Aerodynamic Sound Radiated from Longitudinal and Transverse Vortex Systems Generated around the Leading Edge of Delta Wings

Flow around the front pillar of an automobile is typical of a flow field with separated and reattached flow by a vortex system. It is known that the vortex system causes the greatest aerodynamic sound around a vehicle. The objective of the present study is to clarify the relationship between vortical structures and aerodynamic sound by the vortex system generated around the front pillar. The vortex system consists of the longitudinal and the transverse system. The characteristics of the longitudinal vortex system were investigated in comparison with the transverse one. Two vortex systems were reproduced by three-dimensional delta wings. The flow visualization experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) captured well the characteristics of the flow structure of the two vortex systems. These results showed that the longitudinal with the rotating axis along mean flow direction had cone-shaped configuration whereas the transverse with the rotating axis vertical to mean flow direction had elliptic one. Increasing the tip angles of the wings from 40 to 140 degrees, there first exists the longitudinal vortex system less than 110 degrees, with the transition region ranging from 110 to 120 degrees, and finally over 120 degrees the transverse appears. The characteristics of aerodynamic sound radiated from the two vortex systems were investigated in low Mach numbers, high Reynolds number turbulent flows in the lownoise wind tunnel. As a result, it was found that the aerodynamic sound radiated from both the longitudinal and the transverse vortex system was proportional to the fifth from sixth power of mean flow velocity, and that the longitudinal vortex generated the aerodynamic sound larger than the transverse.

The <i>q</i>-Exponential Probability Discounting of Gain and Loss

Probability discounting is defined as the devaluation of outcomes as the probability of receiving or paying those decreases. A q-exponential probability discounting model based on Tsallis’ statistics has been proposed in econophysics (Takahashi, 2007, Physica A). We examined (a) fitness of the models to behavioral data of probability discounting of both gain and loss;and (b) relationships between parameters in the q-exponential probability discounting model across gain and loss. Our results demonstrated that, for both gain and loss, the q-exponential model better fits the behavioral data than exponential and hyperbolic functions, and there is the sign effect in q-exponential probability discounting. Relationships between Kahneman-Tversky’s prospect theory in behavioral economics and the q-exponential probability discounting are high-lightened.

Analysis of the Alkane Hydroxylase Gene and Long-Chain Cyclic Alkane Degradation in <i>Rhodococcus</i>

To characterize the long-chain cyclic alkane (c-alkane) degradation of bacteria in Rhodococcus, we analyzed the relationship between the alkane hydroxylase gene (alkB) and long-chain c-alkane degradation in 19 species. Eleven strains which were isolated from nature using long-chain c-alkane as a substrate were identified as R. erythropolisc, and all were shown to carry the alkB [alkB R2 type]. This gene type was also carried by two other species, R. rhodochrous and R. baikonurensis. In total, 17 species of the genus Rhodococcus carried alkB, but the gene types differed from each other. The two species R. rhodnii and R. coprophilus did not carry alkB, and their long-chain c-alkane degradation levels were low.

An Experimental Comparison of Quantum Decision Theoretical Models of Intertemporal Choice for Gain and Loss

In mathematical physics and psychology, “quantum decision theory” has been proposed to explain anomalies in human decision-making. One of such quantum models has been proposed to explain time inconsistency in human decision over time. In this study, we conducted a behavioral experiment to examine which quantum decision models best account for human intertemporal choice. We observed that a q-exponential model developed in Tsallis’ thermodynamics (based on Takahashi’s (2005) nonlinear time perception theory) best fit human behavioral data for both gain and loss, among other quantum decision models.

