Growth hormone releasing peptide 2 reverses anorexia associated with chemotherapy with 5-fluoruracil in colon cancer cell-bearing mice

The cancer-associated anorexia-cachexia syndrome is observed in 80% of patients with advanced-stage cancer, and is one of the major obstacles in chemo- therapy. Ghrelin is a orexigenic hormone that has been proposed to prevent anorexia. Aim of the study was to determine whether the addition of the ghrelin agonist growth hormone releasing peptide 2 (GHRp-2) to cytotoxic therapy with 5-fluoruracil (5-FU) prevents the anorexia associated with chemotherapy in cancer cachectic mice. Thirty-three BALB/c female tumourbearing mice were randomized to receive a solution containing: (a) placebo; (b) GHRp-2; (c) 5-FU; or (d) 5-FU + GHRp-2. Ten BALB/c no tumour-bearing mice received placebo solution. Food intake and survival were checked. Six hours after the drug injection the cumulative food intake was signifi cantly increased in mice treated with the combination of 5-FU + GHRp-2 versus the 5-FU alone (p = 0.0096). On day 3, the cumulative food intake of mice treated with GHRp-2,5-FU and 5-FU + GHRp-2 signifi cantly increased com- pared with naive and vehicle groups (p = 0.0007, p = 0.0038 and p = 0.0166, respectively). The median survival time was longer in 5-FU + GHRp-2 treated mice than in those with 5-FU, although it was not signifi cant (18 d versus 15.5 d, p = 0.7). For the fi rst time, we demonstrated that the addition of GHRp-2 to cytotoxic therapy with 5-FU improved appetite in tumour-bearing mice with anorexia/cachexia syndrome in early stage. These data suggest that GHRp-2 may improve the effi cacy of therapy and the quality of life of cancer patients thank to the amelioration of their nutritional state.

Rooting of pinus radiata somatic embryos: factors involved in the success of the process

In vitro conditions of the culture media, plant growth regulators and culture containers may cause anatomical and physiological changes that have negative effects on rooting and ex vitro acclimatization of somatic plantlets. The control of these factors could contribute to the improvement of somatic embryogenesis systems in conifers, especially in pines. The influence of macronutrient concentrations, explant type and culture containers in pinus radiata D. Don in vitro somatic embryo rooting were analyzed. The highest rooting percentage was observed using half-strength macronutrient concentrations, complete micronutrients and vitamins of Quoirin and Lepoivre medium. Although the use of glass culture vessels was the best to increase the efficiency of the somatic embryogenesis process in terms of rooting, the use of ventilated containers resulted in a significant increase in the percentage of plants able to be planted in the field.

numerical simulation of solidification of liquid aluminum alloy flowing on cooling slope

Dielectric relaxation and magneto-electric characteristics of lead-free double perovskite: Sm2niMnO6

The polycrystalline sample of a double perovskite, Sm2niMnO6 was synthesized by a solid-state reaction route. From the X-ray structural study, it is found that the structure of the material is monoclinic with lattice parameters: a = 4.1750(63) ?, b = 7.6113(63) ?, c = 5.9896(63) ?, and β = 112.70°. These parameters are very close to and consistent with those of such type of materials. The dielectric, impedance, AC conductivity, and electrical modulus properties of the sample were studied in the temperature range of 25–300℃ and the frequency range of 1 kHz–1 MHz. Typical relaxor behavior observed in the dielectric studies was confirmed by Vogel–Fulcher fitting. From the nyquist plots, the temperature dependent contribution of grain and grain boundary effect was confirmed. The non-Debye type of relaxation was found using the complex impedance spectroscopy. The magnetic study revealed that the sample had paramagnetic behavior at room temperature. Magneto-electric(ME) coefficient was obtained by changing DC bias magnetic field. This type of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric compound may be useful for high-temperature applications.

nonlinear parametric interactions in ion-implanted semiconductor plasmas having strain-dependent dielectric constants

We report nonlinear parametric interactions using a hydrodynamic model of ion-implanted semiconductor plasmas having strain-dependent dielectric constants（SDDC）. High-dielectric-constant materials are technologically important because of their nonlinear properties. We find that the third-order susceptibility varies in the range 10^-14--10^-12m^2·V^-2 for ion-implanted semiconductor plasmas, which is in good agreement with previous results. It is found that the presence of SDDC in ion-implanted semiconductor plasma modifies the characteristic properties of the material.

