Diabetic factors associated with gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with type 2 diabetes

AIM: To determine whether gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are more frequent in type 2 diabetic patients and to examine which diabetic factors are associated with the symptoms. METHODS: consecutive subjects with diabetes and age-/gender-matched normal controls were recruited for this study. GI symptoms were assessed using a structured questionnaire divided into two GI symptomcategories (upper and lower GI symptoms), and consisting of 11 individual symptoms. In the diabetic patient group, diabetic complications including peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level and diabetes duration were evaluated. RESULTS: Among the total 190 diabetic patients and 190 controls enrolled, 137 (72%) of the diabetic patients and 116 (62%) of the controls had GI symptoms. In the diabetic patient group, 83 (43%) had upper GI symptoms and 110 (58%) lower GI symptoms; in the control group, 59 (31%) had upper GI symptoms and 104 (55%) lower GI symptoms. This difference between the two groups was significant for only the upper GI symptoms (P = 0.02). Among the diabetic factors, the HbA1c level was the only independent risk factor for upper GI symptoms in the multiple logistic regression analysis (odds ratio = 2.01, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-3.95). cONcLUSION: Type 2 diabetes was associated with an increased prevalence of upper GI symptoms and these symptoms appeared to be independently linked to poor glycemic control, as measured by the HbA1c levels.

Nanoscale ultrasound contrast agents,or nanobubbles,are being explored in preclinical applications ranging from vascular and cardiac imaging to targeted drug delivery in *** sub-micron particles are approximately 10x smaller than clinically available *** allows them to effectively traverse compromised physiological barriers and circulate for extended periods of *** various aspects of nanobubble behavior have been previously examined,their behavior in human whole blood has not yet been ***,herein we examined,for the first time,the short and long-term effects of blood components on nanobubble acoustic *** observed differences in the kinetics of backscatter from nanobubble suspensions in whole blood compared to bubbles in phosphate buffered saline(PBS),plasma,or red blood cell solutions(RBcs).Specifically,after introducing nanobubbles to fresh human whole blood,signal enhancement,or the magnitude of nonlinear ultrasound signal,gradually increased by 22.8±13.1%throughout our experiment,with peak intensity reached within 145 *** contrast,nanobubbles in PBS had a stable signal with negligible change in intensity(􀀀1.7±3.2%)over 8 *** the same conditions,microbubbles made with the same lipid formulation showed a􀀀56.8±6.1%decrease in enhancement in whole *** confocal,fluorescent,and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed attachment of the nanobubbles to the surface of RBcs,suggesting that direct interactions,or hitchhiking,of nanobubbles on RBcs in the presence of plasma may be a possible mechanism for the observed *** phenomenon could be key to extending nanobubble circulation time and has broad implications in drug delivery,where RBc interaction with nanoparticles could be exploited to improve delivery efficiency.

This paper proposes a precise localization algorithm for a quickly moving mobile *** order to localize a mobile robot with active beacon sensors,a relatively long time is needed,since the distance to the beacon is measured by transmitting time of the ultrasonic *** measurement time does not cause a high error rate when the mobile robot moves ***,with an increase of the mobile robot’s speed,the localization error becomes too high to use for accurate mobile robot ***,in this research into high speed mobile robot operations,instead of using two active beacons for localization,an active beacon and dual compass are utilized to localize the mobile *** new approach resolves the high localization error caused by the speed of the mobile *** performance of the precise localization algorithm is verified by comparing it to the conventional method through real-world experiments.

Amperometric Determination of Serum cholesterol with Pencil Graphite Rod

A cholesterol oxidase from Streptomycin sp. was immobilized onto pencil graphite rod and employed for amperometric determination of serum cholesterol. The method has the advantage over earlier amperometric methods that it requires low potential to generate electrons from H2O2, which does not allow ionization of serum substances. The optimum working conditions of amperometric determination were pH 6.8, 25?c and 30 s. The current measured was in proportion to cholesterol concentration ranging from 1.29×10-3 to 10.33×10-3 M. Minimum detection limit of the method was 0.09 ×10-3 M. Mean analytical recovery of added cholesterol (100 mg/dl and 200 mg/dl) in serum was 85.0% & 90.0% respectively. Within batch and between batch coefficients of variations were 1.59% & 4.15% respectively. A good correlation (r = 0.99) was obtained between serum cholesterol values by standard enzymic colorimetric method and the present method. No interference by metabolites was observed in the method. Effect of perturbations in coriolis and centrifugal forces on the non-linear stability of the libration point L4 in the restricted three body problem is studied when both the primaries are axis symmetric bodies (triaxial rigid bodies) and the bigger primary is a source of radiation. Moser’s conditions are utilized in this study by employing the iterative scheme of Henrard for transforming the Hamiltonian to the Birkhoff’s normal form with the help of double D’Alembert’s series. It is found that L4 is stable for all mass ratios in the range of linear stability except for the three mass ratios μc1, μc2 and μc3, which depend upon the perturbations ε1 and ε1 in the coriolis and centrifugal forces respectively and the parameters A1,A2,A3 and A4 which depend upon the semi-axes a1,b1,c1;a2,b2,c2 of the triaxial rigid bodies and p, the radiation parameter.

