Piliostigma thonningii (Fabaceae) is a versatile medicinal plant used as a traditional remedy,especially in African *** the present study,ethyl acetate,methanolic and water extracts of different parts of (fruits,leaves,stem barks) *** were evaluated for their bioactive contents,enzyme inhibitory,antioxidant and antimicrobial *** potentials were also displayed in various methods like phosphomolybdenum assay (0.79–5.94 mmol tE/g),radical scavenging assays (DPPH:20.39–471.28 mg tE/g;ABtS:42.43–654.14 mg tE/g);reducing assays (CUPRAC:102.98–1207.42 mg tE/g;FRAP:45.30–656.25 mg tE/g) and metal chelating activity (2.55–22.32 mg EDtAE/g).In particular,the methanolic and water extracts showed better antioxidant *** for a few,the extracts were also found to act as inhibitors of enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (2.35–5.35 mg GALAE/g),butyrylcholinesterase (0.83–13.80 mg GALAE/g),tyrosinase (4.03–143.86 mg KAE/g),amylase (0.21–1.39 mmol ACAE/g) and glucosidase (3.52–7.13 mmol ACAE/g).Additionally,all the tested extracts possessed significant antibacterial (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration:0.11–0.61 mg/ml) and antifungal (MIC and minimum fungicidal concentration:0.04–0.61 mg/ml) ***,the data garnered from the present study provides a bright scope for the advanced investigation on this particular plant possessing pharmacologically active traits.

Background: Modifications in social habits together with the increase of emigration have contributed not only to increased dermatophytoses but also to an altered etiology. During the last few years, Braga has suffered a radical change from a rural to a cosmopolitan life-style. Methods: A statistical study of dermatophytoses and the etiology of their causative agents was performed by a retrospective survey carried out among patients of Hospital de S o Marcos, Braga, Portugal, from 1983- 2002. In this study, a total of 10- 003 patients were analyzed. Results: Over this period the frequency of dermatophytoses, as defined by the recovery of a dermatophyte in culture, was found to be 23.6% , whereas nondermatophytic infections accounted for 7.0% . Analysis of the clinical form s and the isolated fungi supports that the dermatophyte species have a predilection for certain body areas (P ≤ 0.01). Age is a very important factor regarding the occurrence of dermatophytoses (P ≤ 0.0001), with a correlation between increasing age and infection, positive for trichophyton rubrum and negative for Microsporum canis. Overall the gender of the patients is not an association factor for the development of dermatophytoses; however, significant differences were detected in the distribution of some etiologic agents (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: the results showed the main etiologic agent of dermatophytoses to be trichophyton rubrum (37.4% ). Moreover, dermatophytoses are both decreasing and showing a new profile in Braga, and a pronounced decrease of trichophyton megninii was observed throughout the study.

this study is a part of the research in monitoring systems of environmental impacts in coastal re-gions in order to develop trophic dynamic models to be used in the aquatic systems management. Meteorological influences in the variability of the nutrients, larvae concentration, dissolved oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll a were investigated in a region where upwelling occurs. Extreme seasonal variations of reanalysis, QuikSCAt, and surface stations from the southeast coast of Brazil, as well as, surface seawater data collected in Anjos Bay, Arraial do Cabo city northeast of Rio de Janeiro state, are analyzed. Seasonality and correlations are applied to verify the relationship between them, considering minimum values of sea surface temperature (SSt) and sea level variation and maximum values of the other variables. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarquical Cluster Analysis (HCA) are applied to verify spatial and temporal variances and to describe more clearly the structure of the local ecosystem. the seasonality of northeasterly extreme wind stress follows the seasonal pattern expected for the study area with peaks during spring. the SSt has a well-defined seasonal pattern with maximum peaks from February to July and minimum peaks from September to January. Chlorophyll a presents higher seasonal peak in February, being in accordance with DO;both are related to the maximum primary productivity. Correlations of the physical variables (local and remote) with nutrients and larvae present a relatively similar pattern around 0.5, showing these variables have a reasonable interaction with the meteorological forcing. PCA shows a strong variability in pressure data around 0.9, which may be related to the seasonal variations in South Atlantic subtropical anticyclone (SASA) and consequently to the occurrence of upwelling in the region. HCA shows the twenty-five parameters into two big clusters with predominance of biotic variables in one side and abiotic ones at the other. t

this study aimed to assess the effect of intracellular prolactin (ICPRL) and hyperprolactinemia on cell replication, using an immunohistochemical (IHC) technique for Ki-67 and Mcm-2, and angiogenesis, using IHC for endoglin CD-105, in central nervous system (CNS) tumors. this cross-sectional study included 79 cases of surgically excised primary CNS tumors of neuroepithelial origin (41.8% of all cases: 10.2% astrocytomas, 24% glioblastomas and 7.6% oligodendrogliomas) and meningeal origin (58.2% of all cases). Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes were calculated as a percentage of marked cells. the medians for Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes were significantly lower in meningiomas than in glioblastomas (p S = 0.60) replication markers. there were no significant differences in vascular density between the different histological types. Immunohistochemistry for ICPRL was positive in 45.6% of the tumors. Serum prolactin (PRL) was elevated in 30.6% of the cases. Multiple regression analysis revealed no important correlation of ICPRL and serum PRL on Ki-67 and Mcm-2 indexes or vascular density. the analysis of the combined impact of ICPRL and serum PRL variables revealed a trend towards an increase in microvessel density in tumor tissue and a significant increase in cell replication markers (p = 0.009 for Ki-67 and p = 0.05 for Mcm-2). PRL in tumor tissue may be one of the modulating factors of cell proliferation in the CNS.

