In a study published in Cell,Pozniak et *** the spectrum of the phenotypic cell states of human metastatic melanomas in their tumor microenvironment before and early during immune checkpoint inhibitor(ICI)therapy and identified an enrichment of mesenchymal-like(MES)state melanoma cells in non-responders to ICI.1 These findings offer valuable insights into the factors contributing to the refractoriness of certain melanoma patients to ICI,while also unveiling novel molecular targets that hold promise for improving their treatment outcomes.

Incidental adenocarcinoma in patients undergoing surgery for stricturing Crohn's disease

AIM To evaluate frequency and clinical course of incidental adenocarcinoma in patients with stricturing Crohn's disease(CD).METHODS In this study, consecutive patients, who were operated on for stricturing CD between 1997-2012, were included at an academic tertiary referral center. Demographic data and clinical course were obtained by an institutional database and individual chart review. Besides baseline characteristics, intraoperative findings and CD related history were also recorded. Colorectal cancer was classified and staged according to the Union for International Cancer Control(UICC).RESULTS During the study period 484 patients underwent resections due to stricturing CD. Incidental adenocarcinoma was histologically confirmed in 6(1.2%) patients(4 males, 2 females). Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer had a median age of 43(27-66)years and a median history of CD of 16(7-36) years. Malignant lesions were found in the rectum(n = 4, 66.7%), descending colon(n = 1, 16.7%) and ileocolon(n = 1, 16.7%). According to the UICC classification two patients were stages as?Ⅰ(33.3%), whereas the other patients were classified as stage ⅡA(16.7%), stage ⅢB(16.7%), stage ⅢC(16.7%) and stage Ⅳ(16.7%), respectively. After a median follow-up of 2(0.03-8) years only 1 patient is still *** The frequency of incidental colorectal cancer in patients, who undergo surgery for stenotic CD, is low but associated with poor prognosis. However, surgeons need to be aware about the possibility of malignancy in stricturing CD, especially if localized in the rectum.

Pulsed electrolysis of carbon dioxide by large-scale solid oxide electrolytic cells for intermittent renewable energy storage

CO_(2) electrolysis with solid oxide electrolytic cells(SOECs)using intermittently available renewable energy has potential applications for carbon neutrality and energy *** this study,a pulsed current strategy is used to replicate intermittent energy availability,and the stability and conversion rate of the cyclic operation by a large-scale flat-tube SOEC are *** hundred cycles under pulsed current ranging from -100 to -300 mA/cm^(2) with a total operating time of about 800 h were carried *** results show that after 100 cycles,the cell voltage attenuates by 0.041%/cycle in the high current stage of−300 mA/cm^(2),indicating that the lifetime of the cell can reach up to about 500 *** total CO_(2) conversion rate reached 52%,which is close to the theoretical value of 54.3% at -300 mA/cm^(2),and the calculated efficiency approached 98.2%,assuming heat *** study illustrates the significant advantages of SOEC in efficient electrochemical energy conversion,carbon emission mitigation,and seasonal energy storage.

Apoplastic barriers of Populus×canescens roots in reaction to different cultivation conditions and abiotic stress treatments

Populus is an important tree genus frequently cultivated for economical ***,the high sensitivity of poplars towards water deficit,drought,and salt accumulation significantly affects plant productivity and limits biomass *** cultivation and abiotic stress conditions have been described to significantly induce the formation of apoplastic barriers(Casparian bands and suberin lamellae)in roots of different monocotyledonous crop ***,this study aimed to investigate to which degree the roots of the dicotyledonous gray poplar(Populus×canescens)react to a set of selected cultivation conditions(hydroponics,aeroponics,or soil)and abiotic stress treatments(abscisic acid,oxygen deficiency)because a differing stress response could potentially help in explaining the observed higher stress *** apoplastic barriers of poplar roots cultivated in different environments were analyzed by means of histochemistry and gas chromatography and compared to the available literature on monocotyledonous crop ***,dicotyledonous poplar roots showed only a remarkably low induction or enhancement of apoplastic barriers in response to the different cultivation conditions and abiotic stress *** genetic optimization(e.g.,overexpression of biosynthesis key genes)of the apoplastic barrier development in poplar roots might result in more stress-tolerant cultivars in the future.
