Emerging Water Quality Issues along Rio de la Sabana, Mexico

The basin of Rio de la Sabana is the largest tributary of the Tres Palos coastal lagoon in Southwest Mexico, east of Acapulco. This lagoon and its upstream basin areas have become a high priority area for the preservation of coastal and marine environments. To obtain information about water quality as affected by urban expansion since 2002, fourteen physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, sulphate, phosphate), biochemical (biological and chemical oxygen demand, methylene blue active substances) and bacteriological parameters (total and fecal coliforms) were determined. This sampling was done for dry and rainy season conditions at seven locations (S1, S2, S3, …, S7) along the river, spaced 3 to 6 km apart to a total of 30.4 km. The results were grouped into four zones: (Z1) reference, (Z2) transition, (Z3) polluted, (Z4) recovery. The Alborada (S5) and Tunzingo (S6) sites, adjacent to dense high-class residential areas (Z3), had the greatest pollution charges in both seasons, while the La Poza (S7) site near the Tres Palos lagoon (Z4) showed a decrease in pollution. All parameters correlated with increasing head- to down-river sampling distance by following linear (pH, DO) or curvilinear patterns (all other parameters). Using sampling location and dry versus rainy sampling season as multivariate regression (predictor) variables led to least-squares capturing: 1) 66% to 95% of the T(°C), pH, DO, and PO3-4 variations, and 2) 57% to 96% of the log-linear variations of the other parameters. Among the parameters, T(°C), DO, and PO3-4 were not significantly affected by sampling season, while pH became so after deleting two higher than usual pH values at the S5 and S6 locations during the dry season.

Methane from enteric fermentation is the gas with the greatest environmental impact emitted by ***(Lv)addition to feedstocks could be a strategy to mitigate rumen methane emissions via decreasing the population of methanogenic archaea(ma).Thus,this paper provides the first overview of the effects of Lv supplementation,focusing on the inhibition of methane production,rumen microbiota,and ruminal *** indicated that Lv treatment had a strong anti-methanogenic effect on pure strains of ***,there are uncertainties from in vitro rumen fermentation trials with complex substrates and rumen ***-state fermentation(SSF)has emerged as a cost-effective option to produce *** this way,SSF of agricultural residues as an Lv-carrier supplement in sheep and goats demonstrated a consistent decrease in ruminal methane *** experimental evidence for in vitro conditions showed that Lv did not affect the volatile fatty acids(VFA).However,in vivo experiments demonstrated that the production of VFA was *** did not negatively affect the digestibility of dry matter during in vitro and in vivo methods,and there is even evidence that it can induce an increase in *** the rumen microbiota,populations of ma were reduced,and no differences were detected in alpha and beta diversity associated with Lv ***,some changes in the relative abundance of the microbiota were *** studies are recommended on:(i)Lv biodegradation products and stability,as well as its adsorption onto the solid matter in the rumen,to gain more insight on the“available”or effective Lv concentration;and(ii)to determine whether the effect of Lv on ruminal fermentation also depends on the feed composition and different ruminants.

Evaluation of the Hydroxynitrile Lyase Activity in Cell Cultures of Capulin (Prunus serotina)

Enzymatic preparations obtained from young plants and cell cultures of capulin were screened for hydroxynitrile lyase activity. The threeweek old plants, grown under sterile conditions, were used to establish a solid cell culture. Crude preparations obtained from this plant material were evaluated for the transformation of benzaldehyde to the corresponding cyanohydrin (mandelonitrile). The results show that the crude material from roots, stalks, and leaves of young plants and calli of roots, stalks, internodes and petioles biocatalyzed the addition of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) to benzaldehyde with a modest to excellent enantioselectivity.

Avocado is one of the most important crops in the world, and Mexico is the largest producer of this fruit. Several insect pests affect its production, and thrips are amongst the most important. A key step in the design of control methods is accurate species identification. Despite this, formal reports on species diversity of thrips in Mexico are very scarce. Morphological identification can sometimes be time-consuming and inconclusive. Therefore, we explored the species diversity of thrips in Mexican avocado orchards （Michoacan state） based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I （COl）. Forty-four specimens were analysed, which represented approximately 8% of all individuals collected from five localities distributed in three Municipalities. All specimens were analysed using the COl marker, and specimens within the genera Frankliniella were also analysed using a marker within the D2 domain of the 28S （28SD2） nuclear ribosomal DNA. Molecular identifications were confirmed using morphological taxonomy. Overall, six genera were found （Neohydatothrips, Scirtothrips, Frankliniella, Arorathrips, Caliothrips and Leptothrips）. AII genera contained only one species, except Frankliniella, for which there were six species. Data from the two molecular markers suggest the existence of cryptic species within Mexican F. occidentalis populations.

