Siponimod exerts neuroprotective effects on the retina and higher visual pathway through neuronal S1pR1 in experimental glaucoma

Temporal trends in concentrations of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in house dust from Birmingham in the United Kingdom

Tessellons, topography, and glaciations on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau

The Qinghai-Tibet plateau has developed into a vast fortress-like structure that has recently presented a barrier limiting the egress of moisture-bearing air masses. Lower sea levels also affected the climate. This paper examines their effects on the current evidence for the timing of past glaciations, and the development and evolution of permafrost. There are two theories regarding glaciation on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau （QTp）. Kuhle suggested that there was a major, unified ice-cap during the Last Glacial Maximum （LGM）, whereas major Chinese glaciologists and others have not found or verified reliable evidence for this per se. There have been limited glaciations during the last 1.1 Ma B.p. but with increasing dominance of permafrost including both primary and secondary tessellons infilled with rock, sand or loess. The East Asia Monsoon was absent in this area during the main LGM, starting at 〉30 ka B.p. on the plateau, with sufficient precipitation reappearing about 19 ka B.p. to produce ice-wedges. A weak Megathermal event took place between 8.5 and 6.0 ka B.p., followed by Neoglacial events exhibiting peak cold at 5.3-4.7 ka, 3.1-1.5 ka, and the Little Ice Age （LIA） after 0.7 ka. Subsequently, mean annual air temperature has increased by 4 ℃.

Factors Affecting Disease Risk perception and Self-Management Behaviors among Japanese Long-Term Overseas Volunteers

Introduction: Many overseas volunteers have worked in low and middle-income countries. However traveling abroad and staying in an unfamiliar environment with inadequate medical infrastructure exposes volunteers to a wide range of health risks. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationships among disease knowledge and symptoms, disease risk perception, and self-management skills. Methods: This was a questionnaire survey of 189 Japanese who were preparing to volunteer abroad. A factor analysis was conducted on 13 items (six general risk events and seven major diseases) of risk perception. Correlation analysis was performed between the identified risk perception factors and disease knowledge and symptoms. Risk perception scores by factors from the seven disease items were compared between the Self-management Score (SMS) group and disease knowledge and risk of symptoms group, using T-tests. St. Luke’s International University Ethics Committee (19-A092) approved this study. Results: Many participants expected to suffer from digestive diseases (69.3%) and dermatitis (55%) in the field. On the other hand, few expected high risk of malaria (26.5%) or dengue fever (36%). Factor analysis yielded robust factor loadings creating a “Dread” and an “Unknown” factor accounting for 62.2% of total variance. Strong correlation was not found between SMS and disease risk perception. The occurrence of 28 pharmaceuticals and personal care products(ppCps)was investigated in 17 surface water samples(rivers,canals,and lagoons),12 groundwater samples(wells and boreholes,which can also be consumed for drinking)and 8 drinking water samples(bottles and sachets)during dry and rainy seasons in Lagos state,*** most prevalent compound detected in all samples was amoxicillin(an antibiotic)at median concentrations of 1614,238 and 358 ng/L in surface water,ground water and drinking water,*** is of concern due to potential impact on development of antibioticresistant microbial *** frequently-detected compounds include acetaminophen,nicotine,ibuprofen,and codeine with detection frequencies of more than 70%.Investigation of seasonal variability revealed that glyburide,caffeine,naproxen and diclofenac concentrations were significantly(ppatterns of pharmaceuticals among the local *** concentrations in drinking water samples were used to assess inadvertent human exposure to ppCps in Nigerian *** revealed average daily exposures of 81,14 and 3 ngƩppCps/kg BW/day via drinking borehole,sachet water and bottled water,*** there exists no health-based limit value(HBLV)for chronic exposure to mixtures of ppCps,our results raise concern and warrant further investigation of the potential health implications of such unintended ppCps exposure.

Vegetation productivity responses to drought on tribal lands in the four corners region of the Southwest USA

For more than a decade, the Four Comers Region has faced extensive and persistent drought conditions that have impacted vegetation communities and local water resources while exacerbating soil erosion. These persistent droughts threaten ecosystem services, agriculture, and livestock activities, and expose the hypersensitivity of this region to inter-annual climate variability and change. Much of the intermountain Western United States has sparse climate and vegetation monitoring stations, making fine-scale drought assessments difficult. Remote sensing data offers the opportunity to assess the impacts of the recent droughts on vegetation productivity across these areas. Here, we propose a drought assessment approach that integrates climate and topographical data with remote sensing vegetation index time series. Multisensor Normalized Difference Vegetation Index （NDVI） time series data from 1989 to 2010 at 5.6 km were analyzed to characterize the vegetation productivity changes and responses to the ongoing drought. A multi-linear regression was applied to metrics of vegetation productivity derived from the NDVI time series to detect vegetation productivity, an ecosystem service proxy, and changes. The results show that around 60.13% of the study area is observing a general decline of greenness （p 〈 0.05）, while 3.87% show an unexpected green up, with the remaining areas showing no consistent change. Vegetation in the area show a significant positive correlation with elevation and precipitation gradients. These results, while, confirming the region＇s vegetation decline due to drought, shed further light on the future directions and challenges to the region＇s already stressed ecosystems. Whereas the results provide additional insights into this isolated and vulnerable region, the drought assessment approach used in this study may be adapted for application in other regions where surfacebased climate and vegetation monitoring record is spatially and temporally limited.

Examining the retinal tissue has the potential to provide a unique method and technique to quantify Alzheimer’s disease-related changes in participants at various stages of the *** this metaanalysis,we aimed to investigate the association of various optical coherence tomography parameters with Alzheimer’s disease and whether retinal measurements can be used to diffe rentiate between Alzheimer’s disease and control *** databases including Google Schola r,Web of Science,and pubMed were systematically searched for published articles that evaluated retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and retinal microvascular network in Alzheimer’s disease and control ***-three studies(5850 participants,including 2249 Alzheimer’s disease patients and 3601controls) were included in this *** to controls,Alzheimer’s disease patients had a significantly lower global retinal nerve fiber layer thickness(standardized mean difference [SMD]=-0.79,95% confidence intervals [CI]:-1.03 to-0.54,p paramete rs,values measured by optical coherence tomography were significantly lower in Alzheimer’s disease than controls for macular thickness(pooled SMD:-0.44,95% CI:-0.67 to-0.20,p=0.0003),foveal thickness(pooled SMD=-0.39,95% CI:-0.58 to-0.19,p plexiform layer(SMD=-1.26,95% CI:-2.24 to-0.27,p=0.01) and macular volume(pooled SMD=-0.41,95% CI-0.76 to-0.07,p=0.02).Analysis using optical coherence tomography angiography parameters revealed mixed results between Alzheimer’s disease and *** vessel density(pooled SMD=-0.42,95% CI:-0.68 to-0.17,p=0.0001) and deep vessel density(pooled SMD=-0.46,95% CI:-0.75 to-0.18,p=0.001) were found to be thinner in Alzheimer’s disease patients whereas the foveal avascular zone(SMD=0.84,95% CI:0.17-1.51,p=0.01) was larger in *** density and thickness of variou
