Anti-inflammatory activity of probiotic Bifidobacterium: Enhancement of IL-10 production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from ulcerative colitis patients and inhibition of IL-8 secretion in HT-29 cells

AIM: To determine the anti-inflammatory activity of probiotic Bifidobacteria in Bifidobacteria-fermented milk (BFM) which is effective against active ulcerative colitis (UC) and exacerbations of UC, and to explore the immunoregulatory mechanisms. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) from UC patients or HT-29 cells were co-cultured with heat-killed probiotic bacteria or culture supernatant of Bifidobacterium breve strain Yakult (BbrY) or Bifidobacterium bifidum strain Yakult (BbiY) to estimate the amount of IL-10 or IL-8 secreted. RESULTS: Both strains of probiotic Bifidobacteria contained in the BFM induced IL-10 production in PBMNC from UC patients, though BbrY was more effective than BbiY. Conditioned medium (CM) and DNA of both strains inhibited IL-8 secretion in HT-29 cells stimulated with TNF-α, whereas no such effect was observed with heat- killed bacteria. The inhibitory effect of CM derived from BbiY was greater than that of CM derived from BbrY. DNAs of the two strains had a comparable inhibitory activity against the secretion of IL-8. CM of BbiY induced a repression of IL-8 gene expression with a higher expression of IκB-ζ mRNA 4 h after culture of HT-29 cells compared to that in the absence of ***: Probiotic Bifidobacterium strains in BFM enhance IL-10 production in PBMNC and inhibit IL-8 secretion in intestinal epithelial cells, suggesting that BFM has anti-inflammatory effects against ulcerative colitis.

Ultrasonic irradiation and solvent effects on destabilization of colloidal suspensions of platinum nanoparticles

In this work,ultrasonic irradiation and destabilizer solvent were used for destabilizing colloidal platinum *** stabilized platinum nanoparticles were prepared in w/o microemulsion systems composed of sodium bis-（2-ethylhexyl） sulfosuccinate（AOT） and four different solvents,namely,cyclohexane,n-hexane,n-heptane,and *** recovery process of Pt nanoparticles from the colloidal systems was performed by exposing the colloidal samples to ultrasonic irradiation and applying various destabilizing *** of UV-visible spectra confirms that the quantity of Pt nanoparticles removed from the suspension depends on the length of time of the ultrasonic irradiation and the nature of the microemulsion oil phase.A critical time for the ultrasonic irradiation has been introduced for the phase separation of colloidal *** perform the solvent study,four destabilizer solvents,namely,dioxane,ethyl acetate,diethyl ether,and tetrahydrofuran,were used for breaking the colloidal suspension of platinum *** on the ’good solvent’ and ’poor solvent’ idea,it is verified that the effect of the destabilizer solvents on the aggregation process follows the following order：tetrahydrofuran 〉 ethyl acetate 〉dioxane〉 diethyl ether.

Preferential solvation of pomalidomide(PMD)was explored in dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)-dimethylformamide(DMF),DMSO-tetrahydrofuran(THF),DMSO-methanol(Me OH),DMSO-isopropanol,DMSO-water,water-DMF,water-THF,water-Me OH,and water–isopropanol binary mixed solvents at 298.15 ***-Rose model was utilized to determine the electronic transition energies(ET)and other preferential solvation parameters,describing solute-solute and solute-solvent *** found thatλmaxsituation shifted with dielectric constant of the pure solvents *** to the obtained results,ETenhanced andλmaxshifted to the lower wavelengths as the percentage of DMSO decreased in the binary mixtures,remarking the important role of DMSO for stabilizing the excited state(π*)of PMD chromophore via efficient intermolecular solute-solvent *** addition,the aqueous binary systems showed an optimum point for the ETvalues as the percentage of water changed in the *** local mole fraction of the solvents in the cybotactic region was also estimated to describe the specific and non-specific interactions in the systems.

