Tree Population Dynamics of Three Altitudinal Vegetation communities on Mount cameroon(1989-2004)

changes in permanent sample plots in the lowland,submontane and montane forests on Mount cameroon(4,095 m above sea level),an active volcano,are described for 15 years from 1989 to *** the study period,the stocking level of trees with a diameter at breast height(DBh) ≥ 10 cm in the three forests were lower than in pan-tropical stands suggesting a significant impact of volcanic and human-related activities on the vegetation communities on the *** mortality rates in the submontane and montane forests were consistent with those reported for comparable altitudinal ranges in the Blue Mountains of *** annual mortality rate was higher in the lowland forest than other lowland sites *** between recruitment and mortality rates was large suggesting that the three vegetation communities have not reached their *** seven-year difference in half-life of large trees(with a DBh ≥ 50 cm) in the submontane and montane forests suggests an altitudinal effect on turnover of larger trees that in turn contributes to the frequent small stature of high altitude *** was little evidence of an altitudinal effect on species turnover and growth *** finding supports generalizations about the zero effect of growth on the stature of high altitude *** forest dynamics is crucially important in the management of tropical montane environmentsand in this instance particularly so given the recent creation of the Mount cameroon National Park.

Existence of a hölder continuous Extension on Embedded Balls of the 3-Torus for the Periodic Navier Stokes Equations

This article gives a general model using specific periodic special functions, which is degenerate elliptic Weierstrass P functions whose presence in the governing equations through the forcing terms simplify the periodic Navier Stokes equations (PNS) at the centers of cells of the 3-Torus. Satisfying a divergence-free vector field and periodic boundary conditions respectively with a general spatio-temporal forcing term which is smooth and spatially periodic, the existence of solutions which have finite time singularities can occur starting with the first derivative and higher with respect to time. The existence of a subspace of the solution space where v3 is continuous and {c, y1, y12}, is linearly independent in the additive argument of the solution in terms of the Lambert W function, (y12=y2, c∈R) together with the condition v2=-2y1v1. On this subspace, the Biot Savart Law holds exactly [see Section 2 (Equation (13))]. Also on this subspace, an expression X (part of PNS equations) vanishes which contains all the expressions in derivatives of v1 and v2 and the forcing terms in the plane which are related as with the cancellation of all such terms in governing PDE. The y3 component forcing term is arbitrarily small in ε ball where Weierstrass P functions touch the center of the ball both for inviscid and viscous cases. As a result, a significant simplification occurs with a v3 only governing PDE resulting. With viscosity present as v changes from zero to the fully viscous case at v =1 the solution for v3 reaches a peak in the third component y3. consequently, there exists a dipole which is not centered at the center of the cell of the Lattice. hence since the dipole by definition has an equal in magnitude positive and negative peak in y3, then the dipole Riemann cut-off surface is c

Effects of chronic epilepsy on heart rate variability A case-control study

BAcKGROUND： Dysfunctional autonomic cardiac regulation is thought to be associated with high mortality in epileptic patients. OBJEcTIVE： To explore changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic activities in epileptic patients with repetitive generalized tonic-clonic seizures by observing interictal heart rate. DESIGN, TIME AND SEI-I＇ING： A case-control study was performed at the Buddhist Tzu chi General hospital from July 2006 to May 2009. PARTIcIPANTS： A total of 30 patients, comprising 15 males and 15 females, who presented with chronic epilepsy and repetitive generalized tonic-clonic seizures according to International League Against Epilepsy guidelines （ILAE, 1989）, were selected. In addition, 30 matched, healthy volunteers were selected as controls. METhODS： Lead I electrocardiogram was performed in the epilepsy and control groups for 5 minutes during a daytime interictal period. Frequency-domain analysis of heart rate variability was performed using fast Fourier transformation. MAIN OUTcOME MEASURES： heart rate interval, high frequency （hF; 0.15-0.45 hz） power, low frequency （LF; 0.04-0.15 hz） power, and LF/（hF ＋ LF） expressed in normalized units （LF%）. RESULTS： compared with the control group, the epilepsy group exhibited a significantly lower mean heart rate interval and hF power, but a significantly greater LF% （P〈 0.01）. There was no significant difference in LF power between the groups （P = 0.17）. cONcLUSION： Patients with chronic epilepsy exhibited faster heart rates during interictal periods, which could contribute to hiclher sympathetic and lower parasympathetic activities.

The induced path number p（G） of a graph G is defined as the minimum number of subsets into which the vertex set of G can be partitioned so that each subset induces a path. Broere et hi. proved that if G is a graph of order n, then 〈 p（G）＋ p（G）〈3n/2] . In this paper,_we characterize [3n/2], improve the lower bound on p（G）＋ p（G） by one when the graphs G for which p（G） -4- p（G） = 3n n is the square of an odd integer, and determine a best possible upper bound for p（G）＋ p（G） when neither G nor G has isolated vertices.

