Outlook of future climate in northwestern Ethiopia

Climate change is described as the most universal and irreversible environmental problem facing the planet Earth. While climate change is already manifesting in Ethiopia through changes in temperature and rainfall, its magnitude is poorly studied at regional levels. The objective of this paper was to assess and quantify the magnitude of future changes of climate parameters using Statistical Downscaling Mode (SDSM) version 4.2 in Amhara Regional State which is located between 8°45‘N and 13°45‘N latitude and 35°46‘E and 40°25‘E longitude. Daily climate data (1979- 2008) of rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures were collected from 10 observed meteorological stations (predictand). The stations were grouped and compared using clustering and Markov chain model, whereas the degree of climate change in the study area was estimated using the coupled HadCM3 general circulation model (GCM) with A2a emission scenarios (Predictors). Both maximum and minimum temperatures showed an increasing trend;the increase in mean maximum temperature ranges between 1.55°C and 6.07°C and that of the mean minimum temperature ranges from 0.11°C and 2.81°C. While the amount of annual rainfall and rainy days decreased in the study Regions in the 2080s. The negative changes in rainfall and temperature obtained from the HadCM3 model in the current study are alarming and suggest the need for further study with several GCM models to confirm the current results and develop adaptation options.

Structural Traits,Structural Indices and Body Weight Prediction of Arsi Cows

Structural measurements are indicators of animal performance,productivity and carcass *** study was conducted with the objectives of assessing structural measurements,developing body weight prediction and structural indices for cows of Arsi *** cows were purchased from highland and lowland agro-ecologies of Arsi and East Shoa zones of Oromia regional state,Ethiopia and kept in Adami Tulu Agricultural Research Center(ATARC)for the breed development *** 222 cows were included in the structural traits *** four young heifers were also considered in the *** two structural traits were considered during observational *** structural index was calculated from the phenotypically correlated linear *** traits were analyzed by T-test of SPSS version twenty *** observed average values of height at wither,chest depth,heart girth,body length,pelvic width,cannon bone circumferences of the cows were 107,55.62,141.06,117.82,31.41 and 13.58cm,*** girth(0.82),flank girth(0.73),hook circumferences(0.67),chest depth(0.65)and height at rump(0.64)were highly correlated(P<0.01)to body weight of the *** analysis indicated that hearth girth had the highest coefficient of determination for body weight of the cows and ***,the simple linear equations were developed to predict the body weight of cows and *** weight of Arsi cow(y)=-221.005+3.1(heart girth)and Body weight of Arsi heifer(y)=-188.452+2.75(heart girth).Based on this,the measuring chart tape can be developed to estimate the body weight of Arsi cows and heifers at field condition where there is no access to weighing scales.

A Comparative Study between Intravenous Fentanyl and Intravenous Lidocaine on Attenuation of Hemodynamic Pressor Responses to Laryngoscopic Intubation: A Prospective Cohort Study, Ethiopia

Introduction: Laryngoscopic intubation is an insertion of endotracheal tube into the trachea for maintenance of airway during general anesthesia. Smooth intubation requires attenuation of pressor responses and maintenance of baseline hemodynamic stability. The primary outcome of this study is to compare intravenous fentanyl and lidocaine as an anesthetics adjuvant on attenuation of hemodynamic pressor responses to Laryngoscopic intubation in elective surgical adult patients. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruits 114 patients who underwent elective surgery under general anesthesia with laryngoscopy and endotracheal tube intubation. The study was conducted from January 1, 2018 to March 30, 2018. Systemic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Those patients that received intravenous fentanyl 2 micrograms per kilogram three minutes before intubation as an anesthetics adjuvant are considered as Fentanyl-group (group F). The Lidocaine-group (group L) was those patients who receive 2% intravenous lidocaine 1.5 milligrams per kilogram three minutes before intubation as anesthetics adjuvant. Hemodynamic parameters (heart rate and blood pressure) and other variables were documented starting from 3 minutes before intubation to 5 minutes after intubation. Results: The mean heart rate at first minute after intubation was significantly lower in fentanyl group (98.91 ± 15.6 beats per minute (bpm)) compared to lidocaine (107 ± 15.45 bpm), t (112) = 2.8, p = 0.006. Systolic blood pressure was also significantly lower in fentanyl group (141.9 ± 18.9 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)) compared to lidocaine (150 ± 18.098 mmHg), t (112) = 2.45, p = 0.016 at first minute after intubation. At third minute after intubation, heart rate was significantly lower in fentanyl group compared to lidocaine, t (112), p = 0.037. Grapevines(Vitis vinifera)are colonized by ubiquitous microorganisms known as endophytes,which may have advantageous or neutral effects without causing disease *** endophytes are uncultivable,so culture-independent approaches such as next generation sequencing(NGS)can help for a better understanding of their ecology and *** date,there are no studies which directly link NGS results with taxa derived from a culturing approach,integrating morphological and multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of *** this study,a culture-dependent and high-resolution culture-independent approach(next generation sequencing)were used to identify endophytes in grapevine *** the culture-dependent approach,a total of 94 isolates were recovered from 84 of 144 healthy grapevine stem fragments(colonization rate=58.3%).The study is unique as we used subsets of combined multi-gene regions to identify the endophytes to species *** on each multi-gene phylogenetic analysis,28 species belong to 19 genera(Acremonium,Alternaria,Arthrinium,Ascorhizoctonia,Aspergillus,Aureobasidium,Bipolaris,Botryosphaeria,Botrytis,Chaetomium,Cladosporium,Curvularia,Hypoxylon,Lasiodiplodia,Mycosphaerella,Nigrospora,Penicillium,Phoma,Scopulariopsis)were identified.A higher number of culturable fungi were obtained from 13 year-old vines,followed by eight and three yearold *** the culture-independent approach,a fungal richness of 59 operational taxonomic units(OTU)was detected,being highest in 13 year-old grapevines,followed by eight and three *** though the cultivation approach detected lower fungal richness,the results related to stem are consistent for fungal community composition and *** of the fungal taxa identified by the two approaches resulted in an overlap of 53%of the fungal *** to interspecific variability of the sequences from NGS,in many cases the OTUs(even with the highly abundant ones)were only assignable to order,family or genus

