Autoantibody against neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) α3 subunit is implicated in severe autonomic dysfunction in the patients with autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG). Although this autoantibody has been revealed to impair fast excitatory synaptic transmission in autonomic ganglia, its precise mechanism remains unknown. Here, we show that antibody-induced reduction of cell-surface α3 subunits result in impairment of nicotine-evoked Ca2+ influx in stably transfected human embryonic kidney cells. These effects of the antibody were remarkably inhibited by interfering with the endocytic machinery at low-temperature. We conclude that reduction of nAChR in autonomic ganglia can be mediated by the endocytosis of α3 subunits, and resulted in autonomic failure in AAG patients.

Outcomes of bile duct cannulation using a novel contrast-enhanced catheter: A single-center, retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a challenging procedure involving bile duct *** the development of several cannulation devices,none have effectively facilitated the *** To evaluate the efficacy of a recently developed catheter for bile duct *** We retrospectively examined 342 patients who underwent initial *** compared the success rate of bile duct cannulation and the incidence of complications between the groups using existing and novel *** The overall success rates of bile duct cannulation were 98.3%and 99.1%in the existing and novel catheter groups,respectively(P=0.47).The bile duct cannulation rate using the standard technique was 73.0%and 82.1%in the existing and novel catheter groups,respectively(P=0.042).Furthermore,when catheterization was performed by expert physicians,the bile duct cannulation rate was significantly higher in the novel catheter group(81.3%)than in the existing catheter group(65.2%)(P=0.017).The incidence of difficult cannulation was also significantly lower in the novel catheter group(17.4%)than in the existing catheter group(33.0%)(P=0.019).CONCLUSION The novel catheter improved the bile duct cannulation rate using the standard technique and reduced the frequency of difficult cannulation cases,valuable tool in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures performed by experts.

The polyelectrolyte complex formed from the polyanion and polycation was studied by turbidimetry, static and electrophoretic light scattering, and elementary analysis. Sodium salts of polyacrylate （PA） and heparin （Hep） were chosen as the polyanion, and hydrochloric salts of poly（vinyl amine）（PVA） and chitosan （Chts） as the polycation. Although these vinyl polymers and polysaccharides have remarkably different backbone chemical structures and linear charge densities, all the four combinations PA-PVA, PA-Chts, Hep-PVA, and Hep-Chts provide almost stoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes which are slightly charged owing to the adsorption of the excess polyelectrolyte component onto the neutral complex. The charges stabilize the complex colloids in aqueous solution of a non-stoichiometric mixture, and the aggregation number of the complex colloids increases with approaching to the stoichiometric mixing ratio. The mixing ratio dependence of the aggregation number for the four complexes is explained by the model proposed in the previous study.

Study on dynamic response of embedded long span corrugated steel culverts using scaled model shaking table tests and numerical analyses

A series of scaled-model shaking table tests and its simulation analyses using dynamic finite element method were performed to clarify the dynamic behaviors and the seismic stability of embedded corrugated steel culverts due to strong earth-quakes like the 1995 Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake. The dynamic strains of the embedded culvert models and the seismic soil pressure acting on the models due to sinusoidal and random strong motions were investigated. This study verified that the cor-rugated culvert model was subjected to dynamic horizontal forces (lateral seismic soil pressure) from the surrounding ground, which caused the large bending strains on the structure; and that the structures do not exceed the allowable plastic deformation and do not collapse completely during strong earthquake like Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake. The results obtained are useful for design and construction of embedded long span corrugated steel culverts in seismic regions.

To design optimal pyrometallurgical processes for nickel and cobalt recycling, and more particularly for the end-of-life process of Ni-Co-Fe-based end-of-life（EoL） superalloys, knowledge of their activity coefficients in slags is essential. In this study, the activity coefficients of NiO and CoO in CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 slag, a candidate slag used for the EoL superalloy remelting process, were measured using gas/slag/metal equilibrium experiments. These activity coefficients were then used to consider the recycling efficiency of nickel and cobalt by remelting EoL superalloys using CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 slag. The activity coefficients of NiO and CoO in CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 slag both show a positive deviation from Raoult＇s law, with values that vary from 1 to 5 depending on the change in basicity. The activity coefficients of NiO and CoO peak in the slag with a composition near B =（%CaO）/（%SiO_2） = 1, where B is the basicity. We observed that controlling the slag composition at approximately B = 1 effectively reduces the cobalt and nickel oxidation losses and promotes the oxidation removal of iron during the remelting process of EoL superalloys.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube networks were confirmed to exhibit a linear decrease in resistivity with increasing temperature from 100 to above 400 *** linearity was explained using a defect scattering model that involved Friedel oscillations(that is,electron-electron interactions).The applicability of this model,which was originally proposed for graphene,to carbon nanotubes was assessed based on a comparison of various experimental *** in the slopes of the resistivity-temperature plots following the introduction of defects,as well as an effect of charge concentration on the slope were key predictions of this *** results obtained from few-walled carbon nanotube networks are also *** the literature,linear resistivity-temperature plots were obtained from other graphene derivatives,indicating that the linearity originates from the hexagonal symmetry of these *** present work also indicated a relationship between the appearance of linearity and negative magnetoresistance above 100 *** on a mechanism incorporating scattering in association with Friedel oscillations and conventional electron conduction models,the universality of resistivity-temperature plots obtained from carbon nanotube networks is introduced.

Selective excitation of two-wave structure depending on crystal orientation under shock compression

Single crystals subjected to shock compression exhibit responses with distinct two-wave structures for certain crystal ***,little is known to date regarding how the shock response depends on crystal orientation,and especially why the two-wave structure depends on the crystal *** this work,molecular dynamics simulations of shock compressions in copper single crystals are performed to investigate the orientation dependence of shock responses and the corresponding deformation *** copper single crystals with[001],[011],[012],and[123]crystal orientations along the depth direction are ***[011],[012],and[123]crystal orientations of copper single crystals show distinct two-wave structures in their shock responses,while such a two-wave structure in the shock response is not seen for those orientations having a[001]crystal *** potential causes are analyzed by considering the propagation velocities of both elastic and plastic *** develop a technique for identifying twin structures in face-centered cubic crystals and this technique can effectively identify the twin *** morphology of shock-induced defects(e.g.,dislocations and twins)shows the significant dependence of crystal orientation and the mechanisms behind these are discussed in ***,the Johnson-Cook constitutive model describing dynamic deformations at high temperatures and high strain rates is used to analyze the relationships between the shock responses and microscopic *** predictions of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model are consistent with the results of the molecular dynamics simulations.
