The analysis on a density stratification layer consisting of multiple gases in the reactor containment vessel is important for the safety assessment of sever accidents. The JAEA （Japan Atomic Energy Agency） has started the project on the containment thermal hydraulics. We carried out CFD （computational fluid dynamics） analyses in order to investigate the erosion of the density stratification layer by a vertical buoyant jet under this project. We used the RANS （Reynolds averaged numerical simulation） and LES （large eddy simulation） models to analyze the erosion of a density stratification layer by a vertical buoyant jet in a small vessel which represents a containment vessel. This numerical study calculates the turbulent mixing of a two-component （air and helium） gas mixture. The turbulence models used for the RANS analyses are two types of k-ε models. The first model is the low Reynolds number k-ε model developed by Launder and Sharma. The second model is modified from the first model in order to accurately consider the turbulent production and damping in a stratification layer. The results indicated while the erosion rate calculated by the low-Re k-ε model was much faster than that of the LES model, the modified k-ε model could calculate the erosion rate similar to the LES result.

Water bodies in urban areas are important as recreational areas. Thus, management plans that maintain high water quality are quite important. At the Hatadate Water Park adjacent to Miyagi University, water quality parameters such as visibility, COD, TOC, and TN were monitored at a small pond and the inflowing stream from August to December in 2011, and photographs were taken of these sites. Variations in COD and TOC were highly related to changes in the physical appearance, especially changes in vegetation. These findings suggest: 1) the importance of management of vegetation for water quality control;and 2) the importance of collecting photographic records of sites for research purposes of interpreting data and even as a data point of water quality. Together with the water quality goals for water bodies in urban areas proposed by Sudo et al. [1], these water quality criteria were assessed, and it was notable that COD often exceeded the set goal. These results suggest that the maintenance of vegetation is more important than controlling incoming TN for primary production in the pond. Seasonal variations in COD and TOC were plotted for surface water of Kamafusa and Okura dams, both are important lakes in Miyagi area and the catchments of both lakes are mainly hilly area, using published water quality reports. Similar annual-cycle changing patterns were shown both for the dams, implying that some kinds of ecological factors in the catchments are affecting the water qualities of the dam, even at those larger scale water bodies. Finally, by shifting the focus from only water to upstream features such as small park, or pocket park, with a parking lot for the water body, the importance of landscape including vegetation and tree cover was highlighted.

Preparation of Gold Nanoparticles Loaded Chitin Nanofiber Composite

Chitin nanofibers (CNFs) processed from second most abundant biomolecule chitin were loaded with gold metallic nanoparticles (Au NPs) to obtained hybrid organic-inorganic composite which was molded in different forms dispersion, flakes, powder, and transparent thin film. First pre-organized Au NPs were prepared in soluble triblock copolymer poly (methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) by reduction of gold precursor salt (HAuCl43H2O) by NaBH4 then NPs were mixed with diluted CNFs suspension to obtain CNFs-Au NPs composite. CNFs of width 25 - 40 nm were prepared by combination of chemical and mechanical processing in wet acidic condition from 1 wt% crab shell chitin slurry. When polymer stabilized Au NPs blended with CNF suspension, all Au NPs and 56% polymer were found mass transferred from water phase to entangle with more polar moieties of chitin. Composite’s suspension and compressed dried film were characterized by recording digital images, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, and XRD spectroscopies. When 70 m thin non transparent composite film was impregnated with tricyclodecane dimethanol dimethacrylate (TCDDMA) resin and subsequent polymerized with photoinitiator 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone, the film became transparent due to filling of nanosized CNFs in the cages of the resin.

The current research conducted a longitudinal study of new graduate nurses at 3 times-prior to their employment as nurses and 3 months and 1 year afterward. This study yielded 3 findings. 1) The mental health of new graduate nurses significantly worsens 3 months after employment as a nurse and mental health 1 year after employment as a nurse was significantly worse than that before employment. 2) A sense of coherence (SOC) is the ability to cope with stressors, and the 3 components of SOC decreased significantly in the year after employment as a nurse. 3) The mental health of new graduate nurses was significantly affected by a low SOC and by previous diminishing of SOC. Findings suggested the importance of support to sustain and improve the mental health of new graduate nurses and the importance of approaches in the workplace to encourage the development of SOC.

