Effect of Meteorological Data Assimilation on Regional Air Quality Forecasts over the Korean Peninsula

The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry(WRF-Chem),a type of online coupled chemistry-meteorology model(CCMM),considers the interaction between air quality and meteorology to improve air quality *** data assimilation(DA)can be used to reduce uncertainty in meteorological field,which is one factor causing prediction uncertainty in the *** this study,WRF-Chem and three-dimensional variational DA were used to examine the impact of meteorological DA on air quality and meteorological forecasts over the Korean *** nesting model domains were configured over East Asia(outer domain)and the Korean Peninsula(inner domain).Three experiments were conducted by using different DA domains to determine the optimal model domain for the meteorological *** the meteorological DA was performed in the outer domain or both the outer and inner domains,the root-mean-square error(RMSE),bias of the predicted particulate matter(PM)concentrations,and the RMSE of predicted meteorological variables against the observations were smaller than those in the experiment where the meteorological DA was performed only in the inner *** indicates that the improvement of the synoptic meteorological fields by DA in the outer domain enhanced the meteorological initial and boundary conditions for the inner domain,subsequently improving air quality and meteorological *** to the experiment without meteorological DA,the RMSE and bias of the meteorological and PM variables were smaller in the experiments with *** effect of meteorological DA on the improvement of PM predictions lasted for approximately 58-66 h,depending on the ***,the uncertainty reduction in the meteorological initial condition by the meteorological DA contributed to a reduction of the forecast errors of both meteorology and air quality.

Flow and mass balance analysis of eco-bio infiltration system

A structued stormwater infiltration system was developed and constructed at a university campus and monitoring of storm events was performed during a one- year operation period. The flow and pollutant mass balances were analyzed and the overall efficiency of the system was assessed. While significant positive correla- tions were observed among rainfall, runoff and discharge volume （R2= 0.93-0.99; p 〈 0.05）, there was no sig- nificant correlations existed between rainfall, runoff, discharge volume and pollutant load. The system was more effective in reducing the runoff volume by more than 50% for small storm events but the difference between the runoff and discharge volume was significant even with rainfall greater than 10ram. Results showed that the pollutant reduction rates were higher compared to the runoff volume reduction. Average pollutant reduction rates were in the range of 72% to 90% with coefficient of variation between 0.10 and 0.46. Comparable with runoff reduction, the system was more effective in reducing the pollutant load for small storm events, in the range of 80% to 100% for rainfall between 0 and 10mm; while 65% to 80% for rainfall between l0 and 20mm. Among the pollutant parameters, particulate matters was highly reduced by the system achieving only a maximum of 25% discharge load even after the entire runoff was completely discharged. The findings have proven the capability of the system as a tool in stormwater manage- ment achieving both flow reduction and water quality improvement.

For a better understanding of the ongoing debates on the RMB, this paper investigates the effects of exchange rate shocks on output and the current account for China and Japan. We use structural vector auto-regression models and find that yen appreciation reduces current account surpluses while having no strong effect on output in Japan. RMB appreciation, on the other hand,significantly reduces output in China although it has insignificant effect on the current account. Empirical results suggest that, for China, dollar pricing with vertical trade integration seems responsible for the insignificant effect on the current account.

We investigate changes in Asia＇s regional and global trade linkages and their influence on macroeconomic relationships among Asia, Europe and the USA. We first document changes in tripartite trade patterns and discuss sO, lized facts about East Asia ＂s trade structure, with particular focus on the role of China. China plays a critical role in the rapidly expanding intra-Asian trade as an assembly and produetion center that supplies final goods for the advanced economies. However, China ＂s trade shares in final goods with East Asia and in parts and components with Europe and the USA are rising, suggesting that the region ＂s production chains are becoming increasingly integrated into the global business network. Empirical results from a panel vector autoregression model generally confirm increasingly mutual macroeconomic interdependence among East Asia, Europe and the USA. The findings suggest a future role for Asia as an important trade partner and balancing power in the world economy.

Hyperreflective photonic crystals created by shearing colloidal dispersions at ultrahigh volume fraction

Colloidal crystallization serves as one of the most economic and scalable production methods for photonic ***,insufficient optical performance,nonuniformity and low reproducibility remain challenges for advanced high-value *** this study,we optimally formulate a photocurable dispersion of silica particles and apply shear flow to unify the orientation of the colloidal crystals,ensuring high optical performance and *** silica particles experience strong repulsion at ultrahigh volume fractions of 50%but demonstrate low mobility,leading to polycrystalline *** shear flow to the dispersions allows the silica particles to rearrange into larger crystalline domains with a unidirectional orientation along the *** shear-induced structural change produces absolute reflectivity at the stopband as high as 90%and a high transparency of 90%at off-resonant wavelengths with minimal diffusive ***,the strong interparticle repulsion ensures a uniform volume fraction of particles throughout the dispersion,reducing deviations in the optical *** intricately micropattern the photocurable dispersions using ***,the photonic films and patterns can be stacked to form multiple layers,displaying mixed structural colors and multiple reflectance peaks without sacrificing *** superior photonic materials hold promise for various optical applications,including optical components and anticounterfeiting patches.

