Expression of Interleukin-11 and Interleukin-11 receptor a in human colorectal adenocarcinoma; Immunohistochemical analyses and correlation with clinicopathological factors

AIM: There is strong evidence that interleukin-11 (IL-11) is involved in the regulation of tumor progression, cellular growth and differentiation. Recently, interleukin-11 receptor (IL-11R) has been detected on some cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the expression of IL-11 and IL-11R in colorectal adenocarcinoma. METHODS: To elucidate the involvement of IL-11 and IL-11Ra in human intestinal adenocarcinomas, we examined 115 cases of surgically resected human colonic adenocarcinoma and 11 cases of adenoma by immuno-histochemistry and Western blotting. RESULTS: Among 115 cases of adenocarcinoma, 100 cases (87.0%) showed positive staining in the cytoplasm of carcinoma cells for the IL-11, and 87 cases (75.6%) were positive for the IL-11Ra. Six cases (54.5%) and four cases (36.4%) of 11 adenomas were positive for IL-11 and IL-11Ra, respectively. The expression of IL-11Ra correlated with the histological differentiation (P=0.033503), the depth of tumor invasion (P=0.006395), Dukes' classification (P= 0.015648) and lymphatic invasion (P=0.003865). However, the expression of IL-11Ra was not correlated with the venous invasion and the presence of lymph node metastasis. The expression of IL-11 was not correlated with any clinicopathological factors. In Western blot analysis, two human colorectal carcinoma cell lines and four tissues of surgically resected human carcinoma expressed both IL-11 and IL-11Ra proteins. CONCLUSION: IL-11 and IL-11Ra are highly expressed in human colorectal adenocarcinoma and the IL-11Ra expression is correlated with clinicopathological factors. These findings suggest that the expression of IL-11Ra is an important factor for the invasion of human colorectal adenocarcinoma.

Covering Salesman Problem with Nodes and Segments

In the Covering Salesman Problem (CSP), a distribution of nodes is provided, and the objective is to identify the shortest-length tour of a subset of all given nodes such that each node is not on the tour which is within a radius r of any node on the tour. In this paper, we define a new covering problem called the CSP with Nodes and Segments (CSPNS). The main difference between the CSP and the CSPNS is that in the CSPNS, not only the nodes on the tour but also the segments on the tour can cover the nodes not on the tour. We formulated the CSPNS via integer programming and found an optimal solution by using a general-purpose mixed-integer program solver. Benchmark instances of the CSPNS were generated by DIMACS, which is one of the benchmark problems of the Traveling Salesman Problem. Optimal solutions could not be obtained in a reasonable time frame for a large size of instances. Thus, in this study, we developed a simple heuristic method to find good near-optimal solutions to the CSPNS. The proposed heuristic method quickly finds good solutions.

Role of Double MgO/ZnO Buffer Layers on Defect Reduction of ZnO Layers Grown on c-Sapphire by P-MBE

We investigated the role of double low temperature (LT)-MgO and LT-ZnO buffer layers on defect reduction of ZnO layers grown on c-sapphire by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (P-MBE). Buffer growth parameters consisting of thickness, growth rate, and annealing were evaluated. We found that surface morphology and crystalline quality of the ZnO layers were improved by controlling of the buffer layers. There is no improvement in morphology and crystalline quality of the ZnO layers if the buffer thickness is less than critical thickness. The critical thickness is determined to be 1.5 nm for MgO buffer and 7 nm for ZnO buffer layers. We also found that low growth rate of the buffer layers is preferred for high quality ZnO layer. Furthermore, surface, structural, optical, and electrical qualities of the ZnO layers were improved by annealing MgO buffer at high temperature. Dislocation density of the ZnO layer was reduced from 5.3 × 109 cm-2 to 1.9 × 109 cm-2 by annealing the MgO buffer layer. The results indicate that we can engineer defect in highly mismatched heteroepitaxial using buffer layers.

