Disaster Journalism in Print Media:Analysis of the Top 10 Hydrogeomorphological Disaster Events in Portugal,1865–2015

Disaster communication guidelines emphasize that journalists should be aware of past major disasters and draw lessons from the coverage of those events.The press is an important source for the evolution of historical disaster and risk research paradigms over time.This study explored the top 10 damaging hydrogeomorphological events in Portugal selected from the disaster database,which includes events that caused human damages(fatalities,injured,missing,evacuated,and displaced)reported over a period of 151years(1865–2015)by the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Notícias(DN).News analysis was guided by the news protocol.The analysis of the news published in DN enabled us to identify textual marks that present interconnections in the journalistic coverage and produce discursive standards for these disasters.The textual marks were associated with the hazard and risk paradigms.The discursive standards of DN did not clearly reflect the ruptures in the hazard paradigms.As a rule,the journalistic reports contributed to the naturalization of disasters and the gap in public understanding of risks,by presenting an approach focused on relief actions—ignoring social issues,vulnerability,and population resilience—reducing the discourse of preparedness for future disasters.

Immunotherapy with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) to treat non-muscle invasive bladder cancer has become an effective and superior alternative to chemotherapy. Intravesical treatment with BCG appears to be relatively safe;however, occasionally BCG infection complicates such treatment. In the present work we describe three patients in whom BCG infection occurred after intravesical BCG therapy. All patients had positive urine culture forMycobacterium tuberculosis complex, using AccuProbe culture identification and then Genotype Mycobacterium MTBC test identified Mycobacterium bovis BCG. The diagnosis is difficult and microbiologic study is usually negative, so high index of suspicion is essential.

Some species of the Lathyrus genus are among the most promising crops for marginal lands, with high resilience to drought, flood, and fungal diseases, combined with high yields and seed nutritional value. However, lack of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying its outstanding performance and methodologies to identify elite genotypes has hampered its proper use in breeding. Chlorophyl a fast fluorescence transient （JIP test）, was used to evaluate water deficit （WD） resistance in Lathyrus genus. Our results reveal unaltered photochemical values for al studied genotypes showing resistance to mild WD. Under severe WD, two Lathyrus sativus genotypes showed remarkable resilience maintaining the photochemical efficiency, contrary to other genotypes studied. Performance index （PIABS） is the best parameter to screen genotypes with improved performance and grain production under WD. Moreover, we found that JIP indices are good indicators of genotypic grain production under WD. Quantum yield of electron transport （wEo） and efficiency with which＆trapped excitons can move electrons further than QA （c0） revealed as important traits related to improved photosyn-thetic performance and should be exploited in future Lathyrus germplasm improvements. The JIP test herein described showed to be an expeditious tool to screen and to identify elite genotypes with improved drought resistance.

Neisseria meningitidis is a gram-negative diplococcus which causes invasive disease. The most frequent clinical manifestations caused by infection with this pathogen, are meningitis and fulminant septic shock. More benign forms with a subacute or chronic pattern are rare but still can evolve to meningitis and have a fatal outcome. This entity is difficult to recognize, as febrile erythema with otherwise good general condition may simulate other diseases, namely viral infections. The authors reported the cases of two healthy young adults who were misdiagnosed with a viral infection. What they really had was a meningococcemia without meningitis presenting with mild and unspecific symptoms, such as, intermittent fever and a discrete macular rash. We pretend to highlight this rare, unspecific and heterogeneous symptoms which can provoke negligence of a potentially life threatening condition.

The initial trauma to the spinal cord is just the starting point for a cascade of endogenous events that will collectively determine the injury extension. These secondary events include, but are not limited to： glutamate excitoxicity, induction of apoptotic pathways, ionic imbalances and the development of a strong and dysfunctional inflammatory response. The secondary injury is associated to an aggravation of neuronal damage increasing the extent of neurological deficits （Ek et al., 2010）.

BACKGROUND Individuals within specific risk groups for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)[mucinous cystic lesions(MCLs),hereditary risk(HR),and new-late onset diabetes mellitus(NLOD)]represent an opportunity for early cancer detection.Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)is a premium image modality for PDAC screening and precursor lesion characterization.While no specific biomarker is currently clinically available for this purpose,glypican-1(GPC1)is overexpressed in the circulating exosomes(crExos)of patients with PDAC compared with healthy subjects or those harboring benign pancreatic diseases.AIM To evaluate the capacity of GPC1+crExos to identify individuals at higher risk within these specific groups,all characterized by EUS.METHODS This cross-sectional study with a prospective unicentric cohort included 88 subjects:40 patients with MCL,20 individuals with HR,and 20 patients with NLOD.A control group(CG)was submitted to EUS for other reasons than pancreatic pathology,with normal pancreas and absence of hereditary risk factors(n=8).The inclusion period was between October 2016 and January 2019,and the study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João,Porto,Portugal.All patients provided written informed consent.EUS and blood tests for quantification of GPC1+crExos by flow cytometry and carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA 19-9)levels by ELISA were performed in all subjects.EUS-guided tissue acquisition was done whenever necessary.For statistical analysis,SPSS®27.0(IBM Corp.,Armonk,NY,United States)version was used.All graphs were created using GraphPad Prism 7.00(GraphPad Software,San Diego,CA,United States).RESULTS Half of MCLs harbored worrisome features(WF)or high-risk stigmata(HRS).Pancreatic abnormalities were detected by EUS in 10.0%and 35.0%in HR and NLOD individuals,respectively,all considered non-malignant and“harmless.”Median levels of GPC1+crExos were statistically different:MCL[99.4%,interquartile range(IQR):94.9%-99.8%],HR(82.0%,IQR:28.9%-98.2%),NLOD(12.6%,IQR:5.2%-63.4%)
