In-situ gas contents of a multi-section coal seam in Sydney basin for coal and gas outburst management

The gas content is crucial for evaluating coal and gas outburst potential in underground coal mining. This study focuses on investigating the in-situ coal seam gas content and gas sorption capacity in a representative coal seam with multiple sections (A1, A2, and A3) in the Sydney basin, where the CO_(2) composition exceeds 90%. The fast direct desorption method and associated devices were described in detail and employed to measure the in-situ gas components (Q_(1), Q_(2), and Q_(3)) of the coal seam. The results show that in-situ total gas content (Q_(T)) ranges from 9.48 m^(3)/t for the A2 section to 14.80 m^(3)/t for the A3 section, surpassing the Level 2 outburst threshold limit value, thereby necessitating gas drainage measures. Among the gas components, Q_(2) demonstrates the highest contribution to Q_(T), ranging between 55% and 70%. Furthermore, high-pressure isothermal gas sorption experiments were conducted on coal samples from each seam section to explore their gas sorption capacity. The Langmuir model accurately characterizes CO_(2) sorption behavior, with ft coefcients (R^(2)) greater than 0.99. Strong positive correlations are observed between in-situ gas content and Langmuir volume, as well as between residual gas content (Q_(3)) and sorption hysteresis. Notably, the A3 seam section is proved to have a higher outburst propensity due to its higher Q_(1) and Q_(2) gas contents, lower sorption hysteresis, and reduced coal toughness f value. The insights derived from the study can contribute to the development of efective gas management strategies and enhance the safety and efciency of coal mining operations.

Objective: To characterise a novel multifunctional pharmaceutical excipient and investigate its ef ect on paracetamol release from tablets prepared by direct ***: The excipient was prepared by co-processing gelatinized maize starch with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and microcrystalline cellulose in a ratio of 2:1:1, dried and pulverized into powder. The excipient formulated was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dif erential scanning calorimetry. The excipient was used to prepare batches of tablets by direct compression with drug-excipient ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. Parameters evaluated on tablets include crushing strength, friability and in vitro dissolution studies. Results: Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed a crystalline excipient while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed no interaction between the excipient and paracetamol. Tablets from all the batches gave average crushing strength values between 3.47 and 4.88 kp. The 1:1 and 1:2 tablet batches were comparable to each other while 1:3 and 1:4 were also comparable to one another in their dissolution proi les. The dissolution parameters of the 1:4 batch was faster with- m∞(90.5%), t50%(3.5 min), t70%(11.6 min) while that of ratio 1:1 was the least with- m∞(48.6%), m5min(23.8%). Their release kinetics followed a KorsmeyerPeppas model with a super case-II transport ***: The drug-excipient ratios of 1:3 and 1:4 gave pharmaceutically acceptable tablets that met the British Pharmacopoeia specii cations. The t50% value of the 1:4 batch of tablets may i nd its usefulness in formulating drugs for which a fast onset of action is desired.

Background: Etomidate is the standard induction agent used during rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in the emergency department (ED). Etomidate shortages require providers to utilize alternative agents. The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and procedural outcomes of propofol and etomidate for RSI in the ED. methods: This was a retrospective chart review of adult patients in the ED who received propofol or etomidate for induction during RSI. The main endpoint was hypotension, defined as a systolic blood pressure mmHg or diastolic blood pressure mmHg, within the first hour of intubation. Time to intubation, intensive care unit length of stay, hospital length of stay, and in-hospital mortality were also evaluated. Results: Two hundred and seventy five patient charts were reviewed. Of the 98 patients included, 43 patients received propofol and 55 patients received etomidate. Propofol was associated with an increased incidence of hypotension within the first hour of intubation (65.1% vs. 25.5%, p me to intubation: ≤5 minutes (51.2% vs. 34.6%, p = 0.83). The mortality rate was 11.6% in the propofol group and 27.3% in the etomidate group (p = 0.004). There was no difference in hospital or intensive care unit length of stay between the propofol and etomidate groups (7.7 vs. 9.2 days, p = 0.23;4.2 vs. 6.3 days, p = 0.31). Conclusion: Propofol was a safe and procedurally effective induction agent for RSI. Compared to etomidate, it was associated with an increased rate of hypotension within the first hour of intubation, with no difference in the percent of patients that required an intervention.

This research evaluated the suitability of stone dust in the design and production of High Perfor-mance Concrete (HPC). HPC mix was designed, tested, costed and a comparison of concrete classes used in the market (Class 25, 30 and 35) done using Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA). The cost benefit was analyzed using Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Net Present Value (NPV). Laboratory tests established the properties concrete obtained from the design mix. Compressive strength, slump, and modulus of elasticity were tested and analyzed. Structural analysis using BS 8110 was done for a 10 storey office building to establish the structural member sizes. members obtained from concrete Classes 25, 30, 35 and the new compressive strengths from HPC (Class 80) were obtained and compared. Analysis was done for structural members’ sizes and area freed as a result of de-signing with HPC as well as the steel reinforcement used. To justify the initial cost of HPC if ado- pted, the Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) was used to estimate increased costs versus income resulting from increased let table space created. The minimum class of concrete used in design was limited to Class 25 N/mm2. The research shows that it is possible to manufacture high strength concrete using locally available stone dust. The stone dust sampled from mlolongo quarries achieved a characteristic strength of 86.7 N/mm2 at a water cement ratio of 0.32. With the results structural analysis of a 10 storey office structures with columns spaced at 8 meters center to center was de-signed using the four classes and results compared. There was a reduction of columns from 1.2 m wide to 0.65 m wide (over 45%) when concrete class changes from Class 25 to Class 80 creating over 3% of the total space area per floor. Cost benefit analysis using Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) presented business case for the use of HPC.
