Use of Ointment or Aqueous Extract of Neem(Azadirachta indica)for the Repair of Experimental Skin Lesions in Sheep

The skin is considered the largest organ in the body and this protective barrier can be broken in some situations. The wound healing process is a complex mechanism. Based on the difficulties encountered for treatment, alternatives are sought and one of the options may be phytotherapy. Azadirachta indica, known as Nim, is perhaps one of the most widely known and used medicinal plants. This research aimed to evaluate the viability and effectiveness of therapy with Neem, in the form of ointment or aqueous leaf extract. Eighteen sheep were randomly divided into three groups and subjected to the creation of a 7 × 7 cm excision wound on the chest wall. After, treatment was started according to each group. Animals in G1 did not receive any treatment;in G2, the ointment of Neem was applied and animals in G3 were treated with the preparation of an aqueous solution of Neem leaves. Photographic images were recorded, in addition to blood collection for complete blood count and tissue biopsy. The wound area measurements showed no statistically significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Fibrinogen levels were not different, and there was no difference in platelet levels. In the histopathological evaluation, G2 registered a greater presence of ulceration, when compared to G3, on day 7. On day 14, G2 still had a greater amount of ulceration, differentiating from G1. G2 also registered a greater presence of crust and a higher score of granulation tissue, in the last evaluation period, compared to G3. Analyzing the results obtained in this research and taking into account the conditions in which the study was carried out, it is possible to conclude that the use of Neem was not effective in accelerating the rate of wound healing in sheep.

Obesity is a public health problem and its prevalence increases every year, resulting from a complex interaction between genetic, metabolic and environmental factors, as well as cultural influences. The Intestinal Microbiota is composed of trillions of microorganisms by forming a symbiotic relationship with the host and helping the absorption of various nutrients, increasing the extraction of components of the diet, the lipogenesis and intestinal permeability. Studies show that there is difference between the composition of the intestinal microbiota of an obese person and a healthy one. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the relationship between the Intestinal Microbiota, Obesity and Insulin Resistance and also illustrate some studies on the subject.

Antitrypanosomal Activity of a Semi-Purified Subfraction Rich in Labdane Sesquiterpenes, Obtained from Flowers of Anthemis Tinctoria, Against Trypanosoma Cruzi

In Brazil and several other Latin American countries, Chagas' disease still constitutes a serious medical and social problem, and there is a need to develop new, more-potent drugs with fewer side effects to effectively treat this disease. We investigated the antitrypanosomal effect of a crude extract, fractions, and a semi-purified subfraction rich in a mix- ture of isomeric labdane sesquiterpenes, obtained from flowers of Anthemis tinctoria, against Trypanosoma cruzi. In epimastigote forms, the aqueous crude extract, dichloromethane fraction, and semi-purified subfraction showed a dose-dependent inhibitory activity, with IC50 of 2.3 μg/ml, 1.8 μg/ml, and 0.2 μg/ml, respectively. In the interaction in- dex, the semi-purified subfraction showed a reduction in both the percentage of infected LLCMK2 cells and the mean number of amastigotes per infected cell. The cytotoxicity evaluation demonstrated that the cytotoxic concentrations of the semi-purified subfraction were higher for LLCMK2 cells than for the protozoans, with a selectivity index of 35.0. Epimastigote forms treated with the semi-purified subfraction showed ultrastructural and morphological alterations such as rounding of the cells and bleb formation in the flagellum and cytoplasmic membrane. These results show that the flowers from A. tinctoria may be a source of new drugs with antiprotozoal activity. However, additional in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to validate the use of A. tinctoria in the treatment of Chagas’ disease.

Biochar is known for its effects on carbon sequestration and soil ***,there is a lack of information about its effects on soil physical and hydraulic properties for tropical *** assessed the effects of biochar(BC)plus sugar cane filter cake(FC)rate,and time of interaction on soil physical and hydraulic properties under humid tropical *** this purpose,a field experiment was installed at a loamy sandy soil with five treatments and four replicates:control(only soil),25 Mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake,and 25 Mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake plus 6.25,12.5,and 25 Mg ha^(−1) Miscanthus biochar,respectively,two soil depths(0-10 and 10-20 cm)and two times of interaction(9 and 18 months).Physical prop-erties(aggregate stability,bulk density,total porosity,pores size distribution)and hydraulic properties(soil water holding capacity,hydraulic conductivity,plant-available water holding capacity)were measured after nine and eighteen *** bulk density decreased slightly,and the porosity increased after nine months,for the biochar plus sugar cane filter cake(both 25 Mg ha^(−1)).After 18 months,biochar plus filter cake interaction increase micropores,aggregate stability,and plant-available water *** hydraulic conductivity was not influenced by sugar cane filter ***,biochar significantly reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity when combined with sugar cane filter cake after 18 *** concluded that sugar cane filter cake in combination with biochar modified the pore size distribution,slightly increased plant-available water holding capacity,and significantly decreased saturated hydraulic conductivity.
