efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid salts distilled from coconut oil against two enteric pathogen challenges in weanling piglets

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(MCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of MCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic escherichia coli(eTeC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the eTeC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pn d 8 PI(eTeC F4 trial).When analyzing the entire colonic microbiota(16 S rRnA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the eTeC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IeL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With eTeC F4,the IeL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

In this paper, a sliding mode control with adaptive gain combined with a high-order sliding mode observer to solve the tracking problem for a quadrotor UAV is addressed, in presence of bounded external disturbances and parametric uncertainties. The high order sliding mode observer is designed for estimating the linear and angular speed in order to implement the proposed scheme. Furthermore, a Lyapunov function is introduced to design the controller with the adaptation law, whereas an analysis of finite time convergence towards to zero is provided, where sufficient conditions are obtained. Regarding previous works from literature, one important advantage of proposed strategy is that the gains of control are parameterized in terms of only one adaptive parameter, which reduces the control effort by avoiding gain overestimation. numerical simulations for tracking control of the quadrotor are given to show the performance of proposed adaptive control–observer scheme.

The present work reports the discovery and the complete characterisation of an ancient cultivated rose variety found growing in a private garden in the southwest of the Principality of Asturias(northern Spain).The variety is here given the name *** majority of roses currently cultivated belong to the so-called group of‘Modern Roses’,all of which were obtained after 1867 via artificial crosses and improvement *** are destined for ornamental *** the 19th century,the great majority of the many ancient cultivated roses in europe were used in perfumery and cosmetics,or had medicinal *** damascena and Rosa centifollia are still grown and used by the French and Bulgarian perfume *** Asturian Massif of the Cantabrian Mountain Range provides a natural habitat for some 75%of the wild members of the genus Rosa,but until now there was no evidence that this area was home to ancient cultivated roses.A complete botanical description is here provided for a discovered ancient *** is also characterised according to a series of sequence tagged microsatellite sites,and its agronomic features are *** addition,a histological description(optical and scanning electronic microscope studies)of the petals is offered,along with an analysis of the volatile compounds present in these organs as determined by solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass *** results reveal the uniqueness of this ancient type of rose and suggest it may be of interest to the perfume industry.

Objective： To evaluate the effect of chitosan （CH） and hydrogen peroxide （H2O） seed coatings and seedling sprinklings on two different maize varieties by measuring their phenology, the H202 presence, the catalase （CAT） activity, and the protein quantity. Methods： Seven groups of ten seeds for each maize variety were treated with CH （2% （20 g/L） and 0.2% （2 g/L）） or H2O2 （8 mmol/L） by coating, sprinkling, or both. Germination and seedling growth were measured. One month after germination, the presence of H202 in seedlings in the coated seed treatments was evaluated. Protein content and CAT activity were determined under all treatments. Results： H2O2 seed coating en- hanced the germination rate and increased seedling and stem length in the quality protein maize （QPM） variety. Seedlings had a higher emergence velocity under this treatment in both varieties. CH and H2O2 sprinklings did not have an effect on seedling phenology. exogenous application of H2O2 promoted an increase of endogenousH2O2. OH and H2O2seedling sprinkling increased the protein content in both maize varieties, while there was no significant effect on the CAT activity of treated seeds and seedlings. Conclusions： CH and H2O2 enhance some phenological and biochemical features of maize depending on their method of application.

Peripheral Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory effects of Smilax canariensis in an Animal Model

Smilax canariensis Brouss. ex Willd. is an endemic plant of the Canary Islands. Its rhizomes, leaves and stems have been traditionally used in Canary folk medicine to treat a wide variety of conditions including pain. Our objective is to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of different extracts of S. canariensis in Swiss mice, using established biological models for pain and inflammation, such as phenylquinone writhing test, formalin test, tail-flick test and mouse paw edema induced by carrageenan. Oral administration of S. canariensis extracts significantly reduce writhing episodes evoked by phenylquinone injection in a dose-dependent manner;and higher doses result in a reduction of pain similar to or higher than that of the reference drug piroxicam (59.56%;p e extracts also cause a marked dose-dependent inhibition of for-malin-induced pain in the second phase but only minimal inhibition of tail-flick behavior, suggesting that S. canariensis is not a centrally acting analgesic. Finally, in the carrageenan-induced hind paw edema model, the extracts show a moderate anti-inflammatory effect, the most active being the ethyl acetate fraction at 200 mg/kg p.o. (33.33%;p esults suggest that S. canariensis extracts have clear dose-dependent peripheral analgesic effects, which lends support to the traditional use of this medicinal plant to treat pain associated with inflammatory or other processes.

Five-year bio-monitoring of aquatic ecosystems near Artigas Antarctic Scientific Base, King George Island

Fildes Peninsula, in King George Island, Antarctica, has a great concentration of international facilities, and it has clearly been affected by human activities. The objective of this 5-year study was to assess the impact of anthropogenic activities on the bacterial abundance in water bodies close to Artigas Antarctic Scientific Base （BCAA, in Spanish Base Cientifica Antdrtica Artigas）. Water samples from areas under different human influence （Uruguay Lake, nearby ponds, and meltwater from Collins Glacier） were aseptically collected and refrigerated until processed. The number of heterotrophic bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. was analyzed using a culture-dependent approach. Physico-chemical properties of the water samples （temperature, pH, and conductivity） were also determined. Results showed that water from the highly affected area, Uruguay Lake, where the pump that provides water to the BCAA is located, did not suffer significant fluctuations in heterotrophie bacterial abundance （10^4- 10^5 ***^-1）; however, Pseudomonas abundance increased until becoming the predominant population. In other water samples, the number of heterotrophie bacteria and Pseudomonas gradually increased during this 5-year study, by 2014 reaching similar values to those observed for Uruguay Lake. The implications of human activities on Antarctic bacterial abundance are discussed.

effectiveness of an intervention for reducing social stigma towards mental illness in adolescents

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention for reducing social stigma towards mental illness in adolescents. The effect of gender and knowledge of someone with mental illness was measured. MeTHODS: Two hundred and eighty secondary school students were evaluated using the Community Attitudes towards Mental Illness(CAMI) questionnaire. The schools were randomized and some received the intervention and others acted as the control group. The programme consisted of providing information via a documentary film and of contact with healthcare staff in order to reduce the social stigma within the school environment. ReSULTS: The intervention was effective in reducing the CAMI authoritarianism and social restrictiveness subscales. The intervention showed significant changes in girls in terms of authoritarianism and social restrictiveness, while boys only showed significant changes in authoritarianism. Following the intervention, a significant reduction was found in authoritarianism and social restrictiveness in those who knew someone with mental illness, and only in authoritarianism in those who did not know anyone with mental illness. COnCLUSIOn: The intervention was effective to reduce social stigma towards people with mental illness, especially in the area of authoritarianism. Some differences were found depending on gender and whether or not the subjects knew someone with mental illness.
