Nigeria is an Afrotropical region with considerable ecological heterogeneity and levels of biotic *** its vertebrate fauna,reptiles have broad distributions,thus,they constitute a compelling system for assessing the impact of ecological variation and geographic isolation on species *** red-headed rock agama,Agama agama,lives in a wide range of habitats and,thus,it may show genetic structuring and ***,we tested the hypothesis that ecology affects its genetic structure and population *** inference phylogenetic analysis of a mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)gene recovered four well-supported matrilines with strong evidence of genetic structuring consistent with eco-geographic *** differences among populations based on the mtDNA also correlated with geographic distance. The ecologicalniche model for the matrilines had a good fit and robust performance. Population divergence alongthe environmental axes was associated with climatic conditions, and temperature ranked highestamong all environmental variables for forest specialists, while precipitation ranked highest for theforest/derived savanna, and savanna specialists. Our results cannot reject the hypothesis that nicheconservatism promotes geographic isolation of the western populations of Nigerian A. ***, ecological gradients and geographic isolation impact the genetic structure and population divergenceof the lizards. This species might be facing threats due to recent habitat fragmentation,especially in western Nigeria. Conservation actions appear necessary.

Determinants of adoption of multiple sustainable agricultural practices among smallholder farmers in Nigeria

Despite the important roles of Sustainable Agricultural Practices(SAPs)in improving productivity,welfare,and food security of farming households,the adoption rates of SAPs have been perceived to be generally low,especially in developing *** cross-sectional data collected from the 2015 Nigeria General Household Survey,this study examines the factors influencing the adoption of multiple SAPs,while also considering the drivers of the intensity of adoption of these *** methods of data analysis are based on the Multivariate probit and the Ordered probit *** SAPs considered include improved seeds,inorganic fertilizer,mixed-cropping techniques,and organic *** empirical results show that farmers’adoption of different SAPs and their intensity of use depend significantly on factors such as the age of household head,gender,education,household size,access to extension services,and household wealth *** findings imply that policymakers and agricultural development agencies should seek to maintain or increase household asset bases,and encourage both formal and informal training programme among farming households to facilitate the adoption of SAPs.

Risk of predation: a critical force driving habitat quality perception and foraging behavior of granivorous birds in a Nigerian forest reserve

Background:Understanding the factors that influence the foraging behavior and perception of habitat quality by animals has long been the focus in ecology. Due to the direct effect resource acquisition has on an individual's fitness and species' survival, predation risk is considered widely to be a major driver of foraging decision. The objectives of this study were to investigate how predation risk is perceived by granivorous bird species with respect to different habitat and microhabitat types, time of day and food types in Amurum Forest Reserve, Nigeria, with a view to direct future conservation planning. Methods: For 3 months, we conducted field experiments to measure giving-up densities (GUD, the amount of food left behind in artificial patches after birds cease to forage in it) and how it differs with habitat types, microhabitats, times of day, and food types. General linear mixed-effect models (GLMMs) were fitted to investigate the differences in GUD with respect to the aforementioned variables. Model selection was done based on the Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). Results: There was no significant difference in GUDs across habitats. However, there was a significant difference in GUDs between microhabitats. Higher food remnants were recorded in the open than in cover microhabitats, as birds exploited food patches in the cover more. Time of day influenced foraging behavior in the birds. They foraged more in the morning than afternoon across all three habitats except for the gallery forest where birds foraged less in the morning. Higher GUDs were recorded in open than cover microhabitats both in the morning and the afternoon. Birds had a preference for rice, millet, and groundnut respectively. Conclusion:The differences in GUDs were very indicative of differences in foraging behavior and perception of resource availability in response to perceived predation risk. Diabetes mellitus and male infertility

Infertility is prevalent in about 10%-25% of couples in their reproductive age, analogous to 60-80 million infertile couples globally. Of these infertility cases, 10%-30% are exclusively attributed to a problem of the male. Several diseases have been implicated as contributors to deteriorating male fertility and diabetes mellitus (DM) is included. DM, a chronic non-communicable disease, has been considered as one of the most appreciable health threats, as it affects 9% (422 million) of the world's population as of 2014. It is characterised by hyperglycaemia, which can result from the inability of the pancreaticβ-cells to secrete insulin or from the target tissue becoming insensitive to insulin. DM has been reported to influence male reproductive function through diverse pathways and mechanisms. The adverse effects of reactive oxygen species and successive development of oxidative stress that occur due to DM have been investigated and implicated by several studies. The products of non-enzymatic glycosylation are reported to be widely distributed in the reproductive tract of diabetic men. Additionally, DM has been implicated to impair the processes of male sexual acts. Data reported in this review were extracted from PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Scopus with diabetes and male infertility as the key search words. In light of the aforementioned, the aim of this review is to provide brief background information on DM as well highlight and explain the likely mechanisms of male fertility which DM impacts.

