Mountainous regions have disadvantages in economic development because of harsh physical and climatic ***,winter tourism activities are one of the key components for supporting economic development in the *** a ski resort area supports direct and indirect employment in a region,and it stops immigration from mountainous regions to other *** research aimed to assess the potential ski areas using a multi criteria evaluation technique in the Van region which is located in the eastern part of Tü*** this context,snow cover duration,sun effect,slope,slope length,elevation,population density,distance from main roads and lake visibility were used as input factors in the decision making *** factor was standardized using a fuzzy technique based on existing well-known ski centers in Tü*** weight of inputs was defined by applying a survey to the professional *** most important factors were detected as transportation opportunities and snow covers whereas,the least important factors were elevation and population ***,lake visibility was very important to make a difference from other existing facilities in the ***,it was included as constraints and lake visible areas were extracted at the final stage of the *** ski areas were mapped in three levels as professional,intermediate and beginner *** of the suitable areas was selected as a sample projection and for the 3D simulation of the ski investment *** costs and benefits were *** was found that a ski tourism area investment can be amortized in 3 years in the region.

An Optical Sensor Based on Polyvinyl Benzyl Malonate Cross-Linked with Divinyl Benzene Dispersed in a Hydrogel Membrane for Detection of Some Heavy Metals

In previous work we have developed a dicarboxylate functionalized polymer that demonstrated chemical sensing. It showed good response to pH changes as well as to varying concentrations of copper and calcium ions. Our recent in-vest- tigations showed interesting results upon testing the functionalized sensing polymer on heavy metals. This sensor is composed of microspheres of polyvinyl benzyl malonate lightly-cross-linked with divinyl benzene dispersed in a hydrogel membrane. The response of the optical sensor is based on the interaction between the metal cations with the deprotonated functional group. The polymer, thus, undergoes shrinking as a result of neutralization of adjacent negative charges on the back-bone of the polymer. This causes significant changes in the optical properties of the sensing element. The optical changes were measured as absorbance vs. wavelength as the sensing membrane is exposed to solutions of varying concentrations of heavy metal ions. The sensor showed significant increase in absorbance up to a concentration of 5 × 10-3 M to the following metal ions: Ni2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+. Furthermore, the studied capacity of the derivatized microspheres showed close values to Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ (1.20, 1.09, 1.08 mmol/g respectively). These kinds of properly functionalized polymers appear to be suitable, versatile sensing elements for the detection of low concentrations of heavy metal ions. In addition, all of the tested heavy metals showed a similar value of the equilibrium formation constant, (log Kf1 is 2.63). In contrast, the sensor showed no significant response to varying concentrations of K+ and Mg2+ metal ions.

Cancerous diseases and diseases resulting from bacteria and fungi are some of the pressures that humans ***,the development of biomaterials that are resistant to cancerous diseases,bacteria,and fungi has become one of the requirements of the medical field to extend the life of the biomaterial and fight pathogens after implanting these materials inside the human *** of the important biomaterials used in the field of orthopedics is *** this research,Nano substituted hydroxyapatite was prepared by the wet precipitation method,including replacing 5%of the calcium ions with neodymium,cerium,magnesium,and zinc ions in cationic *** tests were carried out to characterize the prepared *** biological properties were evaluated by examining the resistance of the substituted hydroxyapatite to bacteria and fungi,in addition to testing the effect of the material on normal cells and bone cancer *** results showed a new structure of hydroxyapatite after the substitution process and a significant improvement in the biological properties of the prepared biomaterial compared to other researches.

Optimization of Rolling Parameters for Enhancing Surface Integrity of Aluminum Alloy

In this current work,aluminum alloy grade 2024 is adopted as a plate material that is used in the rolling process with three different parameters including thickness reduction,forming temperature,and density of lubrication *** experimental procedure of the rolling process is performed using the design of the experiment based on the Taguchi technique(L27),then surface roughness,surface hardness,and surface residual stresses are *** results showed that the lubrication density has a significant impact on the surface roughness which depends on the lubrication properties(mineral oil type,natural fat,and kinematic viscosity)while surface hardness and surface residual stresses were strongly affected by thickness *** the other side,the augment in forming temperature can decrease the quality of the final surface finish and the surface hardness but reduce the induced residual *** best surface finish is obtained based on the optimum condition of the rolling factors are(R%_(3),T_(1),andρ_(3))while the optimum condition of rolling parameters that generate higher hardness and compressive residual stresses are(R%_(3)T_(1)ρ_(1)).