Multi-Detector-Row CT Diagnosis of Adrenal Incidentaloma in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma

We investigate the diagnostic reliability of differentiating between lipid-poor adrenal adenomas and metastatic adrenal tumors originating from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using a routine dynamic CT protocol for liver imaging. Eighteen metastatic adrenal tumors originating from HCC and 13 lipid-poor adrenal adenomas were identified. Dynamic CT data were analyzed for CT attenuation of adrenal lesions before and after contrast administration. When a cutoff of 36 HU was set for adrenal lesions at pre-contrast attenuation, the sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of metastatic lesions were 94.4%and 92.3%, respectively. Attenuation criteria on pre-contrast CT may help optimize the differentiation between these lesions.

Despite recent advances in surgical techniques and perioperative management, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer(PCa) remains extremely poor. To provide optimal treatment for each patient with Pca, superior biomarkers are urgently needed in all phases of management from early detection to staging, treatment monitoring, and prognosis. In the blood of patients with cancer, circulating tumor cells(CTCs) and cell-free nucleic acids(cf NAs), such as DNA, m RNA, and noncoding RNA have been recognized. In the recent years, their presence in the blood has encouraged researchers to investigate their potential use as novel blood biomarkers, and numerous studies have demonstrated their potential clinical utility as a biomarker for certain types of cancer. This concept, called "liquid biopsy" has been focused on as a less invasive, alternative approach to cancer tissue biopsy for obtaining genetic and epigenetic aberrations that contribute to oncogenesis and cancer progression. In this article, we review the available literature on CTCs and cfN As in patients with cancer, particularly focusing on PCa, and discuss future perspectives in this field.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), with its high incidence and mortality rate, is one of the most common malignant tumors. Despite recent development of a diagnostic and treatment method, the prognosis of HCC remains poor. Therefore, to provide optimal treatment for each patient with HCC, more precise and effective biomarkers are urgently needed which could facilitate a more detailed individualized decision-making during HCC treatment, including the following; risk assessment, early cancer detection, prediction of treatment or prognostic outcome. In the blood of cancer patients, accumulating evidence about circulating tumor cells and cell-free nucleic acids has suggested their potent clinical utilities as novel biomarker. This concept, so-called "liquid biopsy" is widely known as an alternative approach to cancer tissue biopsy. This method might facilitate a more sensitive diagnosis and better decision-making by obtaining genetic and epigenetic aberrations that are closely associated with cancer initiation and progression. In this article, we review recent developments based on the available literature on both circulating tumor cells and cell-free nucleic acids in cancer patients, especially focusing on Hepatocellular carcinoma.

AIM To evaluate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography(CT) volumetry for discriminating the fibrosis stage in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).METHODS A total of 38 NAFLD patients were enrolled. On the basis of CT imaging, the volumes of total, left lateral segment(LLS), left medial segment, caudate lobe, and right lobe(RL) of the liver were calculated with a dedicated liver application. The relationship between the volume percentage of each area and fibrosis stage was analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. A receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis was performed to determine the accuracy of CT volumetry for discriminating fibrosis *** The volume percentages of the caudate lobe and the LLS significantly increased with the fibrosis stage(r = 0.815, P < 0.001; and r = 0.465, P = 0.003, respectively). Contrarily, the volume percentage of the RL significantly decreased with fibrosis stage(r =-0.563, P < 0.001). The volume percentage of the caudate lobe had the best diagnostic accuracy for staging fibrosis, and the area under the ROC curve values for discriminating fibrosis stage were as follows: ≥ F1, 0.896; ≥ F2, 0.929; ≥ F3, 0.955; and ≥ F4, 0.923. The best cut-off for advanced fibrosis(F3-F4) was 4.789%, 85.7% sensitivity and 94.1% *** The volume percentage of the caudate lobe calculated by CT volumetry is a useful diagnostic parameter for staging fibrosis in NAFLD patients.