NeCAB family of neuronal calcium-binding proteins in health and disease

The N-terminal eF-hand calcium-binding proteins 1–3(NeCAB1–3) constitute a family of predominantly neuronal proteins characterized by the presence of at least one eF-hand calcium-binding domain and a functionally less well characterized C-terminal antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain. All three family members were initially discovered due to their interactions with other proteins. NeCAB1 associates with synaptotagmin-1, a critical neuronal protein involved in membrane trafficking and synaptic vesicle exocytosis. NeCAB2 interacts with predominantly striatal G-protein-coupled receptors, while NeCAB3 partners with amyloid-β A4 precursor protein-binding family A members 2 and 3, key regulators of amyloid-β production. This demonstrates the capacity of the family for interactions with various classes of proteins. NeCAB proteins exhibit distinct subcellular localizations: NeCAB1 is found in the nucleus and cytosol, NeCAB2 resides in endosomes and the plasma membrane, and NeCAB3 is present in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. The antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain, an evolutionarily ancient component, is akin to atypical heme oxygenases in prokaryotes but is not wellcharacterized in vertebrates. Prokaryotic antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domains typically form dimers, suggesting that calcium-mediated conformational changes in NeCAB proteins may induce antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain dimerization, potentially activating some enzymatic properties. However, the substrate for this enzymatic activity remains uncertain. Alternatively, calcium-mediated conformational changes might influence protein interactions or the subcellular localization of NeCAB proteins by controlling the availability of protein–protein interaction domains situated between the eF hands and the antibiotic biosynthesis monooxygenase domain. Present of wind power is sporadically and cannot be utilized as the only fundamental load of energy *** paper proposes a wind-solar hybrid energy storage system(HeSS)to ensure a stable supply grid for a longer period.A multi-objective genetic algorithm(MOGA)and state of charge(SOC)region division for the batteries are introduced to solve the objective function and configuration of the system capacity,***/Simulink was used for simulation *** optimization results show that for a 0.5 MW wind power and 0.5 MW photovoltaic system,with a combination of a 300 Ah lithium battery,a 200 Ah lead-acid battery,and a water storage tank,the proposed strategy reduces the system construction cost by approximately 18,000 ***,the cycle count of the electrochemical energy storage systemincreases from4515 to 4660,while the depth of discharge decreases from 55.37%to 53.65%,achieving shallow charging and discharging,thereby extending battery life and reducing grid voltage fluctuations *** proposed strategy is a guide for stabilizing the grid connection of wind and solar power generation,capability allocation,and energy management of energy conservation systems.

empirical Analysis of Interactions of Agricultural Sector and HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Africa

This study examines long run economic cost of HIV/AIDS on agriculture. Twenty-two African Countries were identified through purposive sampling. The sampling procedure helped to identify 1420 affected households. However, 1300 observations were found suitable for the subsequent analysis. Data were subjected to descriptive statistics and Overlapping Generation (OLG) model. The causes of high prevalence rates are the issue of poverty, fertility, myth and migration among others. Factors responsible for the classification of high HIV/AIDS prevalence rates were the patterns of spread of infectious disease that are closely associated with patterns of human mobility. For lower HIV/AIDS prevalence rate factors were low values of procreation and high values placed on morals. A positive correlation between HIV prevalence and GDP per capita was found. The study found out that there is a curvilinear relationship between the course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and agricultural/economic growth in terms of human capita development.

Objective:To evaluate the testis and the cauda epididymis after treating both healthy and diabetic rats with rooibos(Aspalathus linearis),honeybush(Cyclopia intermedia),and sutherlandia(Lessertia frutescens),***:Ninety male Wistar rats were randomly divided into nine groups(n=10 per group).Fifty rats were randomized to receive tap water,0.1 M citrate buffer,2.0%fermented rooibos,4.0%fermented honeybush,or 0.2%unfermented *** was induced via a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin(STZ)at 45 mg/kg in 40 *** diabetic rats were randomized to receive tap water,2.0%fermented rooibos,4.0%fermented honeybush,or 0.2%unfermented *** were sacrificed after seven weeks of diabetic *** was collected for hormonal assay,while the testes and caudal epididymis were retrieved for histomorphological ***:Diabetic rats treated with 2.0%fermented rooibos exhibited a significant increase in fasting plasma glucose(FPG)versus the vehicle group(P=0.002),and a 3.6%decrease compared to the diabetic control group(P>0.05).Diabetic rats treated with honeybush or sutherlandia showed 23.6%and 15.4%decrease in FPG when compared to the diabetic control group,respectively(both P>0.05).The diabetic control rats had a significant decrease in the percentage of histologically normal seminiferous tubules compared to the control group(P=0.049).There was 21.0%,14.0%,and 5.4%rise in the percentage of normal seminiferous tubules in diabetic rats receiving rooibos,honeybush or sutherlandia,respectively,compared to the diabetic control *** infusion control groups(rooibos,honeybush and sutherlandia)showed normal seminiferous tubules,presence of spermatozoa in the epididymal lumen,and had normal overall *** testicular and epididymal morphology were altered in the diabetic control group,but these disruptions were mildly ameliorated by rooibos,honeybush,and ***:The detrimental effect

Potential for sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors in the management of metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and metaanalysis

BACKGROUND Landmark trials have established the benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors(SGLT2-Is)in cardiovascular disease including heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction and renal diseases regardless of the presence of diabetes ***,studies evaluating the role of SGLT2-Is in metabolic syndrome(MetS)are *** This study primarily aimed to evaluate the impact of SGLT2-Is on the components of *** Two independent reviewers and an experienced librarian searched Medline,Scopus and the Cochrane central from inception to December 9,2021 to identify placebo controlled randomized controlled trials that evaluated the impact of SGLT2-Is on the components of MetS as an ***-and post-treatment data of each component were obtained.A meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan(version 5.3;Copenhagen:The Nordic Cochrane Center,The Cochrane Collaboration).ReSULTS Treatment with SGLT2-Is resulted in a decrease in fasting plasma glucose(–18.07 mg/dL;95%CI:-25.32 to–10.82),systolic blood pressure(–1.37 mmHg;95%CI:-2.08 to–0.65),and waist circumference(–1.28 cm;95%CI:-1.39 to–1.18)compared to *** impact on highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol was similar to placebo(0.01 mg/dL;95%CI:-0.05 to 0.07).CONCLUSION SGLT2-Is have a promising role in the management of MetS.
