyopia.

Water yield and biomass production for on a eucalypt-dominated Mediterranean catchment under different climate scenarios

Worldwide,forests are vital in the regulation of the water cycle regulation and in water balance *** of ecohydrological responses of production forests is essential to support management strategies,especially where water is already *** climatological patterns are expected to impact thermopluviometric regimes,water cycle components,hydrological responses,and plant physiology,evapotranspiration rates,crop productivity and land management *** work(1)assessed the impacts of different predicted climate conditions on water yield;(2)inferred the impacts of climate change on biomass production on eucalypt-to-eucalypt succes *** this end,the widely accepted Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was run with the RCA,HIRHAM5 and RACMO climate models for two emission scenarios(RCP 4.5 and8.5).Three 12-year periods were considered to simulate tree growth under coppice *** results revealed an overall reduction in streamflow and water yield in the catchment in line with the projected reduction in total annual ***,HIRHAM5 and RACMO models forecast a slight shift in seasonal streamflow of up to 2 months(for2024-2048)in line with the projected increase in precipitation from May to *** biomass production,the extreme climate model(RCA)and severe emis sion scenario(RCP 8.5)predicted a decrease up to 46%.However,in the less extreme and more-correlated(with actual catchment climate conditions)climate models(RACMO and HIRHAM5)and in the less extreme emission scenario(RCP 4.5),biomass production increased(up to 20%),and the growth cycle was slightly *** was proven to be a valuable tool to assess climate change impacts on a eucalypt-dominated catchment and is a suitable decision-support tool for forest managers.

Denitrification-nitrification process in permeable coastal sediments:An investigation on the effect of salinity and nitrate availability using flow-through reactors

Permeable coastal sediments act as a reactive node in the littoral zone,transforming nutrients via a wide range of biogeochemical *** rates are controlled by abiotic factors,e.g.,salinity,temperature or solute ***,a series of incubation experiments,using flow-through reactors,were conducted to simulate the biogeochemical cycling of nitrate (NO_(3)^(-)) and phosphorus(P)in permeable sediments under different NO_(3)^(-) availability conditions(factor I)along a salinity gradient(admixture of river and seawater,factor Ⅱ).In an oligotrophic scenario,i.e.,unamended NO_(3)^(-) concentrations in both river and seawater,sediments acted as a permanent net source of NO_(3)^(-) to the water *** peak production rate occurred at an intermediate salinity(20).IncreasingNO_(3)^(-) availability in river water significantly enhanced netNO_(3)^(-) removal rates within the salinity range of 0 to 30,likely via the denitrification pathway based on the sediment microbiota *** this scenario,the most active removal was obtained at salinity of *** both river and seawater were spiked with NO_(3)^(-),the highest removal rate switched to the highest salinity(36).It suggests the salinity preference of the NO_(3)^(-) removal pathway by local denitrifiers(e.g.,Bacillus and Paracoccus)and that NO_(3)^(-) removal in coastal sediments can be significantly constrained by the dilution related NO_(3)^(-) *** with the obtained variation for NO_(3)^(-) reactions,permeable sediments acted as a sink of soluble reactive P in all treatments,regardless of salinity and NO_(3)^(-) input concentrations,indicating a possibility of P-deficiency for coastal water from the intensive cycling in permeable ***,the net production of dissolved organic carbon(DOC)in all treatments was positively correlated with the measured NO_(3)^(-) reaction rates,indicating that the DOC supply may not be the key factor for NO_(3)^(-) removal rates due

The intestinal microbiota and its role in health and disease processes have been the subject of several *** is known that changes in the intestinal microbiota occur due to several factors,such as the use of medication,age,lifestyle and diseases,which can modify intestinal homeostasis and lead to excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine,triggering a clinical condition called small bowel bacterial overgrowth(SIBO).Individuals with SIBO may present gastrointestinal symptoms ranging from nausea,diarrhea and/or constipation,and flatulence to distension and abdominal pain,resulting from poor absorption of nutrients or changes in intestinal *** gold-standard treatment is based on the use of antibiotics to eradicate bacterial *** studies have evaluated diets in the treatment of SIBO;however,the studies are of low methodological quality,making extrapolation of the results to clinical practice ***,there is still not enough scientific evidence to support a specific type of diet for the treatment of SIBO.

Preliminary results of a new intrastromal corneal ring segment as a tissue saving procedure in photorefractive keratectomy to correct moderate to high myopia

AIM:To evaluate the clinical results after implantation of a new intrastromal corneal ring segment(ICRS)associated with photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)to correct high myopia(HM)patients with thin ***:We evaluated 42 eyes of 23 HM patients that had ICRS implantation followed by *** mean age of patients was 29.1±7.12 y(range 18 to 40 years old).Uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA),best corrected visual acuity(BCVA),keratometry,spherical equivalent,pachymetry,and aberrometry were compared using ANOVA with repeated measurements evaluated preoperatively and at last follow-up visit after the *** refractive predictability and simulated/real corneal ablation were also ***:The mean follow-up time after PRK was 6.8±1.6 *** mean preoperative UCVA improved from 20/800 preoperative to 20/100 after ICRS and 20/35 after *** mean preoperative BCVA was 20/25(range from 20/30 to 20/20)and remained unchanged after ICRS *** the PRK the mean BCVA was 20/25(range from 20/30 to 20/20).The mean spherical equivalent decreased from-7.25±1.12(range-5.00 to-9.00)preoperatively to-3.32±1.0(range-2.00 to-5.00)postoperatively(P<0.001)after ICRS implantation and decreased from-2.44±1.51 preoperatively to 0.32±0.45(range-0.625 to 0.875)postoperatively(P<0.001)after *** change in BCVA and topographic astigmatism was statistically significant(P<0.0001).CONCLUSION:ICRS in HM associated with PRK can be a tissue saving procedure and an alternative surgical option for correction of moderate to high myopia.
