Correlation of prefrontal activity measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) with mood, BDNF genotype and serum BDNF level in healthy individuals

Depression has been known to reduce the prefrontal activity associated with the execution of certain cognitive tasks, although whether a temporarily depressed or anxious mood in healthy individuals affects the prefrontal blood oxygen level during cognitive tasks is unknown. Combining the measurement of prefrontal activity with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and the two cognitive tasks, namely the letter version of the verbal fluency test (VFT-l) and the Stroop test, we measured the effect of a depressed or anxious mood and gender on the changes in the prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) levels during those cognitive tests in healthy individuals. Depressed mood or anxious mood was assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Thereby we aimed to explore the possibility of NIRS measurement for detecting the early subclinical manifestation of major depression. Moreover, we examined the possible relationships between prefrontal activation and the functional Val66Met polymorphisms of the brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) gene and serum BDNF level. As a result, the increased prefrontal Oxy-Hb levels during cognitive tasks were significantly correlated with the severity of depressed mood in males. The course of the prefrontal Oxy-Hb increase was different depending on the cognitive tasks, i.e., the VFT-l or the Stroop test, in both genders. Correlations of BDNF genotype and serum BDNF level with the prefrontal Oxy-Hb levels during those cognitive tasks were negative. Our results suggest that the early subclinical manifestation of depressed mood in males might be detected by the NIRS measurement, which is not correlated with the individual properties of BDNF.

AIM:To seek the cause of Burkholderia cepacia complex(Bcc) infection outbreak and evaluate the efficacy of new methods for nebulizer maintenance. METHODS: We investigated the annual number of Bcc isolates recovered from clinical samples in our hospital between 1999 and 2013. Swab samples were randomly collected for bacterial culture before patient use from 10 each of the two machine types in August 2001; these included 20 samples from each of the following: Drain tubes, operating water chambers, oscillators, and nebulizing chambers. In addition, 10 samples each of nebulizer solutions before and after use were cultured. For environmental investigation, 10 samples were collected from sinks in the nurse stations of the wards where patients positive for Bcc were hospitalized. Numbers of Bcc isolates were compared before and after introduction of new methods for nebulizer maintenance in October 2001. In addition, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) assay was applied to find the genetic divergence of the Bcc isolates obtained from clinical samples and nebulizers. RESULTS: From January 1999 to December 2013, a total of 487 Bcc isolates were obtained from clinical specimens from 181 patients. Notably, 322(66.1%) Bcc isolates were obtained from clinical specimens from 1999 to 2001, including 244(115 patients) from sputum and 34(11 patients) from blood. During this period, 14 isolates were obtained from nebulizer components. Among these, six were derived from nebulizer drain tubes, five from operating water chambers, and one from the oscillator before patient use, and two from nebulizer solutions after patient use. When Bcc was isolated from the nebulizer solution after patient use, Bcc was simultaneously detected in other parts of the nebulizer. Bcc was not isolated from any nebulizer solution before use. In recent years, graphene field-effect-transistors(GFETs) have demonstrated an outstanding potential for terahertz(THz) photodetection due to their fast response and high-sensitivity. Such features are essential to enable emerging THz applications, including 6G wireless communications, quantum information, bioimaging and security. However, the overall performance of these photodetectors may be utterly compromised by the impact of internal resistances presented in the device, so-called access or parasitic resistances. In this work, we provide a detailed study of the influence of internal device resistances in the photoresponse of high-mobility dual-gate GFET detectors. Such dual-gate architectures allow us to fine tune(decrease) the internal resistance of the device by an order of magnitude and consequently demonstrate an improved responsivity and noise-equivalent-power values of the photodetector, respectively. Our results can be well understood by a series resistance model, as shown by the excellent agreement found between the experimental data and theoretical calculations. These findings are therefore relevant to understand and improve the overall performance of existing high-mobility graphene photodetectors.

In this paper, a novel electrically conductive alumina/nano-carbon network (NCN) composite material was used as an electro- catalyst carrier. A NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode was prepared by electrodepositing NiCu particles onto the surface of the conductive alumina/NCN composite. Morphology, composition, crystalline structure and electrochemical properties of the NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode were investigated. The results showed that NiCu particles can be deposited onto the surface of the alumina/NCN composite by a coelectrodeposition method. NiCu particles in the form of solid solution with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure were relatively uniformly distributed over the carbon layer of the conductive ceramic between alumina grains. As-resulted NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode had a remarkably enhanced electrochemical activity and high stabilization for oxygen evolution reaction, which indicated its potential application with enhanced performance to oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, based on the electrochemical measurement, the mechanism of the OER on the NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode was discussed.

