The soil movement information over time is required for the design of foundations placed in expansive soils. This information is also helpful for the assessment of pre-wetting and controlled wetting mitigation alternatives for expansive soils. Several researchers during the past fifteen years have proposed different methods for the prediction of the soil movements over time. The available methods can be categorized into(i) consolidation theory-based methods,(ii) water content-based methods, and(iii) suction-based methods. In this paper, a state-of-the-art of the prediction methods is succinctly summarized. The methods are critically reviewed in terms of their predictive capacity along with their strengths and limitations. The review highlights the need for prediction methods that are conceptually simple yet efficient for use in conventional engineering practice for different types of expansive soils.

In Bayesian analysis, the maximum entropy prior is commonly used. But in some cases, the maximum entropy prior does not exist or has unpleasant jumps, In this paper, Fisher-information is used to measure the divergence and to derive the unknown prior. To a certain degree, this measure overcomes the shortcomings of the maximum entropy. The Fisher prior aways exists and it is continuous under the general requirements.

AIM To investigate the repeatability of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the in vivo measurement of human cerebral levels of choline-containing compounds(Cho).METHODS Two consecutive scans were carried out in six healthy resting subjects at a magnetic field strength of 1.5 T. On each occasion, neurospectroscopy data were collected from 64 voxels using the same 2 D chemical shift imaging(CSI) sequence. The data were analyzed in the same way, using the same software, to obtain the values for each voxel of the ratio of Cho to creatine. The Wilcoxon related-samples signed-rank test, coefficient of variation(CV), repeatability coefficient(RC), and intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) were used to assess the repeatability. RESULTS The CV ranged from 2.75% to 33.99%, while the minimum RC was 5.68%. There was excellent reproducibility, as judged by significant ICC values, in 26 voxels. Just three voxels showed significant differences according to the Wilcoxon related-samples signed-rank test. CONCLUSION It is therefore concluded that when CSI multivoxel proton neurospectroscopy is used to measure cerebral choline-containing compounds at 1.5 T, the reproducibility is highly acceptable.

Storm-time changes of main plasma parameters in the auroral ionosphere are analyzed for two intense storms occurring on May 15, 1997 and Sept. 25, 1998, with emphasis on their relationship to the solar wind dynamic pressure and the IMFB z component. Strong hard particle precipitation occurred in the initial phase for both storms, associated with high solar wind dynamical pressure. During the recovery phase of the storms, some strong particle precipitation was neither concerned with high solar wind pressure nor southward IMFB z. Severe negative storm effects depicted by electron density depletion appeared in theF-region during the main and recovery phase of both storms, caused by intensive electric field-related strong Joule/frictional heating when IMF was largely southward. The ion temperature behaved similarly inE-andF-region, but the electron temperature did quite different, with a strong increase in the lowerE-region relating to plasma instability excited by strong electric field and a slight decrease in theF-region probably concerning with a cooling process. The field-aligned ion velocity was high and apparently anticorrelated with the northward component of the ion convection velocity.

Patients with cirrhosis have a state of“rebalanced hemostasis”where there is a simultaneous reduction in both qualitative and quantitative properties of procoagulants and anticoagulants,i.e.,platelets,fibrinogen,coagulation factors,protein C,S,and antithrombin and conversely,there is an increase in the levels of von Willebrand factor,endothelial factor VIII,tissue plasminogen activator(t-PA),and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1(PAI-1)(1).Laboratory tests,such as INR,involving these coagulation proteins have been used for the prognostication of patients with cirrhosis/liver failure and have historically been part of several severity scores(2,3).Spontaneous bleeding due to clotting factor deficiencies is less frequent in the absence of mechanical trauma,while thrombosis is not uncommon and may merit anticoagulation therapy(4).However,the management of patients with cirrhosis with abnormalities in the hemostasis system is *** meet this unmet need,the European Association for the Study of the Liver(EASL)developed new guidelines for the prevention and management of bleeding and thrombosis in patients with cirrhosis(5).The bleeding here is referred to mucocutaneous and visceral bleeding events.
