Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Shorea kunstleri

Objective:To evaluate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of stembark of Shorea kunstleri(***)together with analysis of phytochemical and total phenolic ***:Extraction was conducted with different solvent polarity of n-hexane,dichloromethane(DCM)and methanol by using Soxhlet *** phenolic content was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu *** radical scavenging activity and inhibition of lipid peroxidation were evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging and ferric thiocyanate assays,*** activities were performed using disc diffusion method,minimum inhibition concentration(MIC),minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC),and minimum fungicidal ***:*** stembark extracts revealed presence of steroids,terpenoids,saponins,flavonoids,and phenolic *** extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content and free radical scavenging activity resulting in phenolic content of(8.340±0.003)g GAE/100 g of extract and(95.90±1.07)%DPPH inhibition(IC_(50)value of 18.6μg/mL),*** thiocyanate assay of n-hexane,DCM,and methanol extracts indicated lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of(74.20±0.35)%,(74.00±0.10)%,and(72.80±0.27)%,*** antimicrobial and antifungal tests,methanol extract showed inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus(***),Candida albicans,and Candida tropicalis with inhibition zones of 10-12,18-22,and 18-19 mm,*** MIC test of methanol extract showed highest inhibition against Candida albicans and ***(0.04 and 0.08 mg/mL,respectively)while DCM extract exhibited the highest activity towards Candida tropicalis(MIC value of 0.63 mg/mL).Taken together,MBC test of methanol extract strongly demonstrated bactericidal effect against *** with MBC value of 0.08 mg/***:The study demonstrated that stembark extracts of *** possessed antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Feasibility of Integrating Bimetallic Au-Ag Non-Alloys Nanoparticles Embedded in Reduced Graphene Oxide Photodetector

To coordinate the resonant wavelength of the plasmonic nanoparticles(NPs),the emission band of the reduced graphene oxide(rGO)photodetector at the NIR-region is crucial for the optimal plasmon-enhanced luminescence in the *** contrast to monometallic NPs,where limits the dimensions and extended resonant wavelength,we integrated an Au-Ag bimetallic NPs(BMNPs)to enable resonance tuning at the longer wavelength at the excitation source of 785 *** features showed an increase in radiative recombination rates as well as the quantum yield efficiency of the *** BMNPs were produced from the dewetting process of 600℃and 500℃,both at 1 min after the deposition thickness layer of Au(8 nm)and Ag(10 nm)on the Si substrate using the electron-beam evaporation *** BMNPs-rGO photodetector exhibited the responsivity of 2.25 A·W^(–1),Jones of specific detectivity of 2.45×10^(11)Jones,and external quantum efficiency(EQE)of 356%.The rise time and fall time for the photodetector were 32 ns and 186 ns,*** work provided an essential information to enable the versatile plasmon-enhanced application in 2-dimensional(2D)material optoelectronic devices.

Constructed Wetlands as a Natural Resource for Water Quality Improvement in Malaysia

Tropical wetlands have numerous natural functions, one of which is the filtration of wastewater for water quality improvement. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of constructed wetlands in Universiti Sains Malaysia for water quality treatment of stormwater runoff. A total of 17 sampling stations were selected from different sections of possessing different compositions, characteristics and plant species. Weekly physico-chemical and biological parameters were analysed during the one year period starting from December 2010 to December 2011. The results exhibited significant improvement of water quality as the concentration of nitrate, nitrite, ammoniacal-nitrogen, orthophosphate, TSS, BOD and COD decreased after the water passed through the macrophyte and micropool zones before being discharged to the wetland outlet. The concentration of nitrite was significantly reduced (80%);nitrate (61.56%), ammoniacal-nitrogen (51.49%), orthophosphate (60.98%), TSS (67.86%), BOD (27.7%) and COD (46.43%). The decrease in the concentrations of the above pollutants showed that the improvement of water quality was performed in the wetland. Most of the concentrations fall in Class IIA and IIB based on National Water Quality Standards for Malaysia and Department of Environment (DOE) Water Quality Index Classification. Biological measurement showed high diversity of species. Based on the results obtained, the macrophyte zone showed a high number of species and percentage distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton, starting from the Wetland 1and 2 until the outlet wetland (14.6% - 14.9% until 3.5%). While for fish distribution, Oreochromis niloticus was the dominant fish species from the others seven species found in the constructed wetland. Overall, the results from this study demonstrate that constructed wetlands significantly improve water quality of stormwater runoff, and that they are a good natural resource for the sustenance and maintenance of biodiversity.
