BACKGROUND A congenital intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(IPSVS)is a rare vascular abnormality that is characterized by an anomalous intrahepatic venous tract that connects the intrahepatic portal vein with the hepatic venous system.Hepatic encephalopathy is an indication for IPSVS embolization,which is technically challenging because rapid blood flow through shunts can induce the migration of embolization material to systemic veins.This case report discusses the efficacy of percutaneous balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration for treating patients with IPSVSs.CASE SUMMARY A 75-year-old woman presented with a six-month history of repeated hepatic encephalopathy due to an IPSVS without liver cirrhosis.We successfully embolized the IPSVS using percutaneous balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration with interlocking detachable coils.After the procedure,the patient exhibited no symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy for 14 mo.CONCLUSION Balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration with detachable coils can be effective for the endovascular treatment of an IPSVS.

Psychological potential field and human eye fixation on binary line-drawing images: A comparative experimental study

Quantitatively evaluating the psychological and perceptual effects of objects is an important issue,but is difficult. In cognitive studies, the psychological potential field(PPF), which represents psychological intensities in vision and can be calculated by applying computational algorithms to digital images, may help with this issue. Although studies have reported using the PPF to evaluate psychological effects, such as impressions, detailed investigations on how the PPF represents psychological perception and its limitations have not yet been performed. Another relevant tool is the fixation map, which visualizes human eye fixations;this map is generated from actual measurements acquired by eye-tracking and does not represent psychological effects directly. Although the PPF and the fixation map are based on visual imaging, they have never been compared. In this paper, we do so for the first time, using psychological and perceptual properties of line-drawing images. The results demonstrate the difference between these methods, including their representation of different properties with respect to visual perception. Moreover, the similarity between the two methods highlights the possibility of assessing perceptual phenomena such as categorization and cognition of objects based on human vision.

L-type amino acid transporters(LATs) mainly assist the uptake of neutral amino acids into cells. Four LATs(LAT1, LAT2, LAT3 and LAT4) have so far been identified. LAT1(SLC7A5) has been attracting much attention in the field of cancer research since it is commonly up-regulated in various cancers. Basic research has made it increasingly clear that LAT1 plays a predominant role in malignancy. The functional significance of LAT1 in cancer and the potential therapeutic application of the features of LAT1 to cancer management are described in this review.

AIM To investigate the expression of integrinsin rats liver during 3’-Me-DAB inducedhepatocarcinogenesis and to find out therelationship between integrins and liver cancermetastasis.METHODS The expressions of integrins α1,α2,α3 and α5 and epidermal keratin（EK）wereobserved by immunohistochemical PAP method.RESULTS In the normal liver tissues,hepatocytes express integrins α1 and α5 and inthe bile duct epithlium,EK.In liver cirrhosis,hepatocytes highly express integrins α1,α2,α3and α5 and in hyperplastic bile duct epithelium,integrins α1,α5 and EK.Expression of integrinsα1,α2,α3 and α5 were obviously decreased in thepreneoplastic nodules and primary carcinomabut expressions of integrins α1 and α5 inmetastasis in the lung and diaphragma werehigher than those in primary carcinoma.CONCLUSION Integrins α1 and α5 may play amajor role in chemically inducedhepatocarcinogenesis and metastasis in rats.

Ansa pancreatica as a predisposing factor for recurrent acute pancreatitis

AIM To determine the non-biased prevalence and clinical significance of ansa pancreatica in patients with acute pancreatitis using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).METHODS Our institutional review board approved this crosssectional study, which consisted of a community-based cohort of 587 consecutive participants in a whole-body health-check program, and 73 subjects with episode of acute pancreatitis(55 patients with a single episode of acute pancreatitis, and 18 patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis). All of the subjects underwent abdominal MRI including magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, medical examinations, and blood tests. Two board-certified, diagnostic, abdominal radiologists evaluated the images, and ansa pancreatica was diagnosed based on its characteristic anatomy on MRI.RESULTS Compared with the community group [5/587(0.85%)], patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis had a significantly higher frequency of ansa pancreatica [2/18(11.1%)](P = 0.016; OR = 14.3; 95%CI: 1.27-96.1), but not compared with patients with single-episode acute pancreatitis [1/55(1.8%)](P = 0.42; OR = 2.1; 95%CI: 0.44-19.7). Multiple logistic regression analysis using age, alcohol intake, presence of ansa pancreatica, and presence of autoimmune disease as independent covariates, revealed a significant relationship between the presence of ansa pancreatica and recurrent acute pancreatitis. The presence of autoimmune disease was also significantly associated with the onset of recurrent acute pancreatitis. On the other hand, neither age nor alcohol intake were significantly related to the onset of recurrent acute pancreatitis.CONCLUSION The present study is the first to provide robust evidence that the presence of ansa pancreatica is significantly associated with recurrent acute pancreatitis.

