Nanotoxicology, a branch of bionanoscience focuses on the study of the hazardous interactions between nanomaterials and the ecosystem and ascertaining its consequent implications. Nanomaterial-cell interactions are dependent on numerous factors such as size, shape, type and surface coatings/charge of nanomaterials. These factors in association with cell membrane factors such as charge and formation of the protein corona influence the uptake and internalization of these particles leading to their potential toxicity. Understanding the different routes of exposure, their transport, behaviour and eventual fate is also of importance. Toxicities that occur to the living systems are consequences of various causes/dysfunctions such as ROS production, loss of membrane integrity, releases of toxic metal ions that bind with specific cell receptors and undergo certain conformations that inhibit normal cell function resulting in cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and possible cell necrosis. This paper attempts to review the available research pertaining to nanomaterial-cell interactions and their potential toxicity.

Eco-Friendly Synthesis of Silver Nano Particles Using <i>Carica papaya</i>Leaf Extract

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using eco-friendly method with extract of Carica papaya as reducing and stabilizing agent. The silver precursor used was silver nitrate solution. A visible colour change from colourless to reddish brown confirmed the formation of the nanoparticles and the UV-Vis spectroscopy showed surface plasmon resonance of 435 nm for the silver nanoparticle. The mean particle size was 250 nm while the polydispersity index was 0.22. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was studied against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The silver nanoparticles biosynthesized showed satisfactory antimicrobial activity against the test isolates. Antimicrobial property of the nanoparticles was similar (P > 0.05). Generally, MIC values of the samples against the microorganisms tested ranged from 25 - 100 mg/ml. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most sensitive while Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis were least sensitive to the silver nanoparticles.

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using eco-friendly method with the extract of Carica papaya as a reducing and stabilizing agent. Metronidazole 200 mg was loaded as a model drug to the silver nanoparticles. The percentage yield of the metronidazole nanoparticle was high (96.00%). The entrapment efficiency 85.60% while the loading capacity was 8.90%. Differential scanning calorimetry showed there was no interaction between the reducing agent and model drug. Characterization of the metronidazole malpractices using UV- vis spectroscopy, zeta sizer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed. The UV-Vis spectroscopy showed surface plasmon resonance of 435nm for the silver nanoparticle. The mean particle size was 250 nm while the polydispersity index was 0.22. The metronidazole nanoparticle showed an extended and controlled release profile. The kinetics of release was zero-order (R2 = 0.9931) for the metronidazole nanoparticle while the metronidazole normal release tablet followed Higuchi kinetics (R2 = 0.9745).

We study the effect of particle size polydispersity(δ) on the melting transition(T*), local ordering, solid–liquid coexistence phase and dynamics of two-dimensional Lennard–Jones fluids up to moderate polydispersity by means of computer simulations. The particle sizes are drawn at random from the Gaussian(G) and uniform(U) distribution *** these systems, we further consider two different kinds of particles, viz., particles having the same mass irrespective of size, and in the other case the mass of the particle scales with its size. It is observed that with increasing polydispersity,the value of T*initially increases due to improved packing efficiency(φ) followed by a decrease and terminates at δ ≈8%(U-system) and 14%(G-system) with no significant difference for both mass types. The interesting observation is that the particular value at which φ drops suddenly coincides with the peak of the heat capacity(CP) curve, indicating a transition. The quantification of local particle ordering through the hexatic order parameter(Q_6), Voronoi construction and pair correlation function reveals that the ordering decreases with increasing δ and T. Furthermore, the solid–liquid coexistence region for the G-system is shown to be comparatively wider in the T –δ plane phase diagram than that for the U system. Finally, the study of dynamics reveals that polydisperse systems relax faster compared to monodisperse systems;however, no significant qualitative differences, depending on the distribution type and mass polydispersity, are observed.

Leakage currents accelerate surface degradation of metal contacts via small scale arcing across lubricating films,but recent observations suggest that metallic nanoparticle additives in lubricants may be useful to improve contact *** findings prompted a study that examined electrically induced surface pitting of steel contacts in the presence of several lubricating greases including some containing nanometer-sized colloidal silver(Ag)*** rolling sphere-on-disk experiments were conducted under electro-tribological loads employing polyurea greases derived from mineral and synthetic base oils with and without *** forces and electrical resistance were monitored continuously during the tests;surface changes were characterized by means of optical spectroscopy,stylus profilometry,and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)including compositional analysis using energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS).The observations demonstrate that surface pitting induced by arcing occurs mainly at the points were the rolling motion changes direction and that eroded metal is deposited along the wear ***-sized pits are formed which contain carbon and oxygen indicating that arcing causes decomposition of the hydrocarbon *** findings indicate a significant inhibition of pitting is induced by the Ag nanoparticles;some greases containing other additives exhibit a similar,although less pronounced,effect.

The discovery that contracting skeletal muscle generates reactive oxygen species(ROS)was first reported over 40 years *** prevailing view in the 1980s was that exercise-induced ROS production promotes oxidation of proteins and lipids resulting in muscle ***,a paradigm shift occurred in the 1990s as growing research revealed that ROS are signaling molecules,capable of activating transcriptional activators/coactivators and promoting exercise-induced muscle *** evidence supports the notion that reduction-oxidation(redox)signaling pathways play an important role in the muscle remodeling that occurs in response to endurance exercise *** review examines the specific role that redox signaling plays in this endurance exercise-induced skeletal muscle *** begin with a discussion of the primary sites of ROS production in contracting muscle fibers followed by a summary of the antioxidant enzymes involved in the regulation of ROS levels in the *** then discuss which redox-sensitive signaling pathways promote endurance exercise-induced muscle adaptation and debate the strength of the evidence supporting the notion that redox signaling plays an essential role in muscle adaptation to endurance exercise *** hopes of stimulating future research,we highlight several important unanswered questions in this field.
