Performance and genetic diversity of 23 provenances of northern red oak(Quercus rubra L.)after 25 years of growth in South Korea

Growth traits and genetic diversity of 23 provenances of Quercus rubra introduced from North America were analyzed in a provenance trial established with a randomized block design in Hwaseong,Gyeonggi,South Korea in *** variables and survival at age 25 were compared with results from early ***,DBH,volume and stem straightness of *** was better than those of the domestic oak(Quercus accutissima).Growth of the Dunham Island provenance from New York was the best among the 23 provenances that of the Eagle River provenance from Wisconsin was *** rate at age25 was on average 52%.The longitude of seed origin and growth of provenance were consistently significantly negatively correlated at all *** of coastal provenances was superior to that of the inland provenances,which were separated by the Appalachian *** diversity and genetic distance among the provenances were evaluated using micro satellite *** allelic frequencies showed high polymorphism in 10 microsatellite loci,and 292 alleles were *** 10 loci,two were commonly found in the 23 *** mean allelic diversity and heterozygosity observed among the provenances were similar to those from the native populations of *** in North ***’s genetic distance among the 23 was estimated and showed that a clear trend between geographic and genetic distances,indicating that some provenances have high genetic diversity with superior growth performance.

Formation of FeMo_2B_2 phase in boron containing 9Cr-1.5Mo ferritic steels

The segregation and diffusion of boron during heat treatments were studied. The influence of boron contents, aging time and applied stress on FeMo2B2 formation was also studied. Finally, the effects of boron contents and FeMo2B2 formation on the high temperature strength were studied. Boron atoms were segregated to prior austenite grain boundary during normalizing treatment. And these boron atoms were slowly diffused into the grain interior during tempering and aging at 700 ℃. The FeMo2B2 phase was only formed after 1,000 h aging at 700 ℃ in alloy containing 196 ppm boron. The formation of FeMo2B2 phase is accelerated by the applied stress. It was expected that the formation of FeMo2B2 is closely related to the redistribution of boron atoms. The tensile strengths at 700 ℃ are increased with the increase of boron contents. However, the formation of FeMo2B2 phase results in lower tensile strength.

Safety and efficacy of tenofovir in chronic hepatitis B-related decompensated cirrhosis

AIM To evaluate the safety and efficacy of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) as a first-line therapy in decompensated liver disease. METHODS We enrolled 174 chronic hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis patients treated with 300 mg/d TDF at six Korean centers. Of the 174 cirrhosis patients, 57 were assigned to the decompensated cirrhosis group and 117 were assigned to the compensated cirrhosis group. We followed the patients for 12 mo and evaluated clinical outcomes, including biochemical, virological, and serological responses. We also evaluated changes in hepatic and renal function and compared the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis groups. RESULTS The 1-year complete virological response(CVR) and Hepatitis B e antigen(HBe Ag) seroconversion were seen in 70.2% and 14.2% in the decompensated cirrhosis group, respectively. The rates of HBe Ag seroconversion/loss and ALT normalization at month 12 were similar in both groups. TDF treatment was also effective for decreasing the level of hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA in both groups, but CVR was higher in the compensated group(88.9% vs 70.2%, P = 0.005). Tenofovir treatment for 12 mo resulted in improved Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD) scores in decompensated group(P < 0.001). Of the 57 decompensated patients, 39(68.4%) achieved CTP class A and 27(49.1%) showed improvement in the CTP score of 2 points after 12 mo of TDF. The observed rate of confirmed 0.5 mg/d L increases in serum levels of creatinine in the decompensated and compensated cirrhosis group were 7.0% and 2.5%, respectively(P < 1.000).CONCLUSION TDF therapy in decompensated cirrhosis patients was effective for decreasing HBV DNA levels and improving hepatic function with relatively lower CVR than in compensated cirrhosis. Thus, physicians should carefully monitor not only renal function but also treatment responses when using TDF in decompensated cirrhosis patients.