A comparative assessment of catchment runoff generation and forest productivity in a semi-arid environment

Understanding the dynamic interactions between forest ecosystems and water in the Mediterranean region is essential for increasing ecosystem *** if many studies were implemented to analyse the variations of water and net primary productivity(NPP)in the last decade,this is still an important research question especially for the Eastern Mediterranean,where the research attempts are *** main objective of this study was to carry out a comparative analysis of catchment runoff generation and forest NPP and to reveal their temporal dynamics at basin scale in a semi-arid Mediterranean *** methodology consisted three steps:(i)estimating catchment runoff generation by implementing process-based J2000 modelling suite,(ii)modelling NPP of the land cover/use types by adapting an ecosystem-process model(BIOME-Biogeochemical cycles)and(iii)assessing the spatio-temporal variability of NPP and runoff dynamics by incorporating the modelling results with multiple regression *** simulations showed that temperature highly contributed to NPP variations of needle-leaf forests and *** multiple regression analysis also indicated that runoff was influenced by elevation,precipitation and forest *** relationship showed that the inter-annual variability in forest NPP would relate to the variations in runoff distribution across a small Mediterranean subcatchment.

Basin-wide hydrological system assessment under climate change scenarios through conceptual modelling

Mediterranean region is identified as a primary hot-spot for climate change due to the expected temperature and rainfall *** the potential impacts of climate change on the hydrology in these regions is an important task to develop long-term water management *** aim of this study was to quantify the potential impacts of the climate changes on local hydrological quantities at the Goksu Watershed at the Eastern Mediterranean,Turkey as a case study.A set of Representative Concentration Pathways(RCP)scenarios were used as drivers for the conceptual hydrological model J2000 to investigate how the hydrological system and the underlying processes would respond to projected future climate *** model was implemented to simulate daily hydrological quantities including runoff generation,Actual Evapotranspiration(AET)and soil-water balance for present(2005–2015)and future(up to 2100).The results indicated an increase of both precipitation and runoff throughout the region from January to *** region showed a strong seasonally dependent runoff regime with higher flows during winter and spring and lower flows in summer and *** study provides a comparative methodology to include meteorological-hydrological modelling integration that can be feasible to assess the climate change impacts in mountainous regions.

Warfarin Compliance after Mechanical AVR in the Pediatric Population: Case Series from a Developing Country

Background and Aim: Mechanical prosthetic heart valves exert a lifelong thromboembolic complication requiring continuous antithrombotic therapy. Vitamin K antagonist is the recommended therapy of choice along with meticulous INR monitoring to achieve and maintain an INR of 2.0 - 3.0. The study aimed to assess the compliance of anticoagulant therapy in pediatric patients after AVR and to highlight the challenges faced during follow-ups. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at NICVD Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan for a time frame of 2 years from 2020-2021 where 7 patients were selected. Data were collected using hospital medical records and then validated through a phone call mediated structured questionnaire-based interview. Results: 2 out of 7 patients in the case series were compliant to regular follow-ups and had their INR in the desired range owing to their higher education status and access to INR clinic for regular follow-up in urban setting. Younger patients in the case series were non-compliant. 4 out of 7 patients who were on dual anti-coagulant regimens including warfarin and aspirin were either closer or within the range than compared to those on single drug regimen. Conclusion: Compliance was observed in patients who had favorable demographics and higher education. Multiple recent trials including PROACT and PROACT XA are underway to develop novel treatment options apart from warfarin after mechanical aortic valve replacement. Home-based INR testing kits provide easy access to regular testing in remote areas. Multi-center studies are required for in-depth analysis regarding reasons of non-compliance in pediatric population.
