Lacidipine,thiamine pyrophosphate and their combination on the ocular ischemic syndrome induced by bilateral common carotid artery ligation

AIM:To investigate the effect of lacidipine,thiamine pyrophosphate(TPP)and the combination of lacidipine and TPP against oxidative and inflammatory eye damage induced by bilateral common carotid artery ligation in ***:Male albino Wistar rats were categorized as those who underwent sham surgery(SG),right and left common carotid cross-clamping and unclamping procedure(CCU),lacidipine+CCU(LCCU),TPP+CCU(TCCU),and combination of lacidipine and TPP(LTC)+CCU(LTCCU).One hour before anesthesia,the LCCU(n=6)received lacidipine(4 mg/kg,orally)and the TCCU(n=6)received TPP(20 mg/kg,intraperitoneally).The SG(n=6)and CCU(n=6)received the same volume of distilled water from the same *** anesthesia(60 mg/kg ketamine,intraperitoneally),the necks of the rats were opened in the *** was created for 10min by placing clips on the right and left common carotid *** in the SG only underwent subcutaneous *** 10min,the clips were removed and reperfusion was achieved for six ***,the animals were euthanized(120 mg/kg ketamine,intraperitoneally)and the levels of oxidant,antioxidant and proinflammatory cytokines in the eye tissues were *** retinal tissue of the eye was also examined ***:Lacidipine,TPP,and LTC significantly prevent the increase in malondialdehyde,tumor necrosis factoralpha,interleukin-1β(IL-1β),and IL-6 levels,decrease in total glutathione levels,superoxide dismutase and catalase activities and histopathological retinal damage in eye tissue induced by bilateral common carotid artery ligation in *** impact of these drugs on protection is determined to be LTC>lacidipine>***:As a result of the study,it is concluded that LTC may be more effective than lacidipine and TPP alone in treating ocular ischemic syndrome.

Noninvasive ventilation in cancer children with acute respiratory failure

Objective: To establish the effectiveness of noninvasive ventilation in cancer children with acute respiratory failure. Methods: The data of 33 cancer patients were obtained prospectively from six different pediatric intensive care units in Turkey between the years of 2012 and 2013. Results: The diagnosis was leukemias in 25 (75.8%), lymphomas in 3 (9.1%) and other solid tumors in 5 (15.1%) patients. Pneumonia in 12 (36.3%) and sepsis in 15 (45.4%) patients were seen as the common reasons of respiratory failure. The mean PaO2/FiO2 ratios were (164.22 ± 37.24) and (126.80 ± 42.73) in noninvasive ventilation success and failure group, respectively. Noninvasive ventilation was successful in 18 (54.5%) patients. The failure group consisted of 15 patients required intubation. A total of 14 (42.4%) patients died. The clinical outcome in terms of success and failure was meaningful statistically (P = 0.0 00 1). Conclusions: Our results could encourage the use of noninvasive ventilation in children with cancer who develop acute respiratory failure. It should be considered as a useful therapeutic approach to avoid endotracheal intubation.

SYNTHESIS,CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF 4-[(4-HYDROXYBENZYLIDENE)AMINO]PHENOL AND ITS POLYMER

The oxidative polycondensation reaction conditions of 4-[（4-hydroxybenzylidene） amino] phenol （4-HBAP） were studied with H2O2, air oxygen and NaOCl in an aqueous alkaline medium between 50 and 90℃. The structures of the obtained monomer and polymer were confirmed by FT-IR, UV-Vis, 1H- and 13C-NMR and elemental analysis. The characterization was made by TG-DTA, size exclusion chromatography （SEC） and solubility tests. At the optimum reaction conditions, the yield of poly[4-（4-hydroxybenzylidene amino） phenol] （P-4-HBAP） was found to be 48.3% （for H2O2 oxidant）, 80.5% （for air O2 oxidant） and 86.4% （for NaOCl oxidant）. According to the SEC analysis, the number-average molecular weight （Mn）, weight-average molecular weight （Mw） and polydispersity index （PDI） values of P-4-HBAP was found to be 8950, 10970 g tool^-1 and 1.225, respectively, using H202; and l l610, 15190 g tool^-1 and 1.308 respectively, using air 02 and 7900, 9610 g mol^-1 and 1.216, respectively, using NaOC1. According to TG-DTA analyses, P-4-HBAP was more stable than 4-HBAP against thermal decomposition. The weight loss of P-4-HBAP was found to be 49.27% at 1000℃. The highest occupied molecular orbital （HOMO） and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital （LUMO） values calculated from electrochemical measurement. Electrochemical energy gaps （Eg＇） of 4-HBAP and P-4-HBAP were found to be -5.46, -5.28; -2.26, -2.67; 3.20 and 2.61 eV, respectively. According to UV-Vis measurements, optical band gap （Eg） of 4-HBAP and P-4-HBAP were found to be 3.34 and 3.01 eV, respectively. Also, antimicrobial activities of 4-HBAP and P-4-HBAP were examined against selected some bacteria. The electrical conductivity of the polymer was measured after doping with iodine.