The energy bandgap is an intrinsic character of semiconductors, which largely determines their properties. The ability to continuously and reversibly tune the bandgap of a single device during real time operation is of great importance not only to device physics but also to technological applications. Here we demonstrate a widely tunable bandgap of few-layer black phosphorus （BP） by the application of vertical electric field in dual-gated BP field-effect transistors. A total bandgap reduction of 124 meV is observed when the electrical displacement field is increased from 0.10 V/nm to 0.83 V/nm. Our results suggest appealing potential for few-layer BP as a tunable bandgap material in infrared optoelectronies, thermoelectric power generation and thermal imaging.

The biology of colorectal cancer differs according to its location within the large intestine.A report published in a previous issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology (November 2010) evaluated the importance of tumor location as a risk factor for lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer,and showed that rectal cancer is prone to metastasize to lymph nodes as compared with colon ***,in order to conclude that the tumor location is independently associated with the occurrence of lymph node metastasis,it is necessary to consider a selection bias or other patientand tumorrelated factors carefully.

AIM： To clarify differences in mucin phenotype, prolif- erative activity and oncogenetic alteration among sub- types of colorectal laterally spreading tumor （LST）. METHODS： LSTs, defined as superficial elevated lesions greater than 10 mm in diameter with a low vertical axis, were macroscopically classified into two subtypes：（1） a granular type （Gr-LST） composed of superficially spread- ing aggregates of nodules forming a fiat-based lesion with a granulonodular and uneven surface; and （2） a non-granular type （NGr-LST） with a flat smooth surface and an absence of granulonodular formation. A total of 69 LSTs, comprising 36 Gr-LSTs and 33 NGr-LSTs, were immunohistochemically stained with MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC6, CD10 （markers of gastrointestinal cell lineage）, p53, 13-catenin and Ki-67 antibodies, and examined for alteration in exon 1 of v-Ki-ras2 Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog （KRAS） and exon 15 of v-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homologue B1 （BRAF） by poly- merase chain reaction followed by direct sequencing. RESULTS： Histologically, 15 Gr-LST samples were ad- enomas with low-grade dysplasia （LGD）, 12 were high- grade dysplasia （HGD） and 9 were adenocarcinomas invading the submucosa （INV）, while 12 NGr-LSTs demonstrated LGD, 14 HGD and 7 INV. In the proximal colon, MUC5AC expression was significantly higher in the Gr-type than the NGr-type. MUC6 was expressed only in NGr-LST. MUC2 or CD10 did not differ. P53 ex- pression demonstrated a significant stepwise increment in progression through LGD-HGD-INV with both types of LST. Nuclear β-catenin expression was significantly higher in the NGr-type. Ki-67 expression was signifi- cantly higher in the Gr-type in the lower one third zone of the tumor. In proximal, but not distal colon tumors, the incidence of KRAS provided mutation was signifi- cantly higher in the Gr-type harboring a specific muta- tional pattern （G12V）. BRAF mutations （V600E） were detected only in two Gr-LSTs. CONCLUSION： The two subtypes of LST,

Superlubricity enabled dry transfer of non-encapsulated graphene

Transferring high-quality exfoliated graphene flakes onto different substrates while keeping the graphene free of polymer residues is of great importance, but at the same time very challenging. Currently, the only feasible way is the so-called all-dry "pick-and-lift" method, in which a hexagonal boron nitride(hBN) flake is employed to serve as a stamp to pick up graphene from one substrate and to lift it down onto another substrate. The transferred graphene samples, however,are always covered or encapsulated by hBN flakes, which leads to difficulties in further characterizations. Here, we report an improved "pick-and-lift" method, which allows ultra-clean graphene flakes to be transferred onto a variety of substrates without hBN coverage. Basically, by exploiting the superlubricity at the graphene/hBN stack interface, we are able to remove the top-layer hBN stamp by applying a tangential force and expose the underneath graphene.

How to fabricate high-quality microcavities simply and at low cost without causing damage to environmentally sensitive active layers such as perovskites are crucial for the studies of exciton–polaritons,however,it remains challenging in the field of microcavity ***,once the top mirror is deposited,the detuning of the microcavity is fixed and there is no easy way to tune ***,we have developed a method for deterministically transferring silver mirrors,which is relatively simple and guarantees the active layer from damaging of high temperature,particle bombardment,etc.,during the deposition of the top ***,with the help of a glass probe,we demonstrate a replaceable silver transfer method to tune the detuning of the microcavity,thereby changing the coupling of photons and excitons *** developed deterministic and replaceable silver mirror transfer methods will provide the capability to fabricate high-quality and tunable microcavities and play an active role in the development of the exciton–polariton field.
