Yield and Profit from New and Old Wheat Varieties Using Certified and Farmer-Saved Seeds

Wheat is a strategic crop for food security in Pakistan with predominance of smallholder farmers. Farmer-saved seed （FSS） is used nearly by 75% of farmers for wheat production. Frequent variety or seed replacement is uncommon even among large-scale farmers, and certified seed （CS） is mostly bought to verify the value of new varieties. Replacing old and obsolete varieties by new high yielding disease resistant varieties is key to transferring new genetic gains to farmers. For the first time in Pakistan, on-farm factorial experiments involving seven new and five old wheat varieties and their corresponding CS and FSS were conducted. A total of 49 farmers representing major wheat cropping patterns throughout the country participated in these trials in the 2014 and 2015 wheat growing seasons. Analysis of variance revealed that there was highly significant difference between wheat varieties and between seed classes. New variety ＋ CS gave 33.8% more grain yield as well as higher marginal return over farmers＇ variety ＋ FSS. Grain yield and returns from new variety ＋ FSS and farmers＇ variety ＋ CS were at par. Scientific knowledge generated in this research demonstrated that use of CS ＆new wheat varieties is best option, while growing new varieties with FSS is a second choice for the advantages accruing from their built-in genetic traits of economic importance over growing CS of old and obsolete varieties. Having more flexible seed system will help accelerate the delivery of new genetic gains to farmers＇ fields.

Thickness-dependent monochalcogenide GeSe-based CBRAM for memory and artificial electronic synapses

Inexpensive synthesis of a high-performance Fe3O4-SiO2-TiO2 photocatalyst： Magnetic recovery and reuse

A sol-gel technique has been developed for the synthesis of a magnetite-silica-titania （Fe3O4-SiO2-TiO2） tertiary nanocomposite with improved photocatalytic properties based on the use of inexpensive titania and silica precursors. The exceptional photocatalytic activity of the resulting materials was demonstrated by using them to photocatalyze the degradation of methylene blue solution. The best formulation achieved 98% methylene blue degradation. An interesting feature of the present work was the ability to magnetically separate and reuse the catalyst. The efficiency of the catalyst remained high during two reuses. The synthesized nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, transmission electron micro- scopy （TEM）, Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） spectro- scopy, ultra-violet-visible spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. XRD ana- lysis revealed the formation of multicrystalline systems of cubic magnetite and anatase titania crystals. SEM and TEM characterization revealed well-developed and homo- geneously dispersed particles of size less than 15 nm. FTIR spectra confirmed the chemical interaction of titania and silica. It was further noticed that the optical properties of the prepared materials were dependent on the relative contents of their constituent metal oxides.

Modified Anam-Net Based Lightweight Deep Learning Model for Retinal Vessel Segmentation

The accurate segmentation of retinal vessels is a challenging taskdue to the presence of various pathologies as well as the low-contrast ofthin vessels and non-uniform illumination. In recent years, encoder-decodernetworks have achieved outstanding performance in retinal vessel segmentation at the cost of high computational complexity. To address the aforementioned challenges and to reduce the computational complexity, we proposea lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN)-based encoder-decoderdeep learning model for accurate retinal vessels segmentation. The proposeddeep learning model consists of encoder-decoder architecture along withbottleneck layers that consist of depth-wise squeezing, followed by fullconvolution, and finally depth-wise stretching. The inspiration for the proposed model is taken from the recently developed Anam-Net model, whichwas tested on CT images for COVID-19 identification. For our lightweightmodel, we used a stack of two 3 × 3 convolution layers (without spatialpooling in between) instead of a single 3 × 3 convolution layer as proposedin Anam-Net to increase the receptive field and to reduce the trainableparameters. The proposed method includes fewer filters in all convolutionallayers than the original Anam-Net and does not have an increasing numberof filters for decreasing resolution. These modifications do not compromiseon the segmentation accuracy, but they do make the architecture significantlylighter in terms of the number of trainable parameters and computation *** proposed architecture has comparatively fewer parameters (1.01M) thanAnam-Net (4.47M), U-Net (31.05M), SegNet (29.50M), and most of the otherrecent works. The proposed model does not require any problem-specificpre- or post-processing, nor does it rely on handcrafted features. Refined Anam-Net:Lightweight Deep Learning Model for Improved Segmentation Performance of Optic Cup and Disc for Glaucoma Diagnosis

In this work,we aim to introduce some modifications to the Anam-Net deep neural network(DNN)model for segmenting optic cup(OC)and optic disc(OD)in retinal fundus images to estimate the cup-to-disc ratio(CDR).The CDR is a reliable measure for the early diagnosis of *** this study,we developed a lightweight DNN model for OC and OD segmentation in retinal fundus *** DNN model is based on modifications to Anam-Net,incorporating an anamorphic depth embedding *** reduce computational complexity,we employ a fixed filter size for all convolution layers in the encoder and decoder stages as the network *** modification significantly reduces the number of trainable parameters,making the model lightweight and suitable for resource-constrained *** evaluate the performance of the developed model using two publicly available retinal image databases,namely RIM-ONE and *** results demonstrate promising OC segmentation performance across most standard evaluation metrics while achieving analogous results for OD *** used two retinal fundus image databases named RIM-ONE and Drishti-GS that contained 159 images and 101 retinal images,*** OD segmentation using the RIM-ONE we obtain an f1-score(F1),Jaccard coefficient(JC),and overlapping error(OE)of 0.950,0.9219,and 0.0781,***,for OC segmentation using the same databases,we achieve scores of 0.8481(F1),0.7428(JC),and 0.2572(OE).Based on these experimental results and the significantly lower number of trainable parameters,we conclude that the developed model is highly suitable for the early diagnosis of glaucoma by accurately estimating the CDR.

Parametic Model for Optimization of Battery Capacity and Power Transmitters of On-line Electric Vehicles in Closed/Open Environments

An on-line electric vehicle(OLEV)uses a wireless charging phenomenon,in which power transmitters are installed beneath the road and the OLEV’s battery is charged *** paper deals with the optimization of two key economic and design parameters,i.e.,the size of the battery and the power transmitters allocation.A complete model configuration of the OLEV system,including the vehicle design and power transmitter,is implemented using MATLAB/*** battery’s state of charge(SOC)rises and drops according to the vehicle’s velocity and power collection and *** mixed integer programming(MIP)model is used for cost ***,with the help of the SOC graph and MIP model,the battery size and the number of power transmitters,along with their placements,are *** proposed model is applicable to both closed and open environments as it accepts both regulated and deregulated *** test cases are performed for this *** first test case deals with regulated velocity for which we have applied the KAIST campus OLEV’s velocity along with its 13 kWh battery size and 4 power transmitters,and then applied the suggested solution with the same velocity and route i.e.,8 power transmitters with shorter lengths and reduced battery size(3.25 kWh;one-fourth of the first case).SOC is found within limits at the end of the route,saving$1600 and validating the proposed model in this *** the second test case,we use deregulated velocity and optimize both parameters,using the same approach.
