Purpose: Non-a.coholic fa.ty liver (Na.L) is comorbid to obesity, meta.olic syndrome a.d type 2 dia.etes mellitus (T2DM). It is unclea. whether Na.LD constitutes a.direct risk fa.tor for ma.rova.cula. disea.e in T2DM. This study a.med a. revisiting the ca.diometa.olic tra.ts linked to Na.L a.d micro-/ ma.rova.cula. complica.ions in a.biethnic Ca.ca.ia. a.d a.rica. cohort. Methods: Cross-sectiona. a.a.ysis of 568 of T2DM pa.ients (515 Ca.ca.ia.s;53 a.rica.s) in whom the presence of Na.L wa. identified by ultra.onogra.hy a.d the ca.diometa.olic phenotype wa. exha.stively cha.a.terized, including ca.bohydra.e homeosta.is, comprehensive lipidogra. including Lp(a., cumula.ive exposure to hyperglycemia. a.d preva.ent micro/ma.rova.cula. complica.ions. Results: FL wa. present in 73% of Ca.ca.ia.s a.d 36% of a.rica.s (p a.herogenic dyslipidemic (Ca.ca.ia.s) a.d ha. lower lipoprotein(a. (a.rica.s). a.l-ca.se ma.roa.giopa.hy, ischemic hea.t disea.e or stroke did not significa.tly differ between FL+ a.d FL− in both groups. a.ma.ked reduction in dia.etic retinopa.hy (DR), ocula. hypertonia.a.d ca.a.a.ts were found in FL+ of the two ethnicities. In FL+ Ca.ca.ia.s, rela.ive risk of DR wa. −38%, ca.a.a.ts −35%, a.d ocula. hypertonia.−42%. In FL+ a.rica.s, risk of overa.l microa.giopa.hy wa. −66% a.d tha. of DR −86%. Conclusions: a. inverse a.socia.ion wa. observed between Na.L a.d the presence of dia.etic retinopa.hy, ca.a.a.t a.d ocula. hypertonia.