Adaptation Decision Support: An Application of System Dynamics Modeling in Coastal Communities

This research develops and applies a system dynamics(SD) model for the strategic evaluation of environmental adaptation options for coastal communities. The article defines and estimates asset-based measures for community vulnerability, resilience, and adaptive capacity with respect to the environmental, economic, social, and cultural pillars of the coastal community under threat. The SD model simulates the annual multidimensional dynamic impacts of severe coastal storms and storm surges on the community pillars under alternative adaptation *** calculation of the quantitative measures provides valuable information for decision makers for evaluating the alternative strategies. The adaptation strategies are designed model results illustrated for the specific context of the coastal community of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The dynamic trend of the measures and model sensitivity analyses for Charlottetown—facing increased frequency of severe storms, storm surges, and sea-level rise—provide impetus for enhanced community strategic planning for the changing coastal *** research is presented as part of the International Community-University Research Alliance C-Change project ‘‘Managing Adaptation to Environmental Change in Coastal Communities: Canada and the Caribbean'' sponsored by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the International Development Resource Centre.

Synchronous double cancers of the common bile duct

We report an extremely rare case of synchronous double cancers of the common bile duct without pancreaticobiliary *** two similar cases have been reported in the English *** retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed a tuberous filling defect in the middle and superior parts of the common bile duct,and mild stenosis in the inferior *** tomography(CT) showed a well enhanced mass in the middle and superior parts of the common bile duct.A single cancer of the middle and superior bile duct was suspected and extra-hepatic bile duct resection was *** eleven months after surgery revealed enhanced inferior bile duct wall and a slightly enhanced tumor within *** review of the CT images taken before first surgery showed enhanced inferior bile duct wall without intrabiliary tumor only on the delayed *** inferior bile duct tumor was suspected to have originally co-existed with the middle and superior bile duct *** was performed *** examination revealed that the middle and superior bile duct tumor was a moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma while the inferior bile duct tumor was a papillary *** two tumors were separated and had different histological findings and growth patterns,further suggesting that they were two primary cancers.

A Stable Numerical Scheme Based on the Hybridized Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Ito-Type Coupled KdV System

The purpose of this paper is to develop a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin(HDG)method for solving the Ito-type coupled KdV *** fact,we use the HDG method for discre-tizing the space variable and the backward Euler explicit method for the time *** linearize the system,the time-lagging approach is also *** numerical stability of the method in the sense of the L2 norm is proved using the energy method under certain assumptions on the stabilization parameters for periodic or homogeneous Dirichlet bound-ary *** experiments confirm that the HDG method is capable of solving the system *** is observed that the best possible rate of convergence is achieved by the HDG ***,it is being illustrated numerically that the corresponding con-servation laws are satisfied for the approximate solutions of the Ito-type coupled KdV *** to the numerical experiments,it is verified that the HDG method could be more efficient than the LDG method for solving some Ito-type coupled KdV systems by comparing the corresponding computational costs and orders of convergence.

A meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method for solving the neutron diffusion equation

The goal of this study is to solve the neutron diffusion equation by using a meshless method and evaluate its performance compared to traditional methods. This paper proposes a novel method based on coupling the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin approach and the moving least squares approximation. This computational procedure consists of two main steps. The first involved applying the moving least squares approximation to construct the shape function based on the problem domain. Then, the obtained shape function was used in the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method to solve the neutron diffusion *** the meshless method is based on eliminating the mesh-based topologies, the problem domain was represented by a set of arbitrarily distributed nodes. There is no need to use meshes or elements for field variable interpolation. The process of node generation is simply and fully automated, which can save time. As this method is a local weak form, it does not require any background integration cells and all integrations are performed locally over small quadrature domains. To evaluate the proposed method,several problems were considered. The results were compared with those obtained from the analytical solution and a Galerkin finite element method. In addition, the proposed method was used to solve neutronic calculations in thesmall modular reactor. The results were compared with those of the citation code and reference values. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method were acceptable. Additionally, adding the number of nodes and selecting an appropriate weight function improved the performance of the meshless local Petrov–Galerkin method. Therefore, the proposed method represents an accurate and alternative method for calculating core neutronic parameters.

The effect of presence of silver nanoparticles in pure N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP)solvent for ethylene gas absorption in an experimental pressure decaying setup has been *** experiments were performed at temperatures of 278.15 K,298.15 K and 328.15 K and different pressures(up to ethylene dew point)as well as different concentrations of silver nanoparticles(0.05 g·L^(-1) and 0.1 g·L^(-1)).The kinetic data of absorption,Henry’s law constants,and heat of absorption were *** of the pure solvent and the nanofluids absorption results revealed that the presence of small amounts of nanoparticles could improve the absorption performance between 1.5%-18%.Finally,the effect of temperature,pressure,and nanoparticle concentration on the equilibrium results were investigated.