Differential impact of aging and gender on lipid and lipoprotein profiles in a cohort of healthy chinese Singaporeans

Aim： To evaluate the impact of age and gender on lipid and lipoprotein profiles and the burden of dyslipidemia in a cohort of healthy chinese Singaporean. Methods： A total of 1 775 healthy chinese, 536 men and 1 239 women aged between 30 and 70 years old were involved in the present study. Results： Gender differences in all lipid and lipoprotein levels were clearly evident. Singaporean chinese men have significantly higher levels of total cholesterol （Tc）, triglyceride （TG）, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol （LDL-c） and total cholesterol/high density lipoprotein-cholesterol （Tc/hDL-c）, and lower levels of hDL-c than women. Although lipid and lipoprotein levels in men did not change in the different age groups, those in women, especially Tc, LDL-c and Tc/hDL-c, were significantly higher in older women （〉 50 years old） than corresponding levels in younger women （30-46 years old）. Furthermore, TG was significantly correlated with lipids and lipoproteins differently in men and women. If 100 mg/dL of LDL-c were to be adopted as the therapeutic cut-off level, then the burden of care will be huge as approximately 90% of both chinese men and women have LDL-c greater than 100 mg/dL. condusion： In light of the findings of the present study, we suggest that preventive measures to promote the reduction in risk of coronary heart disease （chD） must address the high proportion of men and women with high LDL-c, and that these measures should take into account both the gender and age factors. For men, reduction of high cholesterol must start early in life, whereas for women, steps must be taken earlier to mitigate the anticipated sharp increase in risk, especially after menopause.

Improved thromboresistance and analytical performance of intravascular amperometric glucose sensors using optimized nitric oxide release coatings

In this work, nitric oxide （NO） release coatings designed for intravenous amperometric glucose sensors are optimized through the use ofa polylactic acid （PLA） layer doped with a lipophilic diazeniumdiolated species that releases NO through a proton-driven mechanism. An Elast-Eon E2As polyurethane coating is used to both moderate NO release from the sensor surface and increase the sensor＇s linear detection range toward glucose. These sensors were evaluated for thromboresistance and in vivo glucose performance through implantation in rabbit veins. By maintaining NO flux on a similar scale to endogenous endothelial cells, implanted glucose sensors exhibited reduced surface clot formation which enables more accurate quantitative glucose measurements continuously. An in vivo time trace of implanted venous sensors demonstrated glucose values that correlated well with the discrete measurements of blood samples on a benchtop point-of-care sensor-based instrument. The raw measured currents from the implanted glucose sensors over 7 h time periods were converted to glucose concentration through use of both a one-point in vivo calibration and a calibration curve obtained in vitro within a bovine serum solution. control sensors, assembled without NO release functionality, exhibit distinctive surface clotting over the 7 h in vivo implantation period.

Review of literature: Role of 5-aminolevulinic acid and sleep

Objective: To determine if current peer-reviewed literature supports the existence of a relationship between the administration of dietary supplements containing 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA) and sleep. Methods: conceptual analysis of a systematically defined group of data is based on publications in referred journals. constant comparative analyses were used to analyze the data. Detailed analyses were used to identify trends that led to qualifying relationships between the use of 5-ALA and heme. In addition, the relationship among heme, melatonin, and sleep were explored. Since there were no published data related to 5-ALA and sleep, an analysis of what is known about 5-ALA and heme was undertaken. Results: currently, within the scope of this review, no literature available directly connecting 5-ALA and sleep was found. Research indicates that 5-ALA has an indirect relationship with intra-cellular energy production, which could result in a wide range of effects fromcellular to endocrine to neurologic to behavioral. In addition, there is evidence that 5-ALA may influence tryptophan and serotonin levels. conclusion: While there are no studies on 5-ALA and sleep were found, current research suggests several potential mechanisms by which 5-ALA could influence sleep. The mechanisms suggest the potential for 5-ALA to assist in the adjustment of a person’s circadian cycle, endocrine function, or neurologic function in order to allow for better sleep in a natural way. In doing so, it may provide for a safer alternative to currently available sleep medication. Further research is needed to explore this possibility.

Obesity is a major risk factor for cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma(hcc)that develops from a background of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).hypercholesterolemia is a common comorbidity of *** cholesterol biosynthesis mainly occurs in the liver,its role in hcc development of obese people remains *** high-fat high-carbohydrate diet-associated orthotopic and spontaneous NAFLD-hcc mouse models,we found that hepatic cholesterol accumulation in obesity selectively suppressed natural killer T(NKT)cell-mediated antitumor *** analysis of human liver revealed aberrant cholesterol metabolism and NKT cell dysfunction in NAFLD ***,cholesterol-lowering rosuvastatin restored NKT expansion and cytotoxicity to prevent obesogenic diet-promoted hcc ***,suppression of hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis by a mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)inhibitor vistusertib preceded tumor regression,which was abolished by NKT inactivation but not cD8^(+)T cell ***,sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2(SREBP2)-driven excessive cholesterol production from hepatocytes induced lipid peroxide accumulation and deficient cytotoxicity in NKT cells,which were supported by findings in people with obesity,NAFLD and *** study highlights mTORc1/SREBP2/cholesterol-mediated NKT dysfunction in the tumor-promoting NAFLD liver microenvironment,providing intervention strategies that invigorating NKT cells to control hcc in the obesity epidemic.
