This article introduced the work of ethylcellulose based polymeric microsphere loaded with nifedipine for reduction in frequency of administration with low solubility in aqueous medium and high rate of absorption in the stomach. The non-aqueous polymeric suspension was put dropwise into an aqueous medium containing polyvinyl alcohol as a surfactant for the synthesis of microsphere by solvent evaporation. The microspheres were characterized by different techniques, namely, XRD, SEM, and NMR. The formation of microspheres was confirmed by SEM. XRD analysis revealed the semi-crystallinity nature of microspheres. The NMR study indicated the presence of hetero-aromatic nucleus in the microsphere.

Separation of hematite from banded hematite jasper(BHJ) by magnetic coating

The separation of iron oxide from banded hematite jasper(BHJ) assaying 47.8% Fe, 25.6% Si O2 and 2.30%Al2O3 using selective magnetic coating was studied. Characterization studies of the low grade ore indicate that besides hematite and goethite,jasper, a microcrystalline form of quartzite, is the major impurity associated with this ore. Beneficiation by conventional magnetic separation technique could yield a magnetic concentrate containing 60.8% Fe with 51% Fe recovery. In order to enhance the recovery of the iron oxide minerals, fine magnetite, colloidal magnetite and oleate colloidal magnetite were used as the coating material. When subjected to magnetic separation, the coated ore produces an iron concentrate containing 60.2% Fe with an enhanced recovery of56%. The AFM studies indicate that the coagulation of hematite particles with the oleate colloidal magnetite facilitates the higher recovery of iron particles from the low grade BHJ iron ore under appropriate conditions.

Carbon Nanoparticle Exerts Positive Growth Effects with Increase in Productivity by Down-Regulating Phytochrome B and Enhancing Internal Temperature in Rice

The effects of carbon nanoparticle(CNP)on rice variety Swarna(MTU7029)were investigated.CNP induced effects similar to shade avoidance response(SAR)of Arabidopsis,with increase in shoot length,root length,root number,cotyledon area,chlorophyll content and total sugar content in rice seedlings.In mature plants,CNP treatment resulted increase in plant height,number of productive tillers per plant,normalized difference vegetation index,quantum yield and root growth.A total of 320 mg of CNP per plant administered in four doses resulted in improved grain traits such as filled grain rate,100-grain weight,grain length/width ratio,hulling rate,milling rate and head rice recovery.Seeds from the CNP-treated plants showed increase in amylose,starch and soluble sugar contents compared to controls.Strikingly,CNP treatment showed an average of 17.5%increase in yield per plant.Upon investigation to the molecular mechanism behind CNP induction of SAR,a significant downregulation of phytochrome B transcript was found.Decrease in perception of red wavelengths led to responses similar to SAR.Increase in plant’s internal temperature by 0.5ºC±0.1ºC was recorded after CNP treatment.We suggest that the internalized CNP aggregates may serve to absorb extra photons thereby increasing the internal temperature of plants.Phytochrome B accounts the hike in internal temperature and initiates a feed-back reduction of its own transcription.We suggest that moderate SAR is beneficial for rice plants to improve agronomic traits and yield.It presents a potential non-transgenic method for improving rice yield by CNP treatment.

Curcuma angustifolia ameliorates carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in HepG2 cells and Swiss albino rats

Objective:To determine the antioxidant and hepatoprotective potential of methanol extract of rhizome of Curcuma angustifolia(MECA)against carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced hepatic damage in vitro and in vivo.Methods:DPPH,ABTS and reducing power assays were performed to estimate the antioxidant effect of MECA.In vitro cytotoxicity of MECA against HepG2 cells was evaluated,whereas serum biochemical parameters and levels of antioxidative enzymes were measured in vivo and in vitro.Additionally,histopathological studies were estimated in order to investigate the hepatoprotective efficacy of MECA.Furthermore,GC-MS analysis of the extract was performed to identify the chemical components.Results:MECA exhibited strong antioxidant activity and attenuated CCl4-induced decrease in the viability of HepG2 cells.Additionally,MECA significantly restored the ALT,AST,ALP,TP and albumin level in comparison with the CCl4 group.After pre-treatment with MECA,effects of SOD,CAT and GSH were increased as well as lipid peroxidation amount decreased on CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in in vitro and in vivo model.Furthermore,histopathological observation confirmed that MECA reduced liver injury induced by CCl4 in rats.GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of bioactive constituents such as α-tocopherol(12.27%),phytol(7.61%),squalene(3.71%),β-sitosterol(2.19%),eugenol(2.59%),curcumenol(1.20%),β-elemene(1.00%)and eucalyptol(0.89%).Conclusions:MECA contains antioxidant and hepatoprotective constituents such asα-tocopherol,phytol,squalene and eugenol and exerts hepatoprotective effect both in vitro and in vivo.