This paper analyzes the impacts of the US monetary shocks on East Asian countries udng structural VAR *** find that the impacts of the US monetary shocks on domestic interest rates and exchange rates contradict conventional *** conventional exchange rate channel is unlikely to play much role in the transmission of the *** policy shocks to floaters in East Asian countries,excluding *** these countries,the domestic interest rate respond strongly to the *** rate changes,by giving up monetary autonomy,probably because of fear of *** the other hand,the domestic interest rate does not respond much in the countries with fixed exchange rate regime and capital account restrictions,such as China and *** may suggest that the countries with fixed exchange rate regime enjoy a higher degree of monetary autonomy probably with the help of capital account restrictions.

Boosted Lithium-Ion Transport Kinetics in n-Type Siloxene Anodes Enabled by Selective Nucleophilic Substitution of Phosphorus

Doped two-dimensional(2D)materials hold significant promise for advancing many technologies,such as microelectronics,optoelectronics,and energy ***,n-type 2D oxidized Si nanosheets,namely n-type siloxene(n-SX),are employed as Li-ion battery *** thermal evaporation of sodium hypophosphite at 275℃,P atoms are effectively incorporated into siloxene(SX)without compromising its 2D layered morphology and unique Kautsky-type crystal ***,selective nucleophilic substitution occurs,with only Si atoms being replaced by P atoms in the O_(3)≡Si-H *** resulting n-SX possesses two delocalized electrons arising from the presence of two electron donor types:(i)P atoms residing in Si sites and(ii)H *** doping concentrations are varied by controlling the amount of precursors or their mean free *** at 2000 mA g^(-1),the n-SX electrode with the optimized doping concentration(6.7×10^(19) atoms cm^(-3))delivers a capacity of 594 mAh g^(-1) with a 73%capacity retention after 500 *** improvements originate from the enhanced kinetics of charge transport processes,including electronic conduction,charge transfer,and solid-state *** approach proposed herein offers an unprecedented route for engineering SX anodes to boost Li-ion storage.

Investigation of operation and degradation mechanisms in ZnTeSe blue quantum-dot light-emitting diodes by identifying recombination zone

ZnTeSe quantum dots(QDs),recognized as promising eco-friendly blue electroluminescent emitters,remain under-explored in light-emitting diode(LED)***,to elucidate the operation and degradation mechanisms of ZnTeSe blue QD-LEDs,stacked ZnTeSe QD layers with discernable luminescence are designed by varying Te doping concentrations,and the recombination zones(RZs)of the blue QD-LEDs are *** RZs are identified near the hole-transport layer(HTL),confirmed by angular-dependent electroluminescence measurements and optical *** addition,in order to investigate carrier dynamics in the process of recombination,the transient electroluminescence(tr-EL)signals of the dichromatic QD-LEDs are *** a result,it is inferred that the RZ initially formed near the electron-transport layer(ETL)due to the high injection barriers of ***,due to the fast electron mobility,the RZ shifts toward the HTL as the operating current *** the device lifetime tests,the RZ remains stationary while the photoluminescence(PL)corresponding to the RZ undergoes a substantial decrease,indicating that the degradation is accelerated by the concentrated *** this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the operational mechanisms of ZnTeSe blue QD-LEDs.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is one of the most economically serious veterinary pathogens due to its negative effects on livestock and its highly infectious nature via a variety of transmission paths through oral and inhalation routes. Measures to enhance outbreak management can be designed according to analytical results predicted by mathematical models for wind-borne dispersion, an important path of virus transmission. Accurate atmospheric dispersion models are useful tools for properly determining risk management plans, while inaccurate models may conversely lead to accidental loss in two possible ways. Overly strict measures, e.g., slaughter for too wide an area, can cause severe economic difficulties, including irreversible loss of business operations for a number of farms. On the contrary, inestimable loss potentially caused by lax controls is a persistent threat. In this paper, available modelling procedures for forecasting the spread of FMDV, which have been used since the 1970s, each having its advantages and limitations, are reviewed for the purpose of ensuring suitable application in various conditions of any future emergency cases.
