The main therapeutic options for colorectal cancer are surgical resection and adjuvant chemotherapy in non-metastatic disease.However,the evaluation of the overall adjuvant chemotherapy benefit in patients with a high risk of recurrence is challenging.Radiological images can represent a source of data that can be analyzed by using automated computer-based techniques,working on numerical information coded within Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine files:This image numerical analysis has been named“radiomics”.Radiomics allows the extraction of quantitative features from radiological images,mainly invisible to the naked eye,that can be further analyzed by artificial intelligence algorithms.Radiomics is expanding in oncology to either understand tumor biology or for the development of imaging biomarkers for diagnosis,staging,and prognosis,prediction of treatment response and diseases monitoring and surveillance.Several efforts have been made to develop radiomics signatures for colorectal cancer patient using computed tomography(CT)images with different aims:The preoperative prediction of lymph node metastasis,detecting BRAF and RAS gene mutations.Moreover,the use of delta-radiomics allows the analysis of variations of the radiomics parameters extracted from CT scans performed at different timepoints.Most published studies concerning radiomics and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)mainly focused on the response of advanced tumors that under-went neoadjuvant therapy.Nodes status is the main determinant of adjuvant chemotherapy.Therefore,several radiomics model based on MRI,especially on T2-weighted images and ADC maps,for the preoperative prediction of nodes metastasis in rectal cancer has been developed.Current studies mostly focused on the applications of radiomics in positron emission tomogra-phy/CT for the prediction of survival after curative surgical resection and assessment of response following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.Since colorectal liver metastases develop in about 25%of patients with colorecta

The road to sustainable use and waste management of plastics in Portugal

As a European Union(EU)member,Portugal must comply with reductions in plastic waste.In Portugal,the 330 items/100 m of beach litter,comprising up to 3.9 million pieces and of which 88%is plastic,is higher than the EU median(149 items/100 m)and must be reduced to 20 items/100 m(94%).Integrative measures are needed to reduce littering and improve plastics’use and disposal under the circular economy.Of this 414 kt of plastic packaging waste,163 kt were declared plastic packaging,140 kt subjected to recycling,and 94 kt to energy recovery.The current recycling rate of plastic packaging(34%)should be improved to reach EU recycling averages(42%)and goals and to provide widespread benefits,considering revenues of 167€/t.As a net importer of waste,Portugal could benefit from the valorization of imported waste.Besides increased recycling,pyrolysis and gasification could provide short-term alternatives for producing value-added substances from plastic waste,such as hydrogen,consistent with the National Plan of Hydrogen and improving ongoing regulations on single-use plastics.This manuscript provides an integrative view of plastics in Portugal,from use to disposal,providing specific recommendations under the circular economy.

Regeneration in the central nervous system （CNS） is limited, and CNS damage often leads to cognitive impairment or permanent functional motor and sensory loss. Impaired regenerative capacity is multifactorial and includes inflammation, loss of the blood-brain barrier, and alteration in the extracellular matrix （ECM）. One of the main problems is the formation of a glial scar and the production of inhibitory ECM, such as proteoglycans, that generates a physical and mechanical barrier, impeding axonal regrowth （Figure 1A）.

Comparison and predicted equation of energy expenditure during walking or running among Caucasians,African Americans and Asians

Knowledge of measured energy expenditure(EE)during walking and running is important for exercise pre-scription.Further,research on the EE comparison and EE predicted equation during walking or running among different ethnicities is limited.The purpose of the current study was to compare EE to walk or run 1 mile in Caucasian,African American and Asian adults and to develop a regression equation to predict EE to walk or run 1 mile.Two hundred and twenty-four participants were included(71 Caucasians,68 African Americans and 85 Asians)with 3 groups(normal weight walking,overweight walking and running).EE was measured via indirect calorimetry.Analysis of variance was used to compare EE across groups.Multiple regression analysis was employed for EE prediction,and the prediction equation was cross-validated.A significant EE difference was found between walking and running among three ethnicities.The prediction equation was:EE=0.978 Body Weight-4.571 Gender(male=1;female=2)+3.524 Ethnicities(Caucasians=1,African Americans=2,Asians=3)+32.447(standard error of estimate=12.5 kcal·mile^(-1)).The equation was valid through cross-validation,so it is recommended to apply for calculating EE during walking or running 1 mile among Cauca-sians,African Americans and Asians.

