Water-assisted self-sustained burning of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes for scalable transistor fabrication

Although aligned arrays of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) are promising for use in next-generation electronics owing to their ultrathin bodies and ideal electrical properties, even a small portion of metallic (m-) counterparts causes excessive leakage in field-effect transistors (FETs). To fully exploit the benefits of s-SWNTs for use in large-scale systems, it is necessary to completely eliminate m-SWNTs from as-grown SWNT arrays and thereby obtain purely semiconducting large-area arrays, wherein numerous FETs can be flexibly built. In this study, we performed electrical burning of m-SWNTs assisted by water vapor and polymer coating to eliminate m-SWNTs over a long length for the scalable fabrication of transistors from the remaining s-SWNT arrays. During the electrical-breakdown process, the combination of water vapor and the polymer coating significantly enhanced the burning of the SWNTs, resulting in a self-sustained reaction along the nanotube axis. We found that m-SWNT segments partially remaining on the anode side resulted from one-way burning from the initial breakdown position, where Joule-heating-induced oxidation first occurred. The s-SWNT-enriched arrays obtained were used to fabricate multiple FETs with a high on-off current ratio. The results indicate the advantages of this approach over conventional electrical breakdown for the large-scale purification of s-SWNTs.

Exploring the hepatitis C virus genome using single molecule realtime sequencing

Single molecular real-time(SMRT)sequencing,also called third-generation sequencing,is a novel sequencing technique capable of generating extremely long contiguous sequence *** conventional short-read sequencing cannot evaluate the linkage of nucleotide substitutions distant from one another,SMRT sequencing can directly demonstrate linkage of nucleotide changes over a span of more than 20 kbp,and thus can be applied to directly examine the haplotypes of viruses or bacteria whose genome structures are changing in real *** addition,an error correction method(circular consensus sequencing)has been established and repeated sequencing of a single-molecule DNA template can result in extremely high *** advantages of long read sequencing enable accurate determination of the haplotypes of individual viral *** sequencing has been applied in various studies of viral genomes including determination of the full-length contiguous genome sequence of hepatitis C virus(HCV),targeted deep sequencing of the HCV NS5A gene,and assessment of heterogeneity among viral ***,the emergence of multi-drug resistant HCV viruses has become a significant clinical issue and has been also demonstrated using SMRT *** this review,we introduce the novel third-generation PacBio RSII/Sequel systems,compare them with conventional next-generation sequencers,and summarize previous studies in which SMRT sequencing technology has been applied for HCV genome *** also refer to another long-read sequencing platform,nanopore sequencing technology,and discuss the advantages,limitations and future perspectives in using these thirdgeneration sequencers for HCV genome analysis.

Psychophysical Neuroeconomics of Decision Making: Nonlinear Time Perception Commonly Explains Anomalies in Temporal and Probability Discounting

Anomalies in decision over time (e.g., “hyperbolic time discounting”) and under risk (e.g., Allais paradox and hyperbolic probability discounting) have been attracting attention in behavioral and neuroeconomics. We have proposed that psychophysical time commonly explains anomalies in both decisions (Takahashi, 2011, Physica A;Takahashi et al., 2012, J Behav Econ & Finance). By adopting the q-exponential time and probability discounting models, our psychophysical and behavioral economic experiment confirmed that nonlinear distortion of psychophysical time is a common cause of the anomalies in decision both over time and under risk (i.e., intertemporal choice and decision under risk). Implications for psychophysical neuroeconomics and econophysics are discussed.

Formation mechanism of extension fractures induced by excavation of a gallery in soft sedimentary rock,Horonobe area,Northern Japan

This paper focuses on the formation mechanism of fractures induced by excavation of a gallery in soft sedimentary rocks in the Horonobe area of Japan. Detailed fracture mapping of the gallery indicates that the fractures consist of both pre-existing shear fractures and excavation damaged zone （EDZ） fractures. EDZ fractures correspond to weak planes associated with bedding planes or transgranular cracks. The EDZ fractures terminate against pre-existing shear fractures. Therefore, even for excavations in soft sedimentary rocks, formation of the EDZ fractures are controlled by pre-existing fractures and earlier weak planes.