Phytochemical screening of the exudate of Aloe otallensis and its effect on Leishmania donovani

Objective:To evaluate the antileishmanial activity of methanolic extract of Aloe otallensis(***)on the promastigote stage of Leishmania donovani(***)as compared to standard drugs and to screen its phytochemical ***:Phytochemical screening was done by using the method mentioned by Evans and Trease on methanolic extract of the exudates of Aloe otallensis *** extract was also evaluated for in vitro antileishmanial activity against *** which is found from the Parasitology Unit of Black Lion *** result was compared to standard drugs of sodium stibogluconate,milfostin and ***:The extract has a good antileishmanial activity with an IC_(50)of 0.1230μg/mL on ***(AM 563).The experimental data showed that relatively it had better activity than paramomycin and milfostin but less activity than sodium *** data analyses were done by GraphPad Prism version 5 software after it was read by ELISA reader at the wave length of 650 *** phytochemical screening of the exudates of *** showed the presence of phenol,alkaloid and ***:The methanol extract of the exudates of *** has a good anti-leishmaniasis activity and this may be attributed to phenol,alkaloid and saponin present in the *** it needs further analysis for the conformation of which constituent presents in high concentration to know which one has the strongest effect.

Applicability of Galway River Flow Forecasting and Modeling System (GFFMS) for Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia

Flow forecasting is used in activities requiring stream flow data such as irrigation development, water supply, and flood control and hydropower development. Real time flow forecasting with special interest to flooding is one of the most important applications of hydrology for decision making in water resources. In order to meet flood and flow forecasts using hydrological models may be used and subsequently be updated in accordance with residuals. Therefore in this study, different flood forecasting methods are evaluated for their potential of stream flow forecasting using Galway River Flow Forecasting and Modeling System (GFFMS) in Lake Tana basin, upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia. The areal rainfall and temperature data was used for the model input. Three forecast updating methods, i.e., autoregressive (AR), linear transfer function (LTF) and neuron network updating (NNU) methods were compared for stream flow forecasting, at one to six days lead time. The most sensitive parameters were fine-tuned first and modeled for a calibration period of 1994-2004 for three selected watersheds of the Tana basin. The results indicate that with the exception of the simple linear model, an acceptable result could be obtained using models embedded in the software. Artificial neural network model performed well for Gilgel Abay (NSE = 0.87) and Gumara (NSE = 0.9) watersheds but for Megech watershed, SMAR model (NSE = 0.78) gave a better forecast result. In capturing the peak flows LTF and NNU in forecast updating mode performed better for Gilgel Abay and Megech watersheds, respectively. The results of this study implied that GFFMS can be used as a useful tool to forecast peak stream flows for flood early warning in the upper Blue Nile basin.

电力体制市场化的有序推进对工业园区负荷预测提出了新的要求。文章提出了基于深度学习与权值共享机理的负荷预测方法。在预测模型中,将深度神经网络设置为训练中的有监督学习方法,权值共享模式分析了多个目标之间的相关性,并使用各个目标的负荷变化率对相关度最高的任务聚合。算例中使用天津某高新区数据对算法有效性进行了验证,结果显示该算法有效提高了工业园区负荷预测的精度,有着较高的应用价值。

On-farm Evaluation and Demonstration of Different Feeding Treatment for Beef Cattle Fattening in Adami Tulu Jidokombolcha District, East Shoa Zone

Evaluation and demonstration study was conducted at Kemo-Gerbi kebele of Adami Tulu Jidokombolcha district on two to three year old Borana bulls with the objectives of evaluation and demonstration of bulls fattening technologies at on-farm *** farmer’s research extension group(FREG)was formed for fattening the *** bulls were purchased from Borana zone by farmers for the fattening *** feeding treatments(T1=crushed maize grain(20%)+wheat bran(45%)+35%Noug cake and T2=wheat bran(65%)+cotton seed cake(35%))were evaluated at *** hour grazing was common for both *** animals were randomly assigned for dietary rations and data on live weight change of the animals were taken using weight chart tape(developed by JICA project).Finishing weights,total weight gain and daily weight gain of the bulls were not different(P>0.05)between the *** fed on treatment one attained an average daily weight gain of 0.83 kg per bull;while bulls fed on treatment two gained 0.76 kg per bull per *** gross margin of treatment one(53,154.5 ETB)was higher than treatment two(49,467.75 ETB).Cost-benefit analysis showed that feeding option number one(T1)is more profitable than feeding option number two(T2).However,fatteners can use any of the feeding options depending on availability of the ingredients in their area.
