The propagation of coherent light in multimode optical fibers results in a speckled output that is both complex and sensitive to environmental *** properties can be a powerful tool for sensing,as small perturbations lead to significant changes in the output of the ***,the mechanism to encode spatially resolved sensing information into the speckle pattern and the ability to extract this information are thus far *** this paper,we demonstrate that spatially dependent mode coupling is crucial to achieving spatially resolved *** leverage machine learning to quantitatively extract the spatially resolved sensing information from three fiber types with dramatically different characteristics and demonstrate that the fiber with the highest degree of spatially dependent mode coupling provides the greatest accuracy.

The oil sands in Northern Alberta are the largest oil sands in the world,providing an important economic resource for the Canadian energy *** extraction of petroleum in the oil sands begins with the addition of hot water to the bituminous sediment,generating oil sands process-affected water(OSPW),which is acutely toxic to *** of litres of OSPW are stored on oil sands mining leased sites in man-made reservoirs called tailings *** the volume of OSPW increases,concerns arise regarding the reclamation and eventual release of this water back into the *** is composed of a complex and heterogeneous mix of components that vary based on factors such as company extraction techniques,age of the water,location,and bitumen ore ***,the effective remediation of OSPW requires the consideration of abiotic and biotic constituents within it to understand short and long term effects of treatments *** review summarizes selected chemicals and organisms in these waters and their interactions to provide a holistic perspective on the physiochemical and microbial dynamics underpinning OSPW.

Optical coherence tomography(OCT)has moved to the forefront of imaging modalities in the management of glaucoma and retinal *** is modifying how glaucoma and glaucoma progression are diagnosed clinically and augmenting our understanding of the *** provides multiple parameters from various anatomic areas for glaucoma diagnosis,evaluation of treatment efficacy,and progression *** the use of multiple parameters has increased the likelihood of detecting early structural changes,diagnosing glaucoma in early stages is often challenging when the damages are subtle and not apparent on OCT scans,in addition to the fact that assessment of OCT parameters often yields conflicting *** promising approach is to combine multiple individual parameters into a composite parameter from the same test to improve diagnostic accuracy,sensitivity,and *** review presents current evidence regarding the value of spectral domain OCT composite parameters in diagnosing early glaucoma.

In this study,we provide evidence that oil sands process-affected waters(OSPW)contain factors that activate the antimicrobial and proinflammatory responses of immune ***,using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line,we establish the bioactivity of two different OSPW samples and their isolated ***,we directly compared the bioactivity of two pilot scale demonstration pit lake(DPl)water samples,which included expressed water from treated tailings(termed the before water capping sample;BWC)as well as an after water capping(AWC)sample consisting of a mixture of expressed water,precipitation,upland runoff,coagulated OSPW and added *** inflammatory(*** activating)bioactivity was associated with the AWC sample and its organic fraction(OF),whereas the BWC sample had reduced bioactivity that was primarily associated with its inorganic fraction(IF).Overall,these results indicate that at non-toxic exposure doses,the RAW 264.7 cell line serves as an acute,sensitive and reliable biosensor for the screening of inflammatory constituents within and among discrete OSPW samples.

Abstract Meniscus injury is a common disease in *** it was not treated in time,it leads to osteoarthritis which brings unbearable pain and heavy economic burden to the *** present,meniscectomy and meniscus suture are widely used in the treatment for meniscus ***,It is not ideal for poor self-healing ability of *** recruitment of endogenous stem cells is an attractive option for wounded meniscus *** reduced high-mobility group box 1 protein(HMGB1)can accelerate the regeneration of multiple tissues by endogenous stem cell activation,migration and ***(KGN)has shown to induce the chondrogenesis of the stem ***,no study has explored such effects of HMGB1 and KGN in wounded meniscus ***,in order to improve the regeneration of meniscus,we intend to use a novel bioactive microsphere which was developed by combining fully reduced high mobility group box 1(frHMGB1)and kartogenin(KGN)with alginate gel which slowly release high concentrations of HMGB1 and KGN to activate rat bone marrow stem cells(BMSCs)and promote cell *** results showed that this HMGB1–KGN microsphere released and kept high concentrations of HMGB1 and KGN in the wound area for more than 2 *** vitro experimental results showed that the HMGB1–KGN microsphere can promote cell proliferation via recruiting rat bone marrow stem cells(BMSCs)and activating the BMSCs from G_(0) to G_(Alert) stage as evidenced by cell migration testing and 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine(BrdU)incorporation *** vivo results indicated that this HMGB-KGN microsphere can recruit GFP-labeled BMSCs from tail vein to wounded meniscus and induce these GFP-labeled BMSCs to differentiate into *** results demonstrated that the HMGB1–KGN-containing bioactive microsphere induced cell migration in vitro and recruited the cells to wound area to promote wounded rat meniscus healing in vivo.

Predictors of vitamin D deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease and health: A Mississippi perspective

AIM To identify the predictors of vitamin D deficiency in patients with and without inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS Patients with ulcerative colitis(UC) or Crohn's disease(CD) related diagnostic codes who received medical care at University of Mississippi Medical Center between July 2012 and 2015 were identified. After thorough chart review, we identified patients with biopsy proven IBD who had also been tested for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. We compared these patients to a previously studied cohort of healthy controls who also had vitamin D concentration checked. logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between vitamin d deficiency and UC, CD, race, age, gender and body mass index(BMI).RESUlTS We identified 237 patients with confirmed IBD. Of these, only 211 had a serum 25(OH)D concentrations available in the medical record. The group of healthy controls consisted of 98 individuals with available serum 25(OH)D concentration. 43% of IBD patients were African American(AA). Patients with CD were more likely to have vitamin D concentration checked. Bivariate analysis showed that AA(51% vs 21%, P= 0.00001), subjects with BMI > 30 kg/m^2(39% vs 23% P = 0.01) and CD(40% vs 26%, P = 0.04) were more likely to be vitamin D deficient than vitamin D sufficient. Those with Age > 65 were more likely to be vitamin D sufficient(46% vs 15%, P = 0.04). Multiple regression showed that only BMI > 30 kg/m^2 and AA race are associated with vitamin D deficiency. CONClUSION BMI > 30 kg/m^2 and AA race are predictive of vitamin D deficiency. Gender, age and diagnosis of IBD are not predictive of vitamin D deficiency.