Effect of nitrogen addition on DOC leaching and chemical exchanges on canopy leaves in Guangdong Province, China

The impact of nitrogen(N)deposition on dissolved organic carbon(DOC)fractions in throughfall is not well *** performed a laboratory experiment and compared DOC leaching from canopy leaves after dipping leaves in pure water(control)and NH4NO3 solution(N-treatment)for 18 *** changes of DOC,NH4^+,NO3^-,SO4^2-,K^+,Mg^2+,Ca^2+and H^+contents after dipping leaves were determined by comparing solutions with and without *** recorded no differences of DOC leaching between control and N-treatment,implying that N deposition had minor impacts on canopy DOC *** confirmed that previous experiments testing the effects of N addition on DOC dynamics without considering the effects of the canopy reaction successfully described the real *** also confirmed the previously-reported canopy exchange process in spite of a high background N deposition at our study site.N-treatment significantly increased base cation leaching,especially K^+,and the increase was positively correlated with foliar NH4?*** leaching of H^+and SO4^2-was not affected by the N-treatment.

Determination of persistent organic pollutants by gas chromatography/laser multiphoton ionization/time-of-flight mass spectrometry

An authentic mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls was measured using a short wide-bore capillary column for the group separation of major components present in an actual sample of Kanechlor. The limits of detection were improved by ca. 2 fold in comparison with those obtained using a conventional capillary column, since the retention time was reduced and the amount of analytes introduced into the mass spectrometer per unit time could be increased. On the other hand, surface-water and sediment samples containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） were collected from the river located in the vicinity of a waste water treatment plant. Even acenaphthylene, a minor component of the mixture could be measured for the sediment sample, and the concentra- tions were determined for several heavy PAHs. As demonstrated, a technique involving laser multiphoton ionization/time-of-flight mass spectrometry was useful as a sensitive and selective analytical tool for the trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants in an environmental sample.

Ice accretion is the phenomenon that super-cooled water droplets impinge and accrete on a body. It is well known that ice accretion on blades and airfoils leads to performance degradation and severe accidents. For this reason, experimental investigations have been carried out using flight tests or icing tunnels. However, it is too expensive, dangerous, and difficult to set actual icing conditions. Hence, computational fluid dynamics is useful to predict ice accretion. A rotor blade is one of jet engine components where ice accretes. Therefore, the authors focus on the ice accretion on a rotor blade in this study. Three-dimensional icing phenomena on the rotor blade of a commercial axial blower are computed here, and ice accretion on the rotor blade is numerically investigated.

Testing potassium limitation on soil microbial activity in a sub-tropical forest

Because potassium(K)is a rock-derived essential element that can be depleted in highly-weathered tropical soils,K availability may limit some portion of soil microbial activity in tropical forest *** this paper we tested if K limits microbial activity in the condition of sufficient labile C *** incubation experiment was performed using surface soil samples(0–10 cm depth)obtained from four permanent ecological research plots in a natural sub-tropical forest in southern *** samples were taken in September *** soil respiration rates and microbial biomass were measured after the addition of glucose(both D and L)with and without K(potassium chloride).We did not observe any effects of K addition on soil microbial respiration,suggesting that K does not limit the microbial activity in the condition of sufficient labile C *** lack of microbial response to added K can be attributed to the high mobility of K in forest ecosystems,which may have provided sufficient K to microbes in our soil samples(already provided at the beginning of the incubation).However,at the present stage,we cannot conclude that K is not a limiting factor of soil microbial activity in other tropical forest ecosystems because of the heterogeneity of tropical forest ecosystems and few *** hypothesis needs to be tested in larger numbers of tropical forests.

Effect of Partially Substituting Ca with Mischmetal on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Extruded Mg-Al-Ca-Mn-Based Alloys

Mg-2Al-1.2Ca-0.2Mn(at%)-based alloys with Ce-rich mischmetal(MM) substitution of 0–0.6 at% for Ca were hot extruded at 400 °C. The effect of MM substitution on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the extruded alloys was investigated. The as-cast Mg-2Al-1.2Ca-0.2Mn alloy is mainly composed of a-Mg, Mg_2Ca and(Mg,Al)_2Ca phases and Al_8Mn_5 precipitates, whereas the substitution of MM brings about the formation of Al_(11)MM_3, Al_2MM phases and Al_(10)MM_2Mn_7 particles with the absence of (Mg,Al)_2Ca phase. The volume fraction of MM-containing phases increases with increasing MM contents. All of the extruded alloys exhibit bimodal microstructure comprising fine dynamically recrystallized grains with almost random orientation and coarse deformed grains with strong basal texture. Dense nanosized planar Al_2Ca and spherical Al–Mn phases precipitate inside the deformed grains. High tensile yield strengths of~ 350 MPa and moderate elongations to failure of >12% are obtained in all extruded alloys; the MM substitution induces negligible difference in the tensile properties at ambient temperature, while the highest MM substitution improves the strength at 180 °C due to the better thermal stability of the fragmented MM-containing phases.