A case of asymptomatic fungal and bacterial colonization of an intragastric balloon

Intragastric balloon therapy, as a part of a multidisciplinary weight management program, is an effective short-term intervention for weight loss. Although the insertion procedure is easy and generally well tolerated by patients, a few complications can occur. We report here a heavy smoker with intragastric balloon inser-tion complicated by colonization with opportunistic organisms. The 27-year-old female, body mass index 35.5 kg/m2, had a BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon inserted under conscious sedation without any perioperative complications. Six months later, when the standard removal time arrived, the balloon was seen to be covered with a necrotic white-gray material. Microbiological examination revealed Enterobacter cloacae and Candida species yeast colonies. We recommend that asymptomatic fungal and/or bacterial colonization should be considered among the complications of the intragastric balloon procedure, despite its rarity.

Effect of thermal treatment on the swelling and surface roughness of common alder and wych elm wood

Wood heat treatment has increased signifi- cantly in recent years and is still growing as an industrial process to improve some wood properties. We studied the change of swellingand surface roughness of common alder （Alnus glutinosa （L.） Gaertn. ***） and wych elm （Ulmus glabra Huds.） woods after heat treatment at two different temperatures and durations. The temperatures were 180 and 200 ℃ and the durations were 2 and 4 h. A stylus method was employed to evaluate the surface char- acteristics of the samples. Roughness measurements by the stylus method were made in the direction perpendicular to the fiber on the wood surface. Four main roughness parameters, mean arithmetic deviation of profile （Ra）, mean peak-to-valley height （Rz）, root mean square roughness （Rq）, and maximum roughness （Ry） were used to evaluate the effect of heat treatment on the surface characteristics of the specimens. Swelling and surface roughness parameters （Ra, Rz, Ry, and Rq） differed significantly for two temper- atures and two durations of heat treatment. Swelling and surface roughness values decreased with increasing treat- ment temperature and treatment times.

Serum arylesterase and paraoxonase activity in patients with chronic hepatitis

AIM： To investigate the relationship between serum paraoxonase （PON1）, AST, ALT, GGT, and arylesterase （AE） activity alterations and the degree of liver damage in patients with chronic hepatitis. METHODS： We studied 34 chronic hepatitis patients and 32 control subjects, aged between 35 and 65 years, in the Department of Infection and Clinical Microbiology at the Firat University School of Medicine. Blood samples were collected from subjects between 8：00 and 10：00 a.m. following a 12-h fast. Baseline and salt-stimulated PON1 activities were measured by the hydrolysis of paraoxon. Phenyl acetate was used as the substrate and formed phenol was measured spectrophotometrically at 270 nm after the addition of a 10-fold diluted serum sample in AE activity measurements. RESULTS： The results of this investigation revealed that the levels of AE activity decreased from 132±52 to 94± 36 （29%）, baseline PON1 activity from 452±112 to 164 ±67 （64%）, salt-stimulated PON1 activity from 746± 394 to 294±220 （61%）, HDL from 58.4±5.1 to 47.2±5.6 （200）, triglyceride from 133±51.2 to 86±34.0 （350）, while a slight increase in the level of LDL （from 163± 54.1 to 177.3±56.0; 9%） and significant increases in the levels of AST （from 29±9.3 to 98±44）, ALP （from 57.2±13.1 to 91±38.1）, ALT （from 27.9±3.32 to 89± 19.1）, GGT （from 24.3±2.10 to 94±48.2）, total bilirubin （from 0.74±0.02 to 1.36±0.06; 84%） and direct bilirubin （from 0.18±0.01 to 0.42±0.04; 133%） were detected. However, the levels of albumin, total protein, cholesterol, and uric acid were almost the same in chronic hepatitis and the control subjects.CONCLUSION： Low PON1 and AE activity may contribute to the increased liver dysfunction in chronic hepatitis patients by reducing the ability of HDL to retard LDL oxidation and might be clinically useful for monitoring the disease of chronic hepatitis.

Influence of Temperatures on the Tautomerism of the N-（1H- Imidazoline-2-yl）-lH-benzimidazol-2-amine and Investigation of Its Electrochemical Behaviour

Synthesis of N-（1H-imidazoline-2-yl）-lH-benzimidazol-2-amine was carried out under microwave irradiation （MWI） conditions. Dynamic 1H NMR investigation of N-（lH-imidazoline-2-yl）-lH-benzimidazol-2-amine compound was reported at temperature range of 223--333 K in DMF-d7. Some physical parameters, such as coalescence temperature （Tc）, the free energy of activation （△G＊） and rate constant （k） values were calculated from its IH NMR spectra at various temperatures. Electrochemical feature of this compound was investigated by cyclic （CV） and square wave voltammetry （SWV）.

Statistical optimization of adsorption processes for removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol by activated carbon derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches

The adsorption capacity of activated carbon produced from oil palm empty fruit bunches through removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol from aqueous solution was carried out in the laboratory. The activated carbon was produced by thermal activation of activation time with 30 min at 800℃. The adsorption process conditions were determined with the statistical optimization followed by central composite design. A developed polynomial model for operating conditions of adsorption process indicated that the optimum conditions for maximum adsorption of phenolic compound were： agitation rate of 100 r/min, contact time of 8 h, initial adsorbate concentration of 250 mg/L and pH 4. Adsorption isotherms were conducted to evaluate biosorption process. Langmuir isotherm was more favorable （R^2=0.93） for removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol by the activated carbon rather than Freundlich isotherm （R^2=0.88）.

In this article, we study the flows of curves in the Galilean 3-space and its equiform geometry without any constraints. We find that the Frenet equations and the intrinsic quantities of the inelastic flows of curves are independent of time. We show that the motion of curves in the Galilean 3-space and its equiform geometry are described by the inviscid and viscous Burgers＇ equations.
