Morphometrical findings among dysplasias of oral, cervical and bronchial regions

The purpose of this study was to compare among dysplasia of oral, uterine cervix and bronchus. Using a computer cytomorphometry cell measurement program, the study was based on a retrospective review of smear cases diagnosed with dysplasia of oral, bronchial and uterine cervix, from 2002 to 2010. For 50 - 70 cells from each lesion, nuclear (N) and cytoplasm (C) variables were assessed: area (A), diameter (D), irregularity (I), stain brightness and granularity. NA and ND were highest in OSCC and higher according to dysplastic grading. By contrast, CA and CD were lowest in severe dysplasia. The significant difference of N/C ratio was observed among OSCC to inflammation, mild and moderate dysplasias (p < 0.05). The N/C ratios of mild and moderate dysplasias were equal. Brightness and granularity values of OSCC cases were significantly higher than those of another (p < 0.05). About the difference between mild to moderate dysplasias, it was the easiest to detect of the uterine cervix. All severe dysplasias among the 3 regions were easily identified morphometrically. The deficient in the difference between inflammation to mild dysplasia and mild to moderate dysplasia were obtained in the oral mucosal lesion. The results displayed a significant variation in cytomorphometrical values among the 3 regions. N/C values for uterine cervix and bronchus were well distinguished in comparison with oral dysplasias. Screening of mild and moderate dysplasias requires experience which carries out the comprehensive judgment of the color.

The Far North Region of Cameroon is home to a great diversity of bird species, which unfortunately remains very little explored. This work was initiated to establish an inventory of birds and the factors affecting their diversity and distribution for sustainable management in the Kalfou Forest Reserve (KFR) and its periphery. Two methods were used for sampling, linear strip transects from which direct counts and indirect observations were made and the mist netting to complement the first. In total, 2525 birds were observed, including 149 species, belonging to 20 orders and 55 families. Accipitridae had the greatest number of species (11). The species richness was greater in the KFR (117 species) compared to the periphery (95 species). The specific richness was higher in wooded savannah compared to other habitats. Shannon index was significantly higher in the KFR (3.99) compared to that obtained in the periphery (3.80). The value of the Simpson index was higher on the outskirts of the KFR than on the periphery. The indices of species diversity were greater in the wooded savannah compared to other vegetation types. The seasons had no influence on bird diversity. Among the human activities encountered, the pressure indices were more important for grazing (7.3 contacts/km). Human activities have resulted in a significant decrease in specific richness. Six endangered species were encountered, four belonging to the Accipitridae family. The greater bird diversity in the reserve compared to the periphery shows that protected areas are a long-term solution for biodiversity conservation.

细胞电穿孔技术是指通过施加一定的电场强度可逆地击穿细胞膜,在细胞膜上形成小孔或通路,从而使遗传物质引入细胞内。传统的细胞电穿孔装置往往需要几百伏到几千伏的电压,操作十分危险。该研究采用电绝缘的聚氯乙烯(PVC)薄膜,制作了一种电极间距为80μm的小间距电穿孔装置,并且可以进行高通量操作。经测试,所提出的小间距电穿孔装置实现细胞电穿孔所需的电压比1 mm标准电击杯降低了一个数量级,极大地提高了实验操作的安全性。高通量操作也极大地提高了实验效率,但由于电穿孔转化效率比1 mm标准电击杯低了一个数量级,因此实验参数需要进一步优化。

Objective: The enhancement of multiple functions, including osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and cell recruitment, is required for efficient bone regeneration therapy. Recently, special attention has been focused on the microenvironment of stem cells to facilitate bone regeneration. Herein, we examined the effects of various combinations of hypoxic conditions and osteogenic induction on rat mesenchymal cells, to develop a specific protocol for enhancing the multiple cellular functions beneficial to bone regeneration. Methods: Rat mesenchymal cells, isolated from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and periodontal ligament, were examined. The cells were cultured under varied conditions of O2 tension (hypoxia) and duration and timing of hypoxic exposure, with or without osteogenic induction. Consequently, four different protocols were examined by measuring the gene expression levels of Runx2, Vegfa, and Cxcl12, indicating a capability for osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and cell recruitment, respectively. Finally, the mineralization ability of the rat mesenchymal cells was assessed by quantitating their calcified nodule formation. Results: The simultaneous application of hypoxic exposure and osteogenic induction promoted Vegfa expression in all types of cells, but suppressed Runx2. In contrast, hypoxic preconditioning, followed by osteogenic induction, did not increase the expression of these genes;in fact, Vegfa expression decreased significantly. Among the various protocols, 0.5% O2 exposure for 12 h after osteogenic induction exhibited the largest fold changes of gene expression level, especially of Vegfa. Hypoxic post-conditioning enhanced the formation of calcified nodules in periodontal ligament-derived cells. Conclusion: Short-term hypoxic exposure after osteogenic induction could be used to improve the efficiency of mesenchymal cells for bone regeneration.