Direct Process to Prepare Crystallized Freestanding Membranes of Hydroxyapatite Using Sacrificial Layer of Barium-Compounds

Freestanding membrane (FSM) of hydroxyapatite (HA) is a thin sheet of pure HA without any supporting substrates. Our original preparation process of FSM of HA had three steps: The first was the deposition of HA layer on sacrificial layer of solvent-soluble materials, the second was separation of FSM of HA by means of dissolution of sacrificial layer, and the third was post-annealing to crystallize FSM of HA. To date, the post-annealing process was a serious bottleneck of productivity owing to its too long time. In this short report, we proposed a novel sacrificial layer, heatproof and water-soluble Ba-compound, which makes the direct deposition of crystallized HA possible due to its heatproof property because the problem on the original process was that the previous sacrificial layers have no heatproof property and HA layer should be deposited as amorphous. We can deposit the Ba-compound sacrificial layer only in 1 hour followed with the direct deposition of crystallized HA layer, substituting the 20 hours of post-annealing. The FSM of HA was separated successfully from the substrate by means of dissolution of Ba-compound with water. Our novel process can shrink the process time by 19 hours.

Subclinical synovitis detected by magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography following clinical remission in patients with rheumatoid arthritis:A retrospective study

Performance Evaluation of Heat Exchangers in OTEC Using Ammonia/Water Mixture as Working Fluid

The ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) system is a promising solution to provide stable electricity supply. Although the available temperature difference in OTEC systems is small, an ammonia/water mixture as working fluid is expected to decrease irreversible losses in the heat exchangers and to improve system performance. However, in actual heat exchangers, an adequate temperature crossing does not occur in the condenser but in the evaporator. Therefore, clarification of this characteristic is important. To date, the logarithmic temperature difference (LMTD) method is used in performance evaluations of OTEC heat exchangers. This method is of limited use if physical properties of fluids vary. A generalized mean temperature difference (GMTD) method is introduced to perform this evaluation. As changes in fluid property values can be considered in the GMTD method, method dependencies on heat exchanger characteristics, effectiveness, and system characteristics can be studied. In particular, GMTD and LMTD using a pure substance were found to be almost equal. Mean temperature differences using mixtures as working fluid were higher in the evaporator, but lower in the condenser, from the GMTD method than from the LMTD method. For higher ammonia concentrations in ammonia/water mixtures, the mean temperature differences from both methods are different.

Despite the recent development in radiometric dating of numerous zircons by LA-ICPMS, mineral separation still remains a major obstacle, particularly in the search for the oldest material on Earth. To improve the efficiency in zircon separation by an order of magnitude, we have designed/developed a new machine-an automatic zircon separator（AZS）. This is designed particularly for automatic pick-up of100 μm-sized zircon grains out of a heavy mineral fraction after conventional separation procedures. The AZS operates in three modes：（1） image processing to choose targeted individual zircon grains out of all heavy minerals spread on a tray,（2） automatic capturing of the individual zircon grains with microtweezers, and（3） placing them one-by-one in a coordinated alignment on a receiving tray. The automatic capturing was designed/created for continuous mineral selecting without human presence for many hours. This software also enables the registration of each separated zircon grain for dating, by recording digital photo-image, optical（color） indices, and coordinates on a receiving tray. We developed two new approaches for the dating; i.e.（1） direct dating of zircons selected by LA-ICPMS without conventional resin-mounting/polishing,（2） high speed U-Pb dating, combined with conventional sample preparation procedures using the new equipment with multiple-ion counting detectors（LA-MIC-ICPMS）.With the first approach, Pb-Pb ages obtained from the surface of a mineral were crosschecked with the interior of the same grain after resin-mounting/polishing. With the second approach, the amount of time required for dating one zircon grain is ca. 20 s, and a sample throughput of 〉150 grains per hour can be achieved with sufficient precision（ca. 0.5%）.We tested the practical efficiency of the AZS, by analyzing an Archean Jack Hills conglomerate in Western Australia with the known oldest（〉4.3 Ga） zircon on Earth. 针对地震作用下高层隔震结构易发生摇摆倾覆问题,提出考虑支座受拉效应的地震作用界限理论,分析了结构高宽比和支座设计面压对界限地震作用的影响规律,给出了高层隔震结构的高宽比限值。通过大高宽比隔震结构振动台试验,对不同峰值地震作用下的试验结果进行分析,得到EL波和Taft波峰值0.6 g作用下边角支座进入受拉状态。将振动台试验结果与数值分析结果及界限理论结果对比,发现理论公式及数值分析与试验结果均具有较好的一致性。最后采用数值分析方法研究了结构高宽比、支座设计面压和地震作用峰值对高层隔震结构支座拉应力及隔震层摇摆效应的影响规律。
