Krill oil(KO)exhibits various biological activities,such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor ***,the inhibitory effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)in vitro and in vivo have not yet been *** study investigated the anti-BPH effects of KO extracted by an enzymatic hydrolysis *** treatment inhibited the proliferation of WMPY-1 and BPH-1 cells by induction of G0/G1 phase arrest through the modulation of positive and negative regulators in both prostate cell *** treatment stimulated phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK)and p38 *** addition,KO changed the expression of BPH-related markers(5α-reductase,androgen receptor,FGF,Bcl-2,and Bax)and the activity of the proliferation-mediated NF-κB binding ***-induced levels of proliferation-mediated molecules of prostate cells were attenuated in the presence of siRNA-specific p-38(si-p38)and JNK(si-JNK).Furthermore,the administration of KO alleviated prostate size and weight and the cell layer thickness of prostate glands in a testosterone enanthate-induced BPH rat *** treatment altered the level of dihydrotestosterone in serum and the expression levels of BPH-related markers in prostate ***,KO-mediated inhibition of prostatic growth was validated by histological *** results suggest that KO has an inhibitory effect on BPH in prostate cells in vitro and in ***,KO might be a potential prophylactic or therapeutic agent for patients with BPH.

Enhancement of motor functional recovery in thoracic spinal cord injury: voluntary wheel running versus forced treadmill exercise

Spinal cord injury necessitates effective rehabilitation strategies, with exercise therapies showing promise in promoting recovery. This study investigated the impact of rehabilitation exercise on functional recovery and morphological changes following thoracic contusive spinal cord injury. After a 7-day recovery period after spinal cord injury, mice were assigned to either a trained group(10 weeks of voluntary running wheel or forced treadmill exercise) or an untrained group. Bi-weekly assessments revealed that the exercise-trained group, particularly the voluntary wheel exercise subgroup, displayed significantly improved locomotor recovery, more plasticity of dopaminergic and serotonin modulation compared with the untrained group. Additionally, exercise interventions led to gait pattern restoration and enhanced transcranial magnetic motor-evoked potentials. Despite consistent injury areas across groups, exercise training promoted terminal innervation of descending axons. In summary, voluntary wheel exercise shows promise for enhancing outcomes after thoracic contusive spinal cord injury, emphasizing the role of exercise modality in promoting recovery and morphological changes in spinal cord injuries. Our findings will influence future strategies for rehabilitation exercises, restoring functional movement after spinal cord injury.

QKD system with fast active optical path length compensation

We develop a quantum key distribution (QKD) system with fast active optical path length compensation. A rapid and reliable active optical path length compensation scheme is proposed and applied to a plug-and-play QKD system. The system monitors changes in key rates and controls it is own operation automatically. The system achieves its optimal performance within three seconds of operation, which includes a sifted key rate of 5.5 kbps and a quantum bit error rate of less than 2% after an abrupt temperature variation along the 25 km quantum channel. The system also operates well over a 24 h period while completing more than 60 active optical path length compensations.

How does ethanol induce apoptotic cell death of SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells?

A body of evidence suggests that ethanol can lead to damage of neuronal cells. However, the mechanism underlying the ethanol-induced damage of neuronal cells remains unclear. The role of mitogen-activated protein kinases in ethanol-induced damage was investigated in SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells. 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide cell viability assay, DNA fragmentation detection, and flow cytometric analysis showed that ethanol induced apoptotic cell death and cell cycle arrest, characterized by increased caspase-3 activity, DNA fragmentation, nuclear disruption, and G1 arrest of cell cycle of the SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells. In addition, western blot analysis indicated that ethanol induced a lasting increase in c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase activity and a transient increase in p38 kinase activity of the neuroblastoma cells. c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase or p38 kinase inhibitors significantly reduced the ethanol-induced cell death. Ethanol also increased p53 phosphorylation, followed by an increase in p21 tumor suppressor protein and a decrease in phospho-Rb （retinoblastoma） protein, leading to alterations in the expressions and activity of cyclin dependent protein kinases. Our results suggest that ethanol mediates apoptosis of SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells by activating p53-related cell cycle arrest possibly through activation of the c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase-related cell death pathway.

Influence of tool plunge depth and welding distance on friction stir lap welding of AA5454-O aluminum alloy plates with different thicknesses

AA5454-O aluminum alloy plates with thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.0 mm were friction-stir-lap-welded (FSLWed).The influences of the tool plunge depth and welding distance on surface appearance,macrostructure and mechanical properties of the FSLWed plates were experimentally *** tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was compared with that of the adhesive-bonded ***-free FSLWed zones were successfully obtained in all the tool plunge depths and the welding *** FSLWed zones exhibited the relatively smooth surface *** all the FSLWed conditions,the FSLWed zone exhibited higher average hardness than the base *** addition,the upper plate exhibited a higher average hardness than the lower plate,although there was no special tendency in spite of the change in the tool plunge depth and the welding *** maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was much higher than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy ***,under the FSLW condition of the plunge depth of 1.8 mm and the welding distance of 40 mm,the tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate reached a level about 41% greater than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy *** addition,the maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate was increased with the increase of the welding distance.

Crop models have been developed for wide research purposes and scales,but they have low compatibility due to the diversity of current modeling *** model adaptability can lead to model *** deep neural networks have no conventional modeling parameters,diverse input and output combinations are possible depending on model *** these advantages,no process-based crop model has been tested in full deep neural network *** objective of this study was to develop a process-based deep learning model for hydroponic sweet *** mechanism and multitask learning were selected to process distinct growth factors from the environment *** algorithms were modified to be suitable for the regression task of growth *** were conducted twice a year for 2 years in *** developed crop model,DeepCrop,recorded the highest modeling efficiency(=0.76)and the lowest normalized mean squared error(=0.18)compared to accessible crop models in the evaluation with unseen *** t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding distribution and the attention weights supported that DeepCrop could be analyzed in terms of cognitive *** the high adaptability of DeepCrop,the developed model can replace the existing crop models as a versatile tool that would reveal entangled agricultural systems with analysis of complicated information.

Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A using TiO2 and its separation by submerged hollowfiber ultrafiltration membrane

This study evaluates the adsorption ability ofbisphenol A（BPA） on titanium dioxide（TiO2） and its effect on the photocatalysis by advanced oxidation process using UV radiation and TiO2 photocatalyst. Degradation of BPA was also evaluated for the system without adsorption prior to photocatalytic reaction. The separation of TiO2 from BPA solution treated by pilot-scale photocatalytic reactor （capacity 0.16 m^3） was studied using submerged ultrafiltration （UF） membrane. It was found that although adsorption capacity of BPA was not high, adsorption played an important role in improving the efficiency ofphotocatalysis. On the other hand, during the separation of TiO2 particles from aqueous suspension, the permeate flux of the membrane was strongly affected by transmembrane pressure and TiO2 dose. The permeate turbidity was decreased below 1 NTU.