Rat adult stem cell differentiation into immature retinal cells

Cell therapy has been proposed as an alternative treatment for retinal diseases. Applications involving stem cells have shown that undifferentiated cells fail to engraft and cannot convert to retinal cells. However, positive results have been reported for retinal precursor cells, suggesting that this approach is the best option. Unfortunately, the source of this cell type is controversial. Predifferentiated adult stem cells may provide an alternative source of cells. The present study proposes a sequential culture media aimed at inducing cells from this source into a preretinal-like lineage. Rat bone marrow stem cells were cultivated in a neuroinduction mix medium for 24 h. The sequence involves immunocytochemistry to detect nestin and tubulin III to demonstrate the cell’s neuronal lineage, followed by incubation in retinal-induction mixed medium for 24 h. RT-PCR was performed to detect expression of Brn3b, Pax6, THY1.1, Opn4, and Ath5 genes. Immunocytochemistry results showed increased expression of nestin and tubulin III after 24 h of incubation in the neuroinduction medium. RT-PCR showed slightly increased expression of Pax6, THY1.1, and Opn4 after 48 h of sequential incubation in the neuroinduction and predifferentiation media. Brn3b and Ath5 gene expression increased markedly. These results suggest that mesenchymal stem cells have a high predisposition to differentiate into preretinal-like cells with minimal time in culture. These cells may provide a viable alternative for restoring damaged retinas.

The Use of a High Frequency Linear Transducer in the Assessment of Fetal Anatomy at the Routine 11 to 13 + 6-Week Scan among Chinese Population

Objectives: To determine if the use of high frequency linear transducer (HFLT) in addition to conventional curvilinear transducer (CCT) aids assessment of fetal cardiac and non-cardiac anatomy in the first trimester. Methods: Transabdominal CCT (4 - 8 MHz) followed by HFLT (9 MHz) was used to study prospectively the visualization rate of basic and optional anatomical structures according to international guidelines. McNemar and Chi-square test were used to compare correlated and independent proportions respectively. Postnatal outcomes were traced. Results: Comparing with CCT alone, additional use of HFLT did not improve the completion rate of basic anomaly screen (95.0% vs. 97.0%, p = 0.5) in the 101 women studied, but it improved the visualization rate of some optional structures including lens (57.4% vs. 73.3%), three-vessel view (3 VV) (17.8% vs. 48.5%), left ventricular outflow tract (17.8% vs. 51.5%), kidneys (8.9% vs. 47.5%), and umbilical artery (86.1% vs. 93.1%) (all p maly screen, nor does it achieve a high visualisation rate of different cardiac views in the first trimester.

The chemical and electrochemical stability of lanthanide nickelates La2 NiO4+δ(LNO),Pr2 NiO4+δ(PNO)and their mixed compounds La(2-x)PrxNiO4+δ(LPNOs)with x=0.5,1 or 1.5 is *** aim is to promote these materials as efficient electrodes for solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC)and/or solid oxide electrolysis cell(SOEC).La2 NiO4+δand La1.5Pr0.5NiO4+δcompounds are chemically very stable as powders over one month in the temperature range 600-800℃,while the other materials rich in praseodymium progressively decompose into various perovskite-deriving components with additional Pr6 *** their uneven properties,all these materials are quite efficient and sustainable as electrodes on top of gadolinium doped ceria(GDCBL)//yttrium doped zirconia(8 YSZ)electrolyte,for one month at 700℃without *** polarization(300 ma·cm-2),the electrochemical performances of LNO,PNO and La1.5Pr0.5NiO4+δ(LP5 NO)quickly degrade in SOFC mode,*** the oxygen reduction reaction,while they show durability in SOEC mode,*** the oxide oxidation reaction.
