Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HcM), the most common single-gene cardiovascular disease, is associated with increased risk for arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. The hemodynamic changes known to occur during pregnancy can exacerbate heart failure and arrhythmias in women with HcM. We present a 30-year-old woman with HcM to illustrate the benefits of multidisciplinary team management of severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (peak gradient >100 mmHg) for optimal maternal and fetal outcomes.

Although they are the largest taxonomic group of animals, relatively few insects have been examined for symbiotic relationships with micro-organisms. However, this is rapidly changing because of the potential for examination of the natural insectmicrobe-lignocellulose interactions to provide insights for biofuel technology. Micro-organisms associated with lignocellulose-consuming insects often facilitate the digestion of the recalcitrant plant diet; therefore these microbial communities may be mined for novel lignocellulose-degrading microbes, or for robust and inexpensive biocatalysts necessary for economically feasible biofuel production from lignocellulose. These insect-microbe interactions are influenced by the ecosystem and specific lignocellulose diet, and appre- ciating the whole ecosystem-insect-microbiota-lignocellulose as a natural biorefinery provides a rich and diverse framework from which to design novel industrial processes. One such natural biorefinery, the Tipula abdominalis larvae in riparian ecosystems, is reviewed herein with applications for biochemical processes and overcoming challenges involved in conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuel ethanol. From the dense and diverse T. abdominalis larval hindgut microbial community, a cellulolytic bacterial isolate, 27c64, demonstrated enzymatic activity toward many model plant polymers and also produced a bacterial antibiotic. 27c64 was co-cultured with yeast in fermentation of pine to ethanol, which allowed for a 20% reduction of commercial enzyme. In this study, a micro-organism from a lignocellulose-consuming insect was successfully applied for improvement of biomass-to-biofuel technology.

OUTPOST平台是建造在被航天飞机废弃的外贮箱(ET)上的商用空间平台,这种商用平台于1996年发射入轨后可为进入近地轨道操作提供廉价的途径。平台在其工作寿命期间将与几种飞行器交会。本文介绍一种基于GPS的交会对接(RVD)系统,它利用业已成熟的技术即可支持所有计划中的飞行任务的测控操作。该系统的工作分三个阶段:交会前,两飞行器利用GPS作为它们的标准导航工具;在交会过程中,两飞行器利用差分GPS测量距离和距离变化率;在最后接近阶段,利用目标飞行器产生的类似于GPS的信号直接测量两飞行器之间的距离、距离变化率和相对姿态。整个系统要分别利用几种独立发展的GPS应用系统,包括基于GPS的空间导航,相对位置确定,姿态确定,载波相位跟踪,以及伪基准信号转发等。

Variability of the useful life of reservoirs in tropical locations:A case study from the Burdekin Falls Dam, Australia

Large dam construction for irrigation, hydropower, water supply, and flood control in tropical to subtropical areas increased markedly after 1950. Many of the dams built during this period have filled with sediment and no longer perform to their original design specifications; in many cases, forecast dam life was greatly overestimated. This study investigates the useful life of Burdekin Falls Dam(BFD), northeastern Australia and compares the findings with other tropical reservoirs. Using two independent methods it is estimated that between 61 and 65 million m3 of sediment has been deposited in the reservoir over the 24 years of operation through 2011. This sediment volume equates to an average of0.15% of capacity lost per year since construction was completed. If current sediment loads/climate regimes persist, reservoir capacity will be reduced by 50% after 345 years. However, the useful life of the BFD reduces to just 276 years when drawdown data are considered; these data show reservoir use would be affected once 40% of storage was filled with sediment, with a 60% drawdown return period of 1 in 15 years. When compared to similar large tropical to sub-tropical reservoirs, the BFD has a slightly longer reservoir useful life than dams in India and a much longer half-life than for both similar-sized and larger dams in china, Brazil, and Iran. Properties of the BFD that promote a longer useful life include a lower trap efficiency, relatively low annual sediment load delivered to the reservoir, limited sediment deposition behind the dam wall(and uniform distribution of deposited sediment), and the export of highly turbid annual floodwaters before settling and deposition of any remaining sediment within the reservoir.