C-reactive protein and telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT)associate with chronic disease markers in a sample from low-income neighborhoods in Detroit,Michigan

Racial and ethnic minorities in economically deprived inner cities experience high rates of chronic diseases compared to neighborhoods with higher socioeconomic status(SES).However,these economically deprived populations are understudied in terms of biomarkers associated with chronic disease risk which include C-reactive protein(CRP),telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT),and glycosylated hemoglobin(A1C).We examined relationships between CRP and TERT and chronic disease indicators(body mass index[BMI]and A1C)in two lowincome,predominantly African American(AA)neighborhoods in Detroit,Michigan.Sixty-nine adults(43 females,26 males,mean age 46 years[y],standard deviation[SD]=15.9)completed a health survey,anthropometry,and finger stick blood tests.A1C was measured using A1CNow test strips,and CRP and TERT levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)with samples extracted from dried blood spots.We examined CRP(mean=4.9,SD=3.1),TERT(mean=32.5,SD=15.1),and A1C(mean=5.4,SD=1.0)by BMI category.We fitted restricted maximum likelihood regression models to evaluate associations between CRP,TERT,BMI,and A1C,after adjustment for demographics and inclusion of a random effect for the neighborhood.In this predominantly AA sample(91%,63/69),68%had levels of CRP(means=4.8 mg/L,SD=3.0 for AAs;6.4 mg/L,SD=3.9 for all others)indicative of chronic inflammation(CRP greater than 3 mg/L).BMI was significantly associated with CRP(p=0.004)and TERT(p=0.026).TERT levels indicate that being overweight is associated with markers of chromosome remodeling,suggestive of chronic disease.CRP followed a similar trend with overweight individuals having higher inflammation and risk of chronic disease.Our findings warrant further exploration of additional factors that may influence CRP and TERT.Furthermore,examining populations in a more ethnically and/or economically diverse,yet still high proportion minority,sample will fill a knowledge gap in this understudied field.

Methane from enteric fermentation is the gas with the greatest environmental impact emitted by ruminants.Lovastatin(Lv)addition to feedstocks could be a strategy to mitigate rumen methane emissions via decreasing the population of methanogenic archaea(MA).Thus,this paper provides the first overview of the effects of Lv supplementation,focusing on the inhibition of methane production,rumen microbiota,and ruminal fermentation.Results indicated that Lv treatment had a strong anti-methanogenic effect on pure strains of MA.However,there are uncertainties from in vitro rumen fermentation trials with complex substrates and rumen inoculum.Solid-state fermentation(SSF)has emerged as a cost-effective option to produce Lv.In this way,SSF of agricultural residues as an Lv-carrier supplement in sheep and goats demonstrated a consistent decrease in ruminal methane emissions.The experimental evidence for in vitro conditions showed that Lv did not affect the volatile fatty acids(VFA).However,in vivo experiments demonstrated that the production of VFA was decreased.Lv did not negatively affect the digestibility of dry matter during in vitro and in vivo methods,and there is even evidence that it can induce an increase in digestibility.Regarding the rumen microbiota,populations of MA were reduced,and no differences were detected in alpha and beta diversity associated with Lv treatment.However,some changes in the relative abundance of the microbiota were induced.Further studies are recommended on:(i)Lv biodegradation products and stability,as well as its adsorption onto the solid matter in the rumen,to gain more insight on the“available”or effective Lv concentration;and(ii)to determine whether the effect of Lv on ruminal fermentation also depends on the feed composition and different ruminants.

Repeatability of decision-making behaviour in male threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus： Effects of dummy vs. live stimuli

Individuals select from a number of behaviours when responding to various situations and the decisions they make may affect their fitness. The costs and benefits of these responses vary among individuals causing them to differ even in identical situations. One example of this type of situation is when territorial males encounter both a male and female simultaneously, generating a trade-off that likely leads to individual differences due to differing costs of various actions among males. This situation commonly occurs in threespine stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus. However, for selection to act effectively, individuals must behave in a consistent manner and measuring repeatability can aid in understanding how selection may shape such trade-offs. Males of this species exhibit consistent individual differences in their response to dummy males and females but it is unknown if patterns are similar when feedback from the stimuli is present. To assess this, male threespine stickleback were tested with dummy and live male and female conspecifics, presented separately and simultaneously. While the same trends were found regardless of stimulus type, males were more aggressive towards the live conspecifics than to the dummies. Repeatability values were similar within a treatment regardless of whether live or dummy conspecifics were used, suggesting that individuals show the same level of consistency. This study adds to our understanding of consistent individual differences by demonstrating that feedback may not affect responses to conflicting stimuli and that male threespine stickleback respond in a consistent manner to both dummy and live stimuli.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Acute Leukemia in Kenya: The Gaps and Opportunities

Acute leukemia (AL) is a malignant disease of the bone marrow in which hematopoietic precursors are arrested in an early stage of development. The diagnosis of leukemia and lymphomas, beyond morphology, is limited in low-resource countries including Kenya. Morphological diagnosis includes Cytological and Histological assessment of blood, bone marrow aspirates and tissues on suspected Acute leukemia patients. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2016) international guidelines on Acute leukemia diagnosis recommend that cytogenetic analysis, appropriate molecular genetics, Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) testing, and flow cytometric immuno-phenotyping should be done in addition to a morphologic assessment of Acute Leukemia. In facilities where resources are relatively available, immunophenotypic and genetic features have resulted not only in providing a more accurate leukemia diagnosis but also in identifying antigens or genes that can then be targeted for therapy. This article will look at the gaps in the diagnosis of Acute leukemia in low-resource settings like Kenya and opportunities available to improve diagnosis.
