Hypothyroid effects on astrocytes and microglia in the adult rat hippocampus

BACKGROUND： Thyroid hormones modulate proliferation of astrocytes and microglia depending on maturation stage and localization. Studies have demonstrated that triiodothyronine treatment or thyroidectomy during developmental stages results in morphological alterations and changes in the number of astrocytes and microglia. Little is known about the effects of hypothyroidism on astrocytes and microglia in adults. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of hypothyroidism on morphology and number of astrocytes and microglia in the adult rat hippocampus. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, neuroendocrinological, animal study was performed at the College of Medicine, Hallym University, South Korea between May 2008 and April 2009. MATERIALS： Methimazole, rabbit anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） antiserum, and rabbit anti-lba-1 antiserum were purchased from Sigma, USA. Rabbit anti-GFAP polyclonal antibody was provided by Chemicon, USA. Rabbit anti-lba-1 polyclonal antibody was purchased from Wako, Japan. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP-biotin nick-end-labeling （TUNEL） kit was provided by Roche Molecular Biochemicals, Mannheim, Germany. METHODS： Hypothyroidism was induced in Wistar rats via methimazole administration （0.025%） in drinking water for 5 weeks, starting at 6 months of age. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Following methimazole treatment, hippocampai neuronal death was determined using TUNEL staining. The morphology and number of GFAP and lba-1 immunoreactive cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. Hippocampal GFAP and lba-1 protein levels were detected by Western blot analysis. Serum-free triiodothyronine and thyroxine levels were quantified. RESULTS： TUNEL-positive neurons were not observed in the hippocampus of euthyroid and hypothyroid rats. In situ observation of atomic movement in a ferroelectric film under an external electric field and stress

Atomic movement under application of external stimuli （i.e., electric field or mechanical stress） in oxide materials has not been observed due to a lack of experimental methods but has been well known to determine the electric polarization. Here, we investigated atomic movement arising from the ferroelectric response of BiFeO3 thin films under the effect of an electric field and stress in real time using a combination of switching spectroscop）6 time-resolved X-ray microdiffraction, and in situ stress engineering. Under an electric field applied to a BiFeO3 film, the hysteresis loop of the reflected X-ray intensity was found to result from the opposing directions of displaced atoms between the up and down polarization states. An additional shift of atoms arising from the linearly increased dielectric component of the polarization in BiFeO3 was confirmed through gradual reduction of the diffracted X-ray intensity. The electric-field- induced displacement of oxygen atoms was found to be larger than that of Fe atom for both ferroelectric switching and increase of the polarization. The effect of external stress on the BiFeO3 thin film, which was controlled by applying an electric field to the highly piezoelectric substrate, showed smaller atomic shifts than for the case of applying an electric field to the film, despite the similar tetragonality.

Gastric leptomeningeal carcinomatosis: Multi-center retrospective analysis of 54 cases

AIM： To identify the clinical features and outcomes of infrequently reported leptomeningeal carcinomatosis （LMC） of gastric ***： We analyzed 54 cases of cytologically confirmed gastric LMC at four institutions from 1994 to ***： The male-to-female ratio was 32：22, and the patients ranged in age from 28 to 78 years （median,48.5 years）. The majority of patients had advanced disease at initial diagnosis of gastric cancer. The clini-cal or pathologic tumor, node and metastasis stage ofthe primary gastric cancer wasin 38 patients （70%）.The median interval from diagnosis of the primarymalignancy to the diagnosis of LMC was 6.3 mo, rang-ing between 0 and 73.1 mo. Of the initial endoscopic f indings for the 45 available patients, 23 （51%） of the patients were Bormann typeand 15 （33%） patientswere Bormann type. Pathologically, 94% of cases proved to be poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. Signet ring cell component was also observed in 40% of patients. Headache （85%） and nausea/vomiting （58%） were the most common presenting symptoms of LMC. A gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was conducted in 51 patients. Leptomeningeal enhancement was noted in 45 cases （82%）. Intrathecal （IT） chemotherapy was administered to 36 patients-primarily methotrexate alone （61%）, but also in combi-nation with hydrocortisone/± Ara-C （39%）. The median number of IT treatments was 7 （range, 1-18）. Concomitant radiotherapy was administered to 18 patients, and concomitant chemotherapy to seven patients. Sev-enteen patients （46%） achieved cytological negative conversion. Median overall survival duration from the diagnosis of LMC was 6.7 wk （95% CI： 4.3-9.1 wk）. In the univariate analysis of survival duration, hemoglobin, IT chemotherapy, and cytological negative conversion showed superior survival duration （P = 0.038, P = 0.010, and P = 0.002, respectively）. Effects of vagus nerve preservation and vagotomy on peptide YY and body weight after subtotal gastrectomy

