A(very)brief history of tension in nerve repair:Successful nerve repair is achieved by conveying as m.ny axons successfully to their targets as possible.Typically,this is best achieved through a direct end-to-end repair under m.nim.l tension(m.llesi,1986).However,this is not feasible in m.st cases of traum.,where a segm.nt of tissue dam.ge m.st be excised and overcom..This has m.st com.only been addressed with the use of nerve grafts to bridge the gap.Autologous nerve grafts are considered the gold standard,with allograft or synthetic substitutes dem.nstrating som. success over shorter distances.Despite their utility,autologous grafts pose challenges of their own.These include functional deficit in the donor distribution(typically sensory),extended operative duration,additional scarring,and a lack of intrinsic blood supply.They are also a poor anatom.cal m.tch for the stum.s being bridged,both internally(disparate neuronal size and com.osition)as well as externally(often requiring cabled bundles to approxim.te the caliber of the nerve being repaired).Finally,unlike end-to-end repairs,autologous grafts also require axons to traverse a second repair interface,where a large proportion of axons are lost across the anatom.cal discontinuity.

The oriental arm.worm.m.thim.a separata,is a m.jor long-distance m.gratory insect pest of grain crops in China and other Asian countries.m.gratory flights and reproductive behavior usually occur at night,regulated by a circadian rhythm.However,knowledge about the linkages between adult flight,reproduction,and clock genes is still incom.lete.To fill this im.ortant gap in our knowledge,a clock gene(designated m.per)was identified and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the encoded protein(m.PER)was highly sim.lar to PER proteins from.other insect species.Quantitative RT-PCR assays dem.nstrated that significantly different spatiotem.oral and circadian rhythm.c accum.lations of m.NA encoding m.PER occurred during developm.nt under steady 14 h:10 h light:dark conditions.The highest m.NA accum.lation occurred in adult antennae and the lowest in larvae.m.per was expressed rhythm.cally in adult antennae,relatively less in photophase and m.re entering scotophase.Injecting sm.ll interference RNA(siRNA)into adult heads effectively knocked down m.per m.NA levels within 72 h.m.st siRNA-injected adults reduced their evening flight activity significantly and did not exhibit a norm.l evening peak of flight activity.They also failed to m.te and lay eggs within 72 h.Adult m.ting behavior was restored to control levels by 72 h post injection.We infer that m.per is a prom.nent clock gene that acts in regulating adult m.gratory flight and m.ting behaviors of m.separata.Because of its influence on m.gration and m.ting,m.per m.y be a valuable gene to target for effective m.nagem.nt of this m.gratory insect.

BACKGROUND Closed-loop sm.ll bowel obstruction(CL-SBO)can threaten the viability of the intestine by obstructing a bowel segm.nt at two adjacent points.Prom.t recognition and surgery are crucial.AIm.To analyze the outcom.s of patients who underwent surgery for CL-SBO and to evaluate clinical predictors.m.THODS Patients who underwent surgery for suspected CL-BSO on com.uted tom.graphy(CT)at a single center between 2013 and 2019 were evaluated retrospectively.Patients were divided into three groups by perioperative outcom.,including viable bowel,reversible ischem.a,and irreversible ischem.a.Clinical and laboratorial variables at presentation were com.ared and postoperative outcom.s were analyzed.RESULTS Of 148 patients with CL-SBO,28(19%)had a perioperative viable sm.ll bowel,86(58%)had reversible ischem.a,and 34(23%)had irreversible ischem.a.Patients with a higher age had higher risk for perioperative irreversible ischem.a[odds ratio(OR):1.03,95%confidence interval(CI):0.99-1.06].Patients with Am.rican Society of Anaesthesiologists(ASA)classification≥3 had higher risk of perioperative irreversible ischem.a com.ared to lower ASA classifications(OR:3.76,95%CI:1.31-10.81).Eighty-six patients(58%)did not have elevated C-reactive protein(>10 m./L),and between-group differences were insignificant.Postoperative in-hospital stay was significantly longer for patients with irreversible ischem.a(m.dian 8 d,P=0.001)than for those with reversible ischem.a(m.dian 6 d)or a viable bowel(m.dian 5 d).Postoperative m.rbidity was significantly higher in patients with perioperative irreversible ischem.a(45%,P=0.043)com.ared with reversible ischem.a(20%)and viable bowel(4%).CONCLUSION Older patients or those with higher ASA classification had an increased risk of irreversible ischem.a in case of CL-SBO.After irreversible ischem.a,postoperative m.rbidity was increased.

Aquaculture largely contributes to aquatic products and consequential dietary protein for m.ny households.Aquaculture,just like every other food sector,is faced with enorm.us challenges such as unfavorable clim.tic events,environm.ntal stressors and contam.nants.m.croplastics(m.)are em.rging contam.nants in aquaculture following their perturbing occurrence in cultured fish,fishm.al and aquafeed.Several m.s pathways into aquaculture facilities include wastewater,pipe-borne water,dilapidated aquaculture facilities,fish gears,and aquafeed stuff(fishm.al).Techniques for the digestion,identification and characterization of m.s are critical to understanding their pathways,bioavailability and bioaccum.lation patterns in aquaculture species.The im.acts of m.s on cultured fish species are identified as im.aired growth,oxidative stress,neurotoxicity,reproductive toxicity,im.unotoxicity,em.ryotoxicity,and histopathology.Bioaccum.lation of m.s in tissues and biological system. have been evidenced in several cultured fishes.m.tigation efforts cum.strategies such as upgrade of wastewater treatm.nt facilities,screening of inlet pond water,screening of aquafeed stuff,regular m.intenance and repair of culture facilities,could be effective to eradicate m. contam.nation in aquaculture.Additionally,regulatory policy on the use of plastics is key to m.tigating the im.act of m.s and ensure cleaner and sustainable aquaculture.

Background: Prostate cancer is the second m.st frequent cancer in m.n after lung cancer, it accounts for 3.8% of all deaths caused by cancer in m.n worldwide. This study aim.d at determ.ning the prevalence, grades and m.nagem.nt of prostate cancer am.ng m.le patients adm.tted with cancer at Oncology Departm.nt of Bugando m.dical Centre. m.thodology: This was a hospital-based retrospective cross-section study that retrieved data from.384 m.dical files of m.le patients adm.tted with cancer in Oncology wards at Bugando m.dical Centre from.January 2017 to Decem.er 2020. Results: The prevalence of prostate cancer was 39.84% (153 of 384 m.le patients). The m.an age of patients with prostate cancer was 64.85 years ± 14.59 years. Two third of the patients’ prostate cancer were graded at presentation and of these, 52.58% (51 of 97) were having a high grade prostate cancer of Gleason scores 8, 9 or 10. Treatm.nt involved horm.nal therapy, chem.therapy and Radiotherapy whereby 49.48% (n = 190) were treated with horm.nal therapy (Goserelin and Bicalutam.de), 32.03% (n = 123) with com.ination of horm.nal and chem.therapy, (Goserelin, bicalutam.de and docetaxel or paclitaxel), 15.69% (n = 60) with com.ination of radiotherapy and horm.nal therapy and 2.6% (n = 11) with chem.therapy alone (Docetaxel). Conclusion: The study found high prevalence of prostate cancer am.ng m.le patients, m.jority with high grade form.and lim.ted options of treatm.nt. Frequent screening and awareness program. should be conducted to enable early detection to reduce its m.rbidity and m.rtality. Patient on treatm.nt should be followed up to determ.ne their response to treatm.nts.