New scoring system in assessment of Hoffa's fat pad synovitis: A comparative study with established scoring systems

AIM To investigate the reliability of the established and new scoring methods for Hoffa's fat pad synovitis using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).METHODS A total of 139 knees of 115 patients who underwent MRI of the knee with and without gadolinium contrast were enrolled in this study. Proton density(PD)-weighted, PD-weighted fat-suppressed(PD-FS), and postcontrast T1-weighted fat-suppressed(T1CE) images were used for evaluation. Using contrast and noncontrast images, our grading method for synovitis was performed to measure synovial thickness and signal intensity changes of the fat pad [Synovial membrane(SM) score], which was compared with the established methods,including MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score(MOAKS), parapatellar synovitis score,Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score(WORMS), and suprapatellar effusion diameter. Intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC) for intra and interobserver reproducibility and Spearman correlation coefficients(r) were calculated for the parapatellar synovitis score and each scoring *** All of the scores presented substantial to almost perfect intrareliability. Among three readers, effusion diameter had substantial to almost perfect interreliability(ICC = 0.68-0.81) and WORMS had substantial interreliability(ICC = 0.61-0.70).For two out of three readers, there was substantial interreliability for the thickness score in T1CE(ICC = 0.55-0.69), SM scores in T1CE(ICC = 0.56-0.78)and PD-FS(ICC = 0.51-0.79), and parapatellar synovitis score in T1CE(ICC =0.53-0.72). The parapatellar synovitis score was significantly correlated with the thickness score in T1CE(r = 0.70) and the SM score in T1CE(r = 0.81) and PD-FS(r = 0.65).CONCLUSION The newly proposed quantitative thickness score on T1CE and the semiquantitative SM score on T1CE and PD-FS can be useful for Hoffa's fat pad synovitis.

Molecular Evolution of the Cytochrome b Gene in Geographically Isolated Populations of Oryzias Latipes

The mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was isolated from the caudal fin of Oryzias latipes and PCR was undertaken to determine phylogeny. The nucleotide sequence of the complete cytochrome b gene including the 5＇ and 3＇ ends was 1,143 base pairs （bp） and 1,137 bp encoding 380 and 378 amino acids in the K-11 strain and HS strain, respectively. In addition, higher substitutions both in base and amino acid residues occurred more frequently between the former control （Hd-rR strain） and HS strains than the K-I 1 strain. Approximately similar values in polymorphism, as assessed by restriction endonuclease digestion, were detected when utilizing 20 different enzymes. Therefore, the evolutionary processes were unlikely to involve common ancestors, especially between the K-11 strain and HS strains, in O. latipes populations in Japan. The sequence had been deposited in GenBank Data Base under accession number AB480878 （K-I I strain） and AB480879 （HS strain）.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct: A case report

Neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC) originating from the gastrointestinal hepatobiliary-pancreas is a rare, invasive, and progressive disease, for which the prognosis is extremely poor. The patient was a 72-year-old man referred with complaints of jaundice. He was diagnosed with middle extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(cT 4N1M0, c Stage Ⅳ). He underwent a right hepatectomy combined with extrahepatic bile duct and portal vein resection after percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization. Microscopic examination showed a large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma according to the WHO criteria for the clinicopathologic classification of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Currently, the patient is receiving combination chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide for postoperative multiple liver metastases. Although NEC is difficult to diagnose preoperatively, it should be considered an uncommon alternative diagnosis.

Characterization of Orchard Fields Based on Soil Fertility Index (SOFIX)

Soil samples from 139 agricultural orchard fields (apple, grape, tea, and others) were analyzed using the soil fertility index. From these samples, an orchard field database was constructed and the soil properties between orchard, upland, and paddy fields were compared. The average value of bacterial biomass in the orchard fields was 7.4 × 108 cells/g-soil, ranging from not detected (lower than 6.6 × 106 cells/g-soil) to 7.7 × 109 cells/g-soil. The average values of total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK), were 24,000 mg/kg (2670 to 128,100 mg/kg), 1460 mg/kg (133 to 6400 mg/kg), 1030 mg/kg (142 to 5362 mg/kg), and 5370 mg/kg (1214 to 18,155 mg/kg), respectively. The C/N and C/P ratios were 19 (3 to 85) and 27 (2 to 101), respectively. Soil properties of the orchard fields were compared with those of the upland and the paddy fields. The average value of bacterial biomass in the orchard fields was almost the same as that in the upland fields (8.0 × 108 cells/g-soil), but the number was lower than that in the paddy fields (12.9 × 108 cells/g-soil). The average values of TC and TN in the orchard fields fell between those in the upland fields (TC: 33,120 mg/kg, TN: 2010 mg/kg) and the paddy fields (TC: 15,420 mg/kg, TN: 1080
