Influence of Tropical Cyclone Landfalls on Spatiotemporal Variations in Typhoon Season Rainfall over South China

This study examined the impact of tropical cyclone (TC) landfalls on the spatiotemporal variations in the rainfall over South China for the period 1957–2005. The target region was selected to show the noteworthy contribution of TC landfalls to the total rainfall during the typhoon season (July–October). Two prevailing spatial variations in the rainfall were obtained from an EOF analysis. The first EOF mode displays singlesign variability over South China with an explained variance of 23.4%. The associated time series of this mode fluctuates on a decadal timescale and was found to be correlated with TC genesis in the South China Sea. The second EOF mode shows a seesaw pattern between Hainan Island/Guangdong Province and the remaining regions with an explained variance of 11.4%. This seesaw pattern results from an anti-correlation in seasonal TC landfalls between the two regions, which was found in previous studies. This is related to the strengthening (weakening) of the upper tropospheric jets and the corresponding development of a massive anticyclonic (cyclonic) circulation over East Asia. The EOF analysis was also conducted using just the data for rainfall caused by landfalling TCs. This revealed that the first EOF mode using just the TC-induced rainfall is nearly identical to the second mode from the total rainfall. The obvious seesaw pattern of the first mode when employing just the TC-induced rainfall in the EOF analysis implies that this pattern has larger temporal variability than the single-signed pattern (i.e., the first EOF mode using the total rainfall) in terms of TC landfalls. This study suggests that TC landfalls over South China and the accompanying rainfall significantly modulate the spatial variation of the typhoon season rainfall there.

Post-translational modifications （PTMs） of transcription factors play a crucial role in regulating metabolic homeostasis. These modifications include phosphory- lation, methylation, acetylation, ubiqulUnation, SUMOy- lation, and O-GIcNAcylation. Recent studies have shed light on the importance of lysine acetylation at nonhis- tone proteins including transcription factors. Acetyla- tion of transcription factors affects subcellular distribution, DNA affinity, stability, transcriptional activity, and current investigations are aiming to further expand our understanding of the role of lysine acetyla- tion of transcription factors. In this review, we summarize recent studies that provide new insights into the role of protein lysine-acetylation in the transcriptional regulation of metabolic homeostasis.

Multilayer MoS2 is a promising active material for sensing, energy harvesting, and optoelectronic devices owing to its intriguing tunable electronic band structure. However, its optoelectronic applications have been limited due to its indirect band gap nature. In this study, we fabricated a new type of phototransistor using multilayer MoS2 crystal hybridized with p-type organic semiconducting rubrene patches. Owing to the outstanding photophysical properties of rubrene, the device characteristics such as charge mobility and photoresponsivity were considerably enhanced to an extent depending on the thickness of the rubrene patches. A dynamic infiltration technique to synthesize nanolayered cathodes for high performance and robust solid oxide fuel cells

Solution infiltration is a popular technique for the surface modification of solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC)***,the synthesis of nanostructured SOFC cathodes by infiltration is a tedious process that often requires several infiltration and high temperature(≥500℃)calcination ***,fabricating large-area nanostructured cathodes via infiltration still requires serious ***,we propose a facile and scalable urea assisted ultrasonic spray infiltration technique for nanofabrication of SOFC *** is demonstrated that by using urea as a precipitating agent,the calcination after each infiltration cycle can be omitted and the next infiltration can be performed just after a drying step(≤100℃).Finally,the precipitates can be converted into a desired catalyst phase in single calcination thus,a nanostructured cathode can be fabricated in a much faster *** is also shown that the low calcination temperature of the cathode(≤900℃)can produce highly durable SOFC performance even without employing a Ce_(0.9)Gd_(0.1)O_(2)(GDC)diffusion barrier layer which provides the ease of SOFC *** coupling with an ultrasonic spray technique,the urea assisted infiltration can be scaled up for any desired cathode ***_(0.6)Sr_(0.4)Co_(0.2)Fe_(0.8)O_(3) nanolayered cathode was fabricated and it was characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)*** showed the formation of a nanolayer cathode just after 5 cycles of the urea assisted infiltration while the XRD and TEM confirmed the phase and stoichiometric uniformity of the 100 nm cathode *** effectiveness of the newly developed technique was further verified by the stable operation of a GDC buffer layer free SOFC having an active cathode area of 25 cm^(2) during a 1200 h durability *** research outcomes propose urea assisted ultrasonic spray infiltration as a facile,scalable,and commercially viable method

What can be the criteria of outpatient-based endoscopic resection for colon polyp?

