Characterization of Resistance to the Green Rice Leafhopper (<i>Nephotettix cincticeps</i>Uhler) in a Core Collection of Landraces in Rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i>L.)

The green rice leafhopper (GRH;Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) is one of the most devastating insect pests of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) in temperate regions in Asia. Using the rice germplasms with biotic stress resistance is the most effective and environmentally-friendly way to control the insect pests in the paddy. Sixty accessions from a core set of worldwide collection of rice were characterized for resistance to the GRH by antibiosis test both at the seedling and at the booting stages. The positive correlations of average nymph mortality (ANM) were observed between at the seedling stage and at the booting stage on 3 days after infestation (DAI) (r = 0.684**), 5DAI (r = 0.680**), and 7DAI (r = 0.652**), respectively. This result will give us the opportunity to screen resistance to the GRH with the cost-efficient way using rice seedlings in a growth chamber. To classify the 60 accessions evaluated, the ANM of the GRH of each accession was compared to the respective ANM of resistant and susceptible controls with the least significant difference (LSD) value. Based on the statistical difference or similarity of the ANMs to the resistant and the susceptible controls, we proposed the four groups of resistance to the GRH, (I) high level of resistance, (II) considerable level of resistance, (III) moderate level of resistance, and (IV) susceptibility. At the seedling stage, a total of 26 accessions were highly resistant in addition to other 6 for considerable level of resistance and other 10 for moderate level of resistance. At the booting stage, on the other hand, a total of 18 accessions were highly resistant in addition to other 3 for considerable level of resistance and other 5 for moderate level of resistance. A total of 42 accessions with high to moderate level of resistance were distributed across 16 countries in Asia in addition to each one for Madagascar and USA. Bacterial leaf blight of rice (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, is one of the most destructive diseases in Asian rice fields. A high-quality rice variety, LT2, was used as the recipient ***21, which carries the Xa21 gene, was used as the donor parent. The resistance gene Xa21 was introduced into LT2 by marker-assisted backcrossing. Three Xoo races were used to inoculate the improved lines following the clipping method. Eleven BC_3F_3 lines carrying Xa21 were obtained based on molecular markers and agronomic performance. The 11 lines were then inoculated with the three Xoo races. All the 11 improved lines showed better resistance to BLB than the recipient parent LT2. Based on the level of resistance to BLB and their agronomic performance, five lines (BC_3F_3 5.***.5.1, BC_3F_3 5.***.5.12, BC_3F_3 8.***.6.44, BC_3F_3 9.***.4.1 and BC_3F_3 9.***.4.23) were selected as the most promising for commercial release. These improved lines could contribute to rice production in terms of food security.

Gas quenching and vacuum quenching process are widely applied to accelerate solvent volatilization to induce nucleation of perovskites in blade-coating *** this work,we found these two pre-crystallization processes lead to different order of crystallization dynamics within the perovskite thin film,resulting in the differences of additive *** then tailor-designed an additive molecule named 1,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)thiourea to obtain films with fewer defects and holes at the buried interface,and prepared perovskite solar cells with a certified efficiency of 23.75%.Furthermore,this work also demonstrates an efficiency of 20.18%for the large-area perovskite solar module(PSM)with an aperture area of 60.84 cm^(2).The PSM possesses remarkable continuous operation stability for maximum power point tracking of T_(90)>1000 h in ambient air.

An isogeometric approach to free vibration analysis of bi-directional functionally graded porous doubly-curved shallow microshells with variable length-scale parameters

Assessment of different machine learning techniques in predicting the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete

The compressive strength of self-compacting concrete(SCC)needs to be determined during the construction design *** paper shows that the compressive strength of SCC(CS of SCC)can be successfully predicted from mix design and curing age by a machine learning(ML)technique named the Extreme Gradient Boosting(XGB)algorithm,including non-hybrid and hybrid *** ML techniques,such as Linear regression(LR),K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Decision Trees(DTR),Random Forest(RF),Gradient Boosting(GB),and Artificial Neural Network using two training algorithms LBFGS and SGD(denoted as ANN_LBFGS and ANN_SGD),are also compared with the XGB ***,the hybrid models of eight ML techniques and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO)are constructed to highlight the reliability and accuracy of SCC compressive strength prediction by the XGB_PSO hybrid *** highest number of SCC samples available in the literature is collected for building the ML *** with previously published works’performance,the proposed XGB method,both hybrid and non-hybrid models,is the most reliable and robust of the examined techniques,and is more accurate than existing ML methods(R2=0.9644,RMSE=4.7801,and MAE=3.4832).Therefore,the XGB model can be used as a practical tool for engineers in predicting the CS of SCC.

Amine-assisted synthesis of FeS@N-C porous nanowires for highly reversible lithium storage

Iron sulfide is an attractive anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high specific capacity, environmental benignity, and abundant resources. However, its application is hindered by poor cyclability and rate performance, caused by a large volume variation and low conductivity. Herein, iron sulfide porous nanowires confined in an N-doped carbon matrix (FeS@N-C nanowires) are fabricated through a simple amine-assisted solvothermal reaction and subsequent calcination strategy. The as-obtained FeS@N-C nanowires, as an LIB anode, exhibit ultrahigh reversible capacity, superior rate capability, and long-term cycling performance. In particular, a high specific capacity of 1,061 mAh·g−1 can be achieved at 1 A·g−1 after 500 cycles. Most impressively, it exhibits a high specific capacity of 433 mAh·g−1 even at 5 A·g−1. The superior electrochemical performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the porous nanowire structure and the conductive N-doped carbon matrix. These results demonstrate that the synergistic strategy of combining porous nanowires with an N-doped carbon matrix holds great potential for energy storage.

Isolation and Identification of a Bacterium from Marine Shrimp Digestive Tract:A New Degrader of Starch and Protein

It is a practical approach to select candidate probiotic bacterial stains on the basis of their special traits. Production of digestive enzyme was used as a trait to select a candidate probiotic bacterial strain in this study. In order to select a bacterium with the ability to degrade both starch and protein, an ideal bacterial strain STE was isolated from marine shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) intestines by using multiple selective *** selected isolate STE was identified on the basis of its morphological, physiological,and biochemical characteristics as well as molecular analyses. Results of degradation experiments confirmed the ability of the selected isolate to degrade both starch and casein. The isolate STE was aerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile and non-spore-forming, and had catalase and oxidase activities but no glucose fermentation activity. Among the tested carbon/nitrogen sources, only Tween40, alanyl-glycine, aspartyl-glycine, and glycyl-l-glutamic acid were utilized by the isolate STE. Results of homology comparison analyses of the 16S rDNA sequences showed that the isolate STE had a high similarity to several Pseudoalteromonas species and, in the phylogenetic tree, grouped with P. ruthenica with maximum bootstrap support (100%). In conclusion, the isolate STE was characterized as a novel strain belonging to the genus *** study provides a further example of a probiotic bacterial strain with specific characteristics isolated from the host gastrointestinal tract.