AIM:To investigate the relationship between the function of vagus nerve and peptide YY 3-36 and ghrelin levels after subtotal ***:We enrolled a total of 16 patients who underwent subtotal gastrectomy due to gastric *** surgeries were performed by a single skilled *** measured peptide YY 3-36,ghrelin,leptin,insulin,growth hormone levels,and body weight immediately before and one month after ***:Vagus nerve preservation group showed less body weight loss and less increase of peptide YY 3-36 compared with vagotomy group(-5.56 ± 2.24 kg vs-7.85 ± 1.57 kg,P = 0.037 and 0.06 ± 0.08 ng/mL vs 0.19 ± 0.12 ng/mL,P = 0.021,respectively).Moreover,patients with body weight loss of less than 10% exhibited reduced elevation of peptide YY 3-36 level,typically less than 20% [6(66.7%) vs 0(0.0%),P = 0.011,odd ratio = 3.333,95% confidence interval(1.293,8.591)].CONCLUSION:Vagus nerve preservation contributes to the maintenance of body weight after gastrectomy,and this phenomenon may be related to the suppressed activity of peptide YY 3-36.

Ischemic colitis due to obstruction of mesenteric and splenic veins: A case report

Ischemic injury to the bowel is a well known disease entity that has a wide spectrum of pathological and clinical findings. A sudden drop in the colonic blood supply is essential to its development. We encountered a 41-year-old male patient, who presented with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. A colonoscopy showed markedly edematous mucosa with tortuous dilatation of the veins and a deep ulceration at the rectosigmoid junction. On an abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan and CT angiography, the mesenteric and splenic veins were absent with numerous venous collaterals for drainage. The patient gradually responded to oral aminosalicylate therapy, and was in remission after nine months. In most cases, non-occlusive ischemic injury is caused by idiopathic form and occlusive ischemia is caused by abnormalities of arteries and acute venous thrombosis. However, chronic venous insufficiency due to obstruction of macrovascular mesenteric vein rarely causes ischemia of the bowel. This report describes the first case of ischemic colitis caused by obstruction of the mesenteric and splenic veins.

Treatment and prognosis of hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma based on SEER data analysis from 1973 to 2014

Background: Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEH) is a rare tumor of vascular origin with an unknown etiology, a low incidence, and a variable natural course. We evaluated the management and prognosis of HEH from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program and changes in treatment modalities of HEH over 30 years. Methods: From 1973 to 2014 in the SEER database, we selected patients diagnosed with HEH. We analyzed the clinical characteristics, patterns of management, and clinical outcomes of patients with HEH. Results: We identi ed 79 patients with HEH (median age: 54.0 years;male to female ratio: 1:2.6). The initial extent of disease was local in 22 (27.8%) patients, regional metastasis in 22 (27.8%), distant metas-tasis in 31 (39.2%) and unknown in 4 (5.1%). The median size of primary tumor was 3.85 cm (interquartile range, 2.50 7.93 cm). Among 74 patients with available management data, the most common manage-ment was no treatment (29/74, 39.2%), followed by chemotherapy only (22/74, 29.7%), liver resection-based (13/74, 17.6%), and transplantation-based therapy (6/74, 8.1%). The 5-year cancer-speci c survival rate was 57.8%. Patients who underwent surgical treatment had signi cantly higher survival than those who underwent non-surgical treatment (5-year survival;88% vs. 49%, P=0.019). Multivariate analysis revealed that surgical therapy was the only independent prognostic factor for survival (hazard ratio: 0.20, P=0.040). Conclusions: Resection or liver transplantation is worth considering for treatment of patients with HEH.

Analysis on motion of Earth’s center of mass observed with CHAMP mission

Geocenter motion (GCM) is one important topic for constructing and maintaining the terrestrial reference frame and its applications. GCM is studied from CHAMP with the multi-step approach in this paper. Geometric orbits of CHAMP in 2001-2006 are precisely determined with the kinematic method only from the satel-lite-borne GPS zero-difference data. Then a GCM time series is estimated from the precise kinematic orbits based on the theory of satellite dynamics to fit the CHAMP’s real geometric orbits. We compare the series with the geocenter series used in ITRF2005. Then the GCM series are analyzed with Fourier transform and wavelet transformation. The mean motions within 6 years in TX, TY and TZ direc-tions are respectively 0.8 mm, 2.2 mm, and 7.9 mm. The trends of GCM in the three directions are 0.495 mm/a, -0.004 mm/a, and 1.309 mm/a, respectively. The long-term movement (2001-2006) indicates that the crustal figure is changing. The seasonal variations are the main component which may be excitated by the mass redistribution of Earth’s fluid layer, e.g. ocean, atmosphere and continental water. The inter-annual variations are also found in the GCM series measured with CHAMP.