AIM: To investigate whether out-patient based endo-scopic mucosal resection(EMR) for colon polyps ≤ 10 mm is ***: Between January 2004 and December 2012, a total of 3015 EMR cases conducted in 1320 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The factors contributing delayed hemorrhage were analyzed. We calculated the probability of delayed bleeding after stratifying conditions of specific risk ***: The size of the polyp(95%CI: 1.096-1.164, P 10 mm, 0.54%-2.08%; size > 20 mm, 4.22%-11.41%. 95%CI was determined for the risk of serious immediate bleeding for a polyp ≤ 10 mm was 0.10%-0.56%. Finally, 95%CI for percent of incomplete resection was 0.07%-0.49% in polyps ≤ 10 mm. CONCLUSION: It seems acceptable to perform outpa-tient-based EMR for colon polyps ≤ 10 mm.

Effects of Hwangryunhaedok-tang on gastrointestinal motility function in mice

AIM To investigate the effects of Hwangryunhaedok-tang(HHT) on gastrointestinal(GI) motility in *** The effects of a boiling water extract of HHT(HHTE) on GI motility were investigated by calculating percent intestinal transit rates(ITR%) and gastric emptying(GE) values using Evans Blue and phenol red, respectively, in normal mice and in mice with experimentally induced GI motility dysfunction(GMD). In addition, the effects of the four components of HHT, that is, Gardeniae Fructus(GF), Scutellariae Radix(SR), Coptidis Rhizoma(CR), and Phellodendri Cortex(PC), on GI motility were also *** In normal ICR mice, ITR% and GE values were significantly and dose-dependently increased by the intragastric administration of HHTE(0.1-1 g/kg). The ITR% values of GMD mice were significantly lower than those of normal mice, and these reductions were significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by HHTE(0.1-1 g/kg). Additionally, GF, CR, and PC dosedependently increased ITR% and GE values in normal and GMD *** These results suggest that HHT is a novel candidate for the development of a gastroprokinetic agent for the GI tract.

Risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with drug-resistant chronic hepatitis B

AIM:To investigate the risk factors and characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in the patients with drug-resistant chronic hepatitis B(CHB).METHODS:A total of 432 patients with drug-resistant CHB were analyzed retrospectively from January 2004to December 2012. The patients were divided into two groups:the HCC group(n = 57) and the non-HCC group(n = 375). Two groups compared using logistic regression for various patients and viral characteristics in order to identify associated risk factors for ***,patient and tumor characteristics of HCC patients with na ve CHB(N group,n = 117) were compared to the HCC group(R group,n = 57) to identify any difference in HCC characteristics between ***:A significant difference was found for age,platelet count,alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),positivity of HBeAg,seroconversion rate of HBeAg,virologic response,the Child-Pugh score,presence of rtM204I,and the duration of antiviral treatment in non-HCC and HCC group. Cirrhosis,age(> 50 years),HBeAg(+),virologic non-responder status,and rtM204I mutants were independent risk factors for the development of HCC. The R group had lower serum C-reactive protein(CRP) and AFP levels,earlier stage tumors,and a shorter mean tumor surveillance period than the N group. However,the total follow-up duration was not significantly different between the two ***:13.2% of patients with drug-resistant CHB developed HCC. Age,cirrhosis,YIDD status,HBeAg status,and virologic response are associated with risk of HCC. Patients with drug-resistant CHB and these clinical factors may benefit from closer HCC surveillance.

Preliminary Results of the Ground-Based Orographic Snow Enhancement Experiment for the Easterly Cold Fog (Cloud) at Daegwallyeong during the 2006 Winter

The snow enhancement experiments, carried out by injecting AgI and water vapor into orographically enhanced clouds （fog）, have been conducted to confirm Li and Pitter＇s forced condensation process in a natural situation. Nine ground-based experiments have been conducted at Daegwallyeong in the Taebaek Mountains for the easterly foggy days from January-February 2006. We then obtained the optimized conditions for the Daegwallyeong region as follows： the small seeding rate （1.04 g min-1） of AgI for the easterly cold fog with the high humidity of Gangneung. Additional experiments are needed to statistically estimate the snowfall increment caused by the small AgI seeding into the orographical fog （cloud） over the Taeback Mountains.
