Legumes are a good source of calories, protein and mineral nutrients for human nutrition and health. In this study, the edible leaves and grain of 27 field-grown cowpea genotypes were assessed for trace elements and macronutrient den-sity at Manga in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Ghana in 2005 and 2006, using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The genotypes differed markedly in their accumulation of trace elements and major nutrients in edible leaves and grain. Except for P, the concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, S and Na were much higher in edible cowpea leaves than grain in 2005. A similar pattern was observed for Ca, Mg, S, Na in 2006. However, more dramatic variations were found in the micronutrient concentrations between edible cowpea leaves and grain. The levels of the trace elements Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and b were sometimes 2- to 20-fold greater in leaves than grain of cowpea. Furthermore, there were strong genotypic differences in mineral density of cowpea leaves and grain. For the major nutrients, for example, IT93K-2045-29 and IT90K-59 accumulated greater concentrations of P, K, Ca, S and Na in both edible leaves and grain in 2006, while ITH98-46, which showed the least macronutrient density, exhibited the highest concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and b in edible leaves, as well as Fe, Cu and Mn in grain. These results have implications for cowpea breeding, as well as for human nutrition and health.

预置管法静力触探实施水泥搅拌桩完整检测时存在桩体损伤问题。基于模型桩实验和数值模拟方法研究预置管法静力触探检测水泥搅拌桩损伤控制方法。模型桩实验表明,插管直径影响探头的贯入轨迹,插管强度影响检测结果的灵敏度;数值模拟显示,静力触探贯入插管损伤桩体的程度与插管直径、管壁厚度、桩体强度有关,与贯入深度、插管强度无关;静力触探贯入引起的桩体等效塑性应变与插管的直径大小、管壁厚度负相关;引起的损伤区范围与桩体龄期和插管直径负相关,最大半径随插管直径增大近似为双曲线趋势衰减。现场检测时,在试桩阶段依据数值模拟预先确定插管尺寸的有效范围,由现场试验选择确定工程检测用插管的尺寸,达到控制检测损伤桩体完整性的目标。

biltong is a dried ready to eat meat product that is produced and consumed to a large extent in botswana. A study was undertaken with the objective of determining the microbial quality and isolating and identifying the predominant bacteria and fungi associated with the small scale production of biltong by local butcheries. The physico-chemical characteristics of the commercially prepared beef samples were characterized to determine if they had a bearing on the microbial quality. Electron microscopy was used to characterize microbial colonization of the biltong. The total viable count of the biltong samples were found to range from 2 - 7 log10 cfu/g with a mean plate count of 8.9 × 105 cfu/g. About 42% of the samples had counts higher than 105 cfu/g, which is the recommended upper limit of acceptability as prescribed by the Public Health Laboratory Service guidelines. bacteria from the genera Staphylococcus and bacillus were found to be the predominant taxa associated with the biltong, a trend consistent with findings in previous studies on biltong. A total of 14 species were identified from the genus Staphylococcus with 20% of all bacterial strains identified as Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Four biltong samples were found to comprise bacillus cereus, a well known food-borne pathogen associated with food poisoning. The predominant moulds and yeasts were found to conform to findings from previous studies conducted on intermediate moisture meat products with the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium and Candida being common. The predominant fungal species were Candida catenulate, Candida pararugosa, Aspergillus restrictus and Aspergillus niger. Some strains of Aspergillus niger are known to produce mycotoxins which compounds the potential risk associated with biltong as a ready to eat meat product.

Introduction because of the increasing use of phosphate in industries worldwide,especially in Togo,it is interesting to investigate the potential radioactivity exposure of phosphate ores,especially in the one being exploring in Togo *** and methods The contents of natural radionuclides(40K,226Ra,232Th,235U and 238U)were assessed in phosphate soil samples from Kpogamé,Dagbati and Kpéméin the maritime region of Togo by using gamma spectrometry-based broad Energy Germanium detector(bEGe6530).Since no study was made prior to the exploitation,the samples from the control area of Anfoin-Kpota far away from the three others were considered as *** and discussion The results are discussed and compared with the data from other *** activity concentration of 40K,226Ra,232Th,235U and 238U are between(59.45 and 129.99),(20.19 and 779.93),(16.81 and 121.42),(2.26 and 52.03)and(16.66 and 841.14)bq kg^(−1),*** values obtained shows that the exploitation sites(Dagbati and Kpogamé)and treatment site(Kpémé)have a very high level of radioactivity than the control area(Anfoin-Kpota).The Kpogaméand Dagbati exploitation and Kpéméwaste discharging phosphate deposit sites were found to have higher activity concentration than many others exploited phosphate sedimentary deposits around the *** average annual effective dose of the above studied sites is 0.36,0.24 and 0.48 mSv year−1,*** value related to the discharge waste site is about 2%of the 1.0 mSv year−1 recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection as the maximum annual dose to the *** The obtained result of both radioactivity and radiological level in the studied areas will be considered as a pre-operational baseline to estimate the possible radiological impacts due to mining and processing phosphate industrial activities.