Microfluidics has demonstrated high versatility in the analysis of in-flow particles and can even achieve mechanical properties measurements of biological cells by applying hydrodynamic ***,there is currently no available technique that enables the direct measurement and tracking of these hydrodynamic forces acting on a flowing *** this work,we introduce a novel method for the direct measurement of the hydrodynamic force actuating on an in-flow particle based on the analysis of the induced resonance changes of suspended microchannel resonators(SMRs).This hydrodynamic force sensitivity depends on the device used;therefore,we considered the geometry and materials to advance this dependency on the SMR resonance frequency.

Conversion of an atomic to a molecular argon ion and low pressure argon relaxation

The dominant process in relaxation of DC glow discharge between two plane parallel electrodes in argon at pressure 200 pa is analyzed by measuring the breakdown time delay and by analytical and numerical models. By using the approx- imate analytical model it is found that the relaxation in a range from 20 to 60 ms in afterglow is dominated by Ar＋ ions, produced by atomic-to-molecular conversion of Ar＋ ions in the first several milliseconds after the cessation of the discharge. This conversion is confirmed by the presence of double-Gaussian distribution for the formative time delay, as well as con- version maxima in a set of memory curves measured in different conditions. Finally, the numerical one-dimensional （1D） model for determining the number densities of dominant particles in stationary DC glow discharge and two-dimensional （2D） model for the relaxation are used to confirm the previous assumptions and to determine the corresponding collision and transport coefficients of dominant species and processes.

Size Dependent Heat Conduction in One-Dimensional Diatomic Lattices

We study the size dependency of heat conduction in one-dimensional diatomic FpU-β lattices and establish that for low dimensional material,contribution from optical phonons is found more effective to the thermal conductivity and enhance heat transport in the thermodynamic limit n →∞.For the finite size,thermal conductivity of 1D diatomic lattice is found to be lower than 1D monoatomic chain of the same size made up of the constituent particle of the diatomic *** the present 1D diatomic chain,obtained value of power divergent exponent of thermal conductivity0.428±0.001 and diffusion exponent 1.2723 lead to the conclusions that increase in the system size,increases the thermal conductivity and existence of anomalous energy *** numerical data supports our findings.

On The Role of preparative parameters in Growing nanocrystalline pbS Thin Films by Liquid phase Chemical Bath Deposition

A liquid phase chemical bath deposition(LpCBD)method for deposition of pbS thin films is *** growth kinetics and reaction mechanism have been *** the deposition,triethanolamine complex of lead acetate was allowed to react with aqueous thiourea *** micro-slides were used as the *** deposition of pbS films was carried out under different growth parameters such as temperature,time,and reaction *** growth rate,under different conditions,was measured in terms of a terminal layer thickness and the possible reaction kinetics and mechanism is *** optimum values of the parameters to produce good quality films are 60 min,80℃and 10.5±*** EDS analysis showed that the film stoichiometry is dependent on the reaction pH and the films tend to be almost stoichiometric in high alkaline environment(>10.5).The pbS deposits appeared smooth,tightly adherent,uniform and reflecting with blackish-grey *** XRD studies showed crystalline cubic type of structure with preferred orientation along(200)*** calculated d-values,intensities of reflections and lattice parameter have excellent match with that of the JCpD *** crystallite size is found to be few tens of *** surface morphology revealed by SEM showed that the crystallites are randomly oriented and are of different shapes and *** of the crystallites appeared smaller and spherical in shape whereas,growth of some elongated irregular crystallites;bit larger in size and differing in shapes,have also been favoured.

Computer Simulation Study of Thermal Conduction in 1D Chains of Anharmonic Oscillators

In this work thermal conduction in one-dimensional （1D） chains of anharmonic oscillators are studied using computer simulation. The temperature profile, heat flux and thermal conductivity are investigated for chain length n = 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600. In the computer simulation anharmonicity is introduced due to Fermi-pasta- U1am-β （FpU-β） model For substrate interaction, an onsite potential due to Frenkel-Kontorova （FK） model has been used. numerical simulations demonstrate that temperature gradient scales behave as n-1 linearly with the relation J = 0.1765/n. For the thermal conductivity K, Kn to n obey the linear relation of the type Kn = 0.8805n. It is shown that thermal transport is dependent on phonon-phonon interaction as web as phonon-lattice interaction. The thermal conductivity increases linearly with increase inanharmonicity and predicts relation κ =0.133 ＋ 0.804β. It is also concluded that for higher value of the strength of the onsite potential system tends to a thermal insulator.
