Modelling fuel loads of understorey vegetation and forest floor components in pine stands in NW Spain

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(P.pinaster;P.radiata and P.sylvestris):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor fuels.Additive systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as regressors.The systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological differences.In general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel fractions.The best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability explained.To reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential regressors.Only relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor relationships.Nevertheless,these models explained around 52%of the observed variability.Finally,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were fitted.These models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowing for landscape-scale estimates of total fuel lo

Primary Sjogren's syndrome(psS)is one of the most widespread autoimmune diseases with unknown origin,characterized by a lymphocytic infiltrate of the exocrine glands and the production of anti-SSA/Ro and anti-SSB/La antibodies that cause dysfunction and destruction mainly of salivary and lachrymal glands,leading to dry eyes and dry mouth.In the absence of a standardized evidence-based screening tool to decide which patients with dry eye must be referred for study of this pathology.

Removal of saxitoxin and anatoxin-a by PAC in the presence and absence of microcystin-LR and/or cyanobacterial cells

Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR(MC),saxitoxin(STX),and anatoxin-a(ANTX-a)which are harmful to humans and other animals.Individual removal efficiencies of STX and ANTX-a by powdered activated carbon(PAC)was investigated,aswell as when MC-LR and cyanobacteriawere present.Experimentswere conductedwith distilled water and then source water,using the PAC dosages,rapid mix/flocculation mixing intensities and contact times of two drinking water treatment plants in northeast Ohio.At pH 8 and 9,STX removal was 47%-81%in distilled water and 46%-79%in source water,whereas it was 0-28%for pH 6 in distilled water and 31%-52%in source water.When 1.6μg/L or 20μg/L MC-LR was present with STX,STX removal was increased with PAC simultaneously removing 45%-65%of the 1.6μg/L MC-LR and 25%-95%of the 20μg/L MC-LR depending on the pH.ANTX-a removal at pH 6 was 29%-37%for distilled water and 80%for source water,whereas it was 10%-26%for pH 8 in distilled water and 28%for pH 9 in source water.The presence of cyanobacteria cells decreased ANTX-a removal by at least 18%.When 20μg/L MC-LR was present with ANTX-a in source water,59%-73%ANTX-a and 48%-77%of MCLR was removed at pH 9 depending on the PAC dose.In general,a higher PAC dose led to higher cyanotoxin removals.This study also documented that multiple cyanotoxins can be effectively removed by PAC for water at pH’s between 6 and 9.

Glaucoma is currently the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.Due to aging societies the number of patients suffering from this disease will further increase in the next years.Unfortunately,glaucoma can remain asymptomatic until it is rather far progressed,hence about 10–50% of patients are unaware they suffer from this disease.Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy associated with changes at the optic nerve head.

The plasticity of plasticity:lesson from remote microglia induced by focal central nervous system injury

The last decades have represented an important season in the re-conceptualization of brain plasticity,especially in extending the concept at events occurring beyond the developmental stage and in demonstrating the profound impact of these changes on so-called spontaneous recovery after central nervous system(CNS)injuries.The study of the cellular,molecular,functional and structural mechanisms involved in brain plasticity has clearly emphasized the multitude of players engaged in this phenomenon,leading to the conceptualization that non-neuronal cells and non-neuronal mechanisms intervene in these changes and orchestrate some of the responses observed(Werner and Stevens,2015).Among the different non-neuronal cells and non-neuronal substrates of injury-induced plasticity is becoming increasingly recognized that microglia drive a series of intrinsic CNS responses after damage(Sandvig et al.,2018;Bisicchia et al.,2019).

Neural functions of small heat shock proteins

Stress response is a cellular widespread mechanism encoded by a common protein program composed by multiple cellular factors that converge in a defense reaction to protect the cell against damage.Among many mechanisms described,heat shock proteins were proposed as universally conserved protective factors in the stress core proteome,coping with different stress stimuli through its canonical role in protein homeostasis.However,emerging evidences reveal non-canonical roles of heat shock proteins relevant for physiological and pathological conditions.Here,we review the implications of inducible heat shock proteins in the central nervous system physiology.In particular,we discuss the relevance of heat shock proteins in the maintenance of synapses,as a balanced protective mechanism in central nervous system development,pathological conditions and aging.

On the effect of pitch and yaw angles in oblique impacts of smallcaliber projectiles

A terminal ballistic analysis of the effects of 7.62 mm × 51 AP P80 rounds on inclined high-strength armor steel plates is the focus of the presented study.The findings of an instrumented ballistic testing combined with 3D advanced numerical simulations performed using the IMPETUS Afea? software yielded the conclusions.The experimental verification proved that slight differences in the pitch-andyaw angles of a projectile upon an impact caused different damage types to the projectile’s core.The residual velocities predicted numerically were close to the experimental values and the calculated core deviations were in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results.An extended matrix of the core deviation angles with combinations of pitch-and-yaw upon impact angles was subsequently built on the basis of the numerical study.The presented experimental and numerical investigation examined thoroughly the influence of the initial pitch and yaw angles on the after-perforation projectile’s performance.

Childhood maltreatment(CM)has been consistently linked with numerous detrimental outcomes concerning physical and psychological health.However,few studies have explored vulnerability to neurological disorders after CM.Early life adversity,in the form of poverty,stress and abuse,has been associated with decline in cognitive function and dementia later in life(Short and Baram,2019).Robust preclinical data suggest that early life stress(ELS)may increase the risk and worsen the course of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s(AD)and Parkinson’s(PD)diseases,and traumatic brain injury(TBI)(Lesuis et al.,2018;Short and Baram,2019;He et al.,2020;Catale et al.,2021;Sanchez et al.,2021).

We say that T is left(resp. right) Browder if it is left(resp. right)Fredholm and has a finite ascent(resp. descent). In this paper, we analyze the stability of the left(resp. right) Fredholm and the left(resp. right) Browder linear relations under commuting Riesz operator perturbations. Recent results of Zivkovic et al. to the case of bounded operators are covered.

Since their first description in the brains of patients suffering from Alzheimer ’s disease(AD), more than 100 years ago, extracellular amyloid-β(Aβ) plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles have been the principal focus of AD research. However, this focus has led to the failure of several long and promising clinical trials, and the efficacy of new Aβ-targeting drugs to slow down the disease progression is still controversial despite being successful in reducing the Aβ load.