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a group of Mexican Mestizo patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC) and to compare this group with patients with cirrhosis secondary to other causes (disease controls). METHODS: Patients with CC, diagnosed between January, 1990 and April, 2005, were included in a retrospective study. Patients with cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis C, alcohol abuse or autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) served as disease controls. RESULTS: A total of 134 patients with CC were analyzed. Disease controls consisted of 81 patients with chronic hepatitis C, 33 with alcohol abuse and 20 with AIH. The median age of patients with CC was 57 years (range, 16-87); 83 (61.9%) patients were female; 53 (39.6%) were Child A, 65 (48.5%) Child b, and 16 (11.9%) were Child C cirrhosis. The prevalence of MS (29.1% vs 6%; P besity (16.4% vs 8.2%; P = 0.04) and T2DM (40% vs 22.4%; P = 0.013) was higher in CC patients than in disease controls. There were no differences in sex, age or liver function tests between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MS, obesityand T2DM were higher in patients with CC than in patients with cirrhosis secondary to others causes. Our findings support the hypothesis that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) plays an under-recognized role in CC.

Productivity of Soil Fertilised with Fermented Calliandra, Gliricidia and Leucaena browses and Maize Forage

Fermented Callliandra, Gliricidia and Leucaena browses and maize material （milk stage） were applied to the soil to determine their effect on soil productivity. Hopi Red Dye Amaranthus （Amaranthus cruentus） was used as the test crop. Its DM yield was determined. The browse materials had higher total N and narrower C：N ratio than the maize material. Calliandra material had higher levels of insoluble fiber （ADF）, fiber bound N （ADFN） and lignin. Application of the browse and maize materials raised C, N, and C：N ratio of the soil in which they were applied compared to the control soil. The treated soils maintained higher levels of C and N and a narrower C：N ratio up to the third crop. Amaranthus DM yield was highest （P 〈 0.05） with browse treatments. Treatment with maize material did not have DM yield advantage over the control soil. Treatments with browse materials could have given higher yields because the materials had more N and fermentation could not only have increased the proportion of soluble N, but also degradability of the materials, thus making the N and other nutrients in the fermented materials available for plant growth. DM yield was highest （P 〈_ 0.05） with the first and third crops but lowest （P 〈 0.05） with the second crop. Plant growth in the second crop could have coincided with high demand for the N by the soil micro-organisms decomposing the added materials. During the third crop, decomposition of the readily degradable components of the added materials could have been complete and the N became available for plant growth. DM yield dropped （P 〈 0.05） with the fourth crop as the available N could have been depleted from the soil for plant growth.

Graphene nanostructures are promising candidates for future nanoelectronics and solid-state quan- tum information technology. In this review we provide an overview of a number of electron transport experiments on etched graphene nanostructures. We briefly revisit the electronic properties and the transport characteristics of bulk, i.e., two-dimensional graphene. The fabrication techniques for making graphene nanostructures such as nanoribbons, single electron transistors and quantum dots, mainly based on a dry etching ＂paper-cutting＂ technique are discussed in detail. The limitations of the current fabrication technology are discussed when we outline the quantum transport properties of the nanostructured devices. In particular we focus here on transport through graphene nanoribbons and constrictions, single electron transistors as well as on graphene quantum dots including dou- ble quantum dots. These quasi-one-dimensional （nanoribbons） and quasi-zero-dimensional （quantum dots） graphene nanostructures show a clear route of how to overcome the gapless nature of graphene allowing the confinement of individual carriers and their control by lateral graphene gates and charge detectors. In particular, wo emphasize that graphene quantum dots and double quantum dots are very promising systems for spin-based solid state quantum computation, since they are believed to have exceptionally long spin coherence times due to weak spin-orbit coupling and weak hyperflne interaction in graphene.