Shown is a possibility to make the image of a laser beam over a distance of 2.5 m, formed by the spherical multi-segment mirror installed in LHD, twice sharper by suitably adjusting the inclination of each segment mirror, which is equivalent to making the mirror surface aspherical. This will further enhance the attractiveness of a mirror-based Thomson scattering system.

Heat treatment of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)has provided a wide variety of functional carbons coordinated with metal compounds.In this study,two kinds of zinc-based MOF(ZMOF),C_(16)H_(10)O_(4)Zn(ZMOF1)and C_(8)H_(4)O_(4)Zn(ZMOF2),were prepared.ZMOF1 and ZMOF2 were carbonized at 1000℃,forming CZMOF1 and CZMOF2,respectively.The specific surface area(S_(BET))of CZMOF2 was~2700 m^(2)g^(−1),much higher than that of CZMOF1(~1300 m^(2)g^(−1)).A supercapacitor electrode based on CZMOF2 achieved specific capacitances of 360,278,and 221 F g^(−1)at 50,250,and 1000 mA g^(−1)in an aqueous electrolyte(H2SO_(4)),respectively,the highest values reported to date for ZMOF-derived electrodes under identical conditions.The practical applicability of the CZMOF-based supercapacitor was verified in non-aqueous electrolytes.The initial capacitance retention was 78%after 100000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g^(−1).Crucially,the high capacitance of CZMOF2 arises from pore generation during carbonization.Below 1000℃,pore generation is dominated by the Zn/C ratio of ZMOFs,as carbon atoms reduce the zinc oxides formed during carbonization.Above 1000℃,a high O/C ratio becomes essential for pore generation because the oxygen functional groups are pyrolyzed.These findings will provide insightful information for other metal-based MOFderived multifunctional carbons.

L6 skeletal muscle myoblasts stably overexpressing glucose transporter GLUT1 or GLUT4 with exofa- cial myc-epitope tags were characterized for their response to insulin. In clonally selected cultures, 2-deoxyglucose uptake into L6-GLUT1myc myoblasts and myotubes was linear within the time of study. In L6-GLUT1myc and L6-GLUT4myc myoblasts, 100 nmol/L insulin treatment increased the GLUT1 content of the plasma membrane by 1.58±0.01 fold and the GLUT4 content 1.96±0.11 fold, as well as the 2-deoxyglucose uptake 1.53±0.09 and 1.86±0.17 fold respectively, all by a wortmannin-inhibitable manner. The phosphorylation of Akt in these two cell lines was increased by insulin. L6-GLUT1myc myoblasts showed a dose-dependent stimulation of glucose uptake by insulin, with unaltered sensitiv- ity and maximal responsiveness compared with wild type cells. By contrast, the improved insulin re- sponsiveness and sensitivity of glucose uptake were observed in L6-GLUT4myc myoblasts. Earlier studies indicated that forskolin might affect insulin-stimulated GLUT4 translocation. A 65% decrease of insulin-stimulated 2-deoxyglucose uptake in GLUT4myc cells was not due to an effect on GLUT4 mobi- lization to the plasma membrane, but instead on direct inhibition of GLUT4. Forskolin and dipyridamole are more potent inhibitors of GLUT4 than GLUT1. Alternatively, pentobarbital inhibits GLUT1 more than GLUT4. The use of these inhibitors confirmed that the overexpressed GLUT1 or GLUT4 are the major functional glucose transporters in unstimulated and insulin-stimulated L6 myoblasts. Therefore, L6-GLUT1myc and L6-GLUT4myc cells provide a platform to screen compounds that may have differ- ential effects on GLUT isoform activity or may influence GLUT isoform mobilization to the cell surface of muscle cells.

Recommender system for discovery of inorganic compounds

A recommender system based on experimental databases is useful for the efficient discovery of inorganic compounds.Here,we review studies on the discovery of as-yet-unknown compounds using recommender systems.The first method used compositional descriptors made up of elemental features.Chemical compositions registered in the inorganic crystal structure database(ICSD)were supplied to machine learning for binary classification.The other method did not use any descriptors,but a tensor decomposition technique was adopted.The predictive performance for currently unknown chemically relevant compositions(CRCs)was determined by examining their presence in other databases.According to the recommendation,synthesis experiments of two pseudo-ternary compounds with currently unknown structures were successful.Finally,a synthesis-condition recommender system was constructed by machine learning of a parallel experimental data-set collected in-house using a polymerized complex method.Recommendation scores for unexperimented conditions were then evaluated.Synthesis experiments under the targeted conditions found two yet-unknown pseudo-binary oxides.