Objective:To study the effect of L-ascorbic acid supplementation on the in vitro development of buffalo embryos and evaluate the relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic,anti-apoptotic,and embryonic development-related ***:In experiment 1,we evaluated the effect of the addition of 0(control),50,and 100μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium on the developmental competence in terms of blastocyst rate and relative mRNA abundance of some pro-apoptotic(BAX,BID),anti-apoptotic(BcL-XL,McL1),and embryonic development(GDF9,BMP15)related *** on the results,we chose 50μM as the suitable dose of L-ascorbic acid for the subsequent *** further evaluated the blastocyst rates following the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro culture medium(experiment 2),and in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media(experiment 3).In all three experiments,the maturation and culture media devoid of L-ascorbic acid served as the control ***:The blastocyst rate after adding 50μM L-ascorbic acid to the in vitro maturation medium was significantly higher than the control group(Pcorbic acid exhibited a negative effect on the blastocyst *** blastocyst rates for embryos cultured in 50μM L-ascorbic acid in the in vitro culture medium alone and both in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media were significantly higher than their corresponding control groups(Pce of BAX significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 50μM L-ascorbic acid as compared with the control group(PcL1,it significantly decreased in blastocysts produced after the addition of 100μM L-ascorbic acid(Pconclusions:The supplementation of 50μM L-ascorbic acid to in vitro maturation and in vitro culture media supports in vitro embryonic development in buffaloes by improving developmental competence and altering the expression of apoptosis-related genes.

Green roofs are exposed to high winds and harsh environmental conditions that can degrade vegetation and erode substrate material,with negative consequences to ecosystem *** has been promoted as an effective substrate additive to enhance plant performance,but unprocessed biochars are susceptible to wind and water *** of granulated biochars or chemical dust suppressants are suggested as a means to mitigate biochar and substrate erosion;however,research on biochar type and chemical dust suppressant use on biochar and substrate erosion is *** is a crucial factor that influences substrate erosion,yet plant responses may vary with biochar type and chemical dust suppressant;thus,the effects of possible mitigation measures on biochar and substrate erosion are *** investigated the effects of surface-applied granulated and unprocessed biochars and an organic dust suppressant(Entac™)on biochar and substrate erosion on green roofs with Sedum album *** a native plant *** results show that 94%of unprocessed biochars were lost from green roofs after 2 years regardless of the Entac™amendment,likely due to the lightweight nature and fragmentation of biochar *** contrast,granulation of biochars reduced the biochar erosion and total substrate erosion by 74%and 39%,respec-tively,possibly due to enhanced biochar bulk density and particle size and improved moisture retention of biochar-amended ***,Sedum album better reduced biochar and substrate erosion than the native plant mix,likely due to rapid development of high vegetation cover that reduced wind exposure and enhanced substrate moisture *** conclude that applications of granulated biochars can substantially reduce biochar and sub-strate erosion on green roofs,improving green roof sustainability.

Information about extreme rainfall is lacking in regions of South America and *** study attempts to fill this scientific gap by use of a gridded parameterization for the stochastic weather generator,cLIGEN,to map depth-duration-frequency(DDF)*** of 500-year point-scale precipitation time series generated at each grid point allowed maps of return period precipitation to be produced for a se-lection of sixteen durations ranging from 10-min to 1-year and for nine return periods from 2 to 500 *** generalized extreme value(GEV)probability distribution was fitted for all durations,and given GEV quantiles,an interpolation method was applied to produce maps at 0.1° resolution that better resolve small-scale spatial climate *** addition to uncertainties related to GEV fitting,this study quantifies prediction intervals based on ground *** validation was important for identifying biases in cLIGEN,although uncertainties were not always satisfactorily defined due to sampling design and other *** daily/multi-day durations,100 stations with daily observations and ≥50-year records were selected for validation against the 0.1° cLIGEN map series,resulting in a median and average absolute error of 13%and 16%,*** sub-daily durations,prediction errors were larger *** analogy using available *** established the degree of bias in cUGEN for sub-daily durations,and three records in Brazil with high temporal resolutions were used to confirm that applied bias adjustments resulted in error ranges similar to the daily/multi-day *** atlas is freely available for study of extreme precipitation.