Although alcoholic liver disease(ALD) is regarded as a common indication for liver transplantation(LT), debatable issues exist on the requirement for preceding alcoholic abstinence, appropriate indication criteria, predictive factors for alcoholic recidivism, and outcomes following living-donor LT. In most institutions, an abstinence period of six months before LT has been adopted as a mandatory selection criterion. Data indicating that pre-transplant abstinence is an associated predictive factor for alcoholic recidivism supports the reasoning behind this. However, conclusive evidence about the benefit of adopting an abstinence period is yet to be established. On the other hand, a limited number of reports available on living-donor LT experiences for ALD patients suggest that organ donations from relatives have no suppressive effect on alcoholic recidivism. Prevention of alcoholic recidivism has proved to be the most important treatment after LT based on the resultant inferior long-term outcome of patients. Further evaluations are still needed to establish strategies before and after LT for ALD.

Atherosclerotic involvements are an essential causal element of prospect in diabetes mellitus(DM), with carotid atherosclerosis(CA) being a common risk-factor for prospective crisis of coronary artery diseases(CAD) and/or cerebral infarction(CI) in DM subjects. From another point of view, several reports have supplied augmenting proof that hepatocyte growth factor(HGF) has a physiopathological part in DM involvements. HGF has been a mesenchymal-derived polyphenic factor which modulates development, motion, and morphosis of diverse cells, and has been regarded as a humor intermediator of epithelial-mesenchymal interplays. The serum concentrations of HGF have been elevated in subjects with CAD and CI, especially during the acute phase of both disturbances. In our study with 89 type 2 DM patients, the association between serum concentrationsof HGF and risk-factors for macrovascular complicationsinclusive of CA were examined. The average of serumHGF levels in the subjects was more elevated than thereference interval. The serum HGF concentrations associated positively with both intimal-media thickness(IMT)(r = 0.24, P = 0.0248) and plaque score(r = 0.27, P =0.0126), indicating a relationship between the elevatedHGF concentrations and advancement of CA involvements. Multivariate statistical analysis accentuated thatserum concentrations of HGF would be associated inde-pendently with IMT(standardized = 0.28, P = 0.0499).The review indicates what is presently known regardingserum HGF might be a new and meaningful biomarkerof macroangiopathy in DM subjects.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC) does not require advanced techniques, and its performance has therefore rapidly spread worldwide. However, the rate of biliary injuries has not decreased. The concept of the critical view of safety(CVS) was first documented two decades ago. Unexpected injuries are principally due to misidentification of human factors. The surgeon's assumption is a major cause of misidentification, and a high level of experience alone is not sufficient for successful LC. We herein describe tips and pitfalls of LC in detail and discuss various technical ***, based on a review of important papers and our own experience, we summarize the following mandatory protocol for safe LC:(1) consideration that a high level of experience alone is not enough;(2) recognition of the plateau involving the common hepatic duct and hepatic hilum;(3) blunt dissection until CVS exposure;(4) Calot's triangle clearance in the overhead view;(5) Calot's triangle clearance in the view from underneath;(6) dissection of the posterior right side of Calot's triangle;(7) removal of the gallbladder body; and(8) positive CVS exposure. We believe that adherence to this protocol will ensure successful and beneficial LC worldwide, even in patients with inflammatory changes and rare anatomies.

To understand the reality of gambling disorder caused by playing pachinko/pachislot, a national pachinko/pachislot survey was conducted. Based on the survey result, we examined the appearance ratio and the characteristics of individuals with a suspected pachinko-pachislot playing disorder. The analysis result indicated that approximately 0.4% of survey respondents were suspected to have the disorder. This appearance ratio was comparable to the prevalence of gambling disorder in the general population. Those who had a suspected disorder were likely to be divorced, and have no savings. Meanwhile, no distinctive characteristics were found in their gender, annual household income, or the highest educational attainment.