Objective: to evaluate the antibacterial activity and neuroprotective capacity of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of tarenaya spinosa(t. spinosa) as well as to determine and quantify some of its polyphenols by high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection(HPLC-DAD). Methods: the bacterial Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, grown in Heart Agar Infusion, were tested. the drugs gentamicin, norfloxacin and imipenem were used to evaluate the modulating or antagonistic capacity of the t. spinosa extracts. the extract was analysed by HPLC-DAD to determine the main phenolic compounds. For the cell viability tests, individual heads of the Nauphoeta cinerea arthropod model were removed, homogenized in trifluoromethyl ketone and centrifuged afterwards. Subsequently, 20 μL of NaN O2 were added to the biological material, except in the control group, to evaluate the protection capacity of the extracts. the homogenate of the insect heads was incubated for 2 h in tubes containing tetrazolium bromide. Results: HPLC-DAD demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of t. spinosa presented caffeic acid as the major compound. the ethanolic extract also showed neuroprotective effects at concentrations ≥ 10 μg/mL, while aqueous extract was shown to have a protective effect only at the concentration of 100 μg/mL. the aqueous extract demonstrated a clinically relevant antibacterial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus multidrug resistant strain-MDR, with MIC 512 μg/m L. However, when the extracts were associated with gentamicin and imipenem, a synergism was detected against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli MDR strains. Conclusions: Although it does not present an antibacterial action, the extracts of t. spinosa can be used in the pharmaceutical industries since its extracts show modulating action of drugs. Besides, these natural products have neuroprotective capacity.

Background:Ruminants rely upon a complex community of microbes in their rumen to convert host-indigestible feed into ***,little is known about the association between the rumen microbiota and feed efficiency traits in Nellore(Bos indicus)cattle,a breed of major economic importance to the global beef ***,we compare the composition of the bacterial,archaeal and fungal communities in the rumen of Nellore steers with high and low feed efficiency(FE)phenotypes,as measured by residual feed intake(RFI).Results:the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio was significantly higher(Ptive-RFI steers(p-RFI,low feed efficiency)than in negative-RFI(n-RFI,high feed efficiency)*** differences in bacterial composition from steers with high and low FE were mainly associated with members of the families Lachnospiraceae,Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae,as well as the genus *** community richness was lower(Pthan in n-RFI steers and the genus Methanobrevibacter was either increased or exclusive of p-RFI *** fungal genus Buwchfawromyces was more abundant in the rumen solid fraction of n-RFI steers(Pt OtU belonging to the genus Piromyces was also increased in the rumen microbiota of highefficiency ***,analysis of rumen fermentation variables and functional predictions indicated similar metabolic outputs for the microbiota of distinct FE ***:Our results demonstrate that differences in the ruminal microbiota of high and low FE Nellore steers comprise specific taxa from the bacterial,archaeal and fungal *** OtUs belonging to the genus Piromyces were identified in animals showing high feed efficiency,whereas among archaea,Methanobrevibacter was associated with steers classified as *** identification of specific RFI-associated microorganisms in Nellore steers could guide further studies targeting the isolation and functional characterization

Objective: to evaluate gene polymorphisms and their association with susceptibility to ***: A retrospective case-control study was performed with 262 subjects,comprising 78 dengue fever(DF) patients, 49 dengue hemorrhagic fever(DHF) patients and 135 healthy controls. Genotypic and allelic profiles were identified using polymerase chain reaction based in real time and amplification-refractory mutation ***: We observed a protective association of IL-10(-819 C/t) C allele(P = 0.028,OR = 0.56, CI = 0.34–0.91) against DHF, while the C/t(P = 0.047, OR = 2.10,CI = 1.01–4.38) and t/t(P = 0.008, OR = 3.82, CI = 1.38–10.59) genotypes were associated with DHF and DF, respectively. the dominant model tNFA-308 GA + AA(P = 0.043, OR = 0.45, CI = 0.20–1.00) genotypes were found to have protective effect against dengue infection. A protective association among the IFNG(+874 A/t) A/t genotype against DF(P = 0.02, OR = 0.46, CI = 0.24–0.89) and DHF(P = 0.034,OR = 0.43, CI = 0.19–0.95) was observed. When the studied single-nucleotide polymorphism was analyzed in combination, the combination GtA(P = 0.022, OR = 2.95,CI = 1.18–7.41) was statistically significantly associated with susceptibility to DF and the combination GCt(P = 0.035, OR = 0.28, CI = 0.08–0.90) with protection against the development of ***: this research identifies the association of the IFNG(+874 A/t), tNFA(-308 G/A), IL-10(-819 C/t) genotypes as a factor for protection, susceptibility and severity to dengue.