Collision tumor of hepatocellular carcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma involving the liver: Case report and review of the literature

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC) with concurrent occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) of the liver is very rare. Only 8 cases have been reported in the literature. Concurrent occurrence of HCC and NEC in the liver is classified as combined type or collision type by histological distributional patterns; only 2 cases have been reported. Herein, we report a case of collision type concurrent occurrence of HCC and NEC, in which primary hepatic NEC was in only a small portion of the nodule, which is different from the 2 previously reported cases. A 72-year-old male with chronic hepatitis C was admitted to our hospital for a hepatic mass detected by liver computed tomography(CT) at another clinic. Because the nodule was in hepatic segment 3 and had proper radiologic findings for diagnosis of HCC, including enhancement in the arterial phase and wash-out in the portal and delay phases, the patient was treated with laparoscopic left lateral sectionectomy. The pathology demonstrated that the nodule was 2.5 cm and was moderately differentiated HCC. However, a 3 mm-sized focal neuroendocrine carcinoma was also detected on the capsule of the nodule. The tumor was concluded to be a collision type with HCC and primary hepatic NEC. After the surgery, for follow-up, the patient underwent a liver CT every 3 mo. Five multiple nodules were found in the right hepatic lobe on the follow-up liver CT 6 mo post-operatively. As the features of the nodules in the liver CT and MRI were different from that of HCC, a liver biopsy was performed. Intrahepatic recurrent NEC was proven after the liver biopsy, which showed the same pathologic features with the specimen obtained 6 mo ago. Palliative chemotherapy with a combination of etoposide and cisplatin has been administered for 4 months, showing partial response.

AIM： To identify the clinical features and outcomes of infrequently reported leptomeningeal carcinomatosis （LMC） of gastric ***： We analyzed 54 cases of cytologically confirmed gastric LMC at four institutions from 1994 to ***： The male-to-female ratio was 32：22, and the patients ranged in age from 28 to 78 years （median,48.5 years）. The majority of patients had advanced disease at initial diagnosis of gastric cancer. The clini-cal or pathologic tumor, node and metastasis stage ofthe primary gastric cancer wasin 38 patients （70%）.The median interval from diagnosis of the primarymalignancy to the diagnosis of LMC was 6.3 mo, rang-ing between 0 and 73.1 mo. Of the initial endoscopic f indings for the 45 available patients, 23 （51%） of the patients were Bormann typeand 15 （33%） patientswere Bormann type. Pathologically, 94% of cases proved to be poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. Signet ring cell component was also observed in 40% of patients. Headache （85%） and nausea/vomiting （58%） were the most common presenting symptoms of LMC. A gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was conducted in 51 patients. Leptomeningeal enhancement was noted in 45 cases （82%）. Intrathecal （IT） chemotherapy was administered to 36 patients-primarily methotrexate alone （61%）, but also in combi-nation with hydrocortisone/± Ara-C （39%）. The median number of IT treatments was 7 （range, 1-18）. Concomitant radiotherapy was administered to 18 patients, and concomitant chemotherapy to seven patients. Sev-enteen patients （46%） achieved cytological negative conversion. Median overall survival duration from the diagnosis of LMC was 6.7 wk （95% CI： 4.3-9.1 wk）. In the univariate analysis of survival duration, hemoglobin, IT chemotherapy, and cytological negative conversion showed superior survival duration （P = 0.038, P = 0.010, and P = 0.002, respectively）. Short-term overlap lamivudine treatment with adefovir dipivoxil in patients with lamivudine-resistant chronic hepatitis B

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy of short-term overlap lamivudine therapy with adefovir in patients with lamivudine-resistant and naive chronic hepatitis B, we compared patients receiving overlap therapy with those receiving adefovir alone. METHODS： Eighty patients who had received lamivudine treatment for various periods and had a lamivudineo resistant liver function abnormality were enrolled. Forty of these patients received adefovir treatment combined with lamivudine treatment for ≥ 2 mo, while the other 40 received adefovir alone. We assessed the levels of hepatitis B virus （HBV） DNA at 0, 12 and 48 wk and serum alanine aminotransferase （ALT） levels after 0, 12, 24 and 48 wk of adefovir treatment in each group. RESULTS： We found serum ALT became normalized in 72 （87.5%） of the 80 patients, and HBV DNA decreased by ≥ 2 Ioglo copies/mL in 60 （75%） of the 80 patients at the end of a 48-wk treatment. HBV DNA levels were not significantly different between the groups. The improvements in serum ALT were also not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION： These findings suggest short-term overlap lamivudine treatment results in no better virological and biological outcomes than non-overlap adefovir monotherapy.
