Common bile duct stones on multidetector computed tomography:Attenuation patterns and detectability

AIM:To investigate the attenuation patterns and detectability of common bile duct(CBD) stones by multidetector computed tomography(MDCT).METhoDS:Between March 2010 and February 2012,191 patients with suspicion of CBD stones undergoing both MDCT and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) were enrolled and reviewed *** attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT were classified as heavily calcified,radiopaque,less radiopaque,or *** association between the attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT and stone type consisting of pure cholesterol,mixed cholesterol,brown pigment,and black pigment and the factors related to the detectability of CBD stones by MDCT were ***:MDCT showed CBD stones in 111 of 130 patients in whom the CBD stones were demonstrated by ERCP with 85.4% *** attenuation patterns of CBD stones on MDCT were heavily calcified 34(26%),radiopaque 31(24%),less radiopaque 46(35%),and undetectable 19(15%).The radiopacity of CBD stones differed significantly according to stone type(P < 0.001).From the receiver operating characteristic curve,stone size was useful for the determination of CBD stone by MDCT(area under curve 0.779,P < 0.001) and appropriate cut-off stone size on MDCT was 5 *** factors related to detectability of CBD stones on MDCT were age,stone type,and stone size on multivariate analysis(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:The radiopacity of CBD stones on MDCT differed according to stone *** type and stone size were related to the detectability by MDCT,and appropriate cut-off stone size was 5 mm.

Effect of parallel resonance on the electron energy distribution function in a 60 MHz capacitively coupled plasma

In general,as the radio frequency(RF)power increases in a capacitively coupled plasma(CCP),the power transfer efficiency decreases because the resistance of the CCP *** this work,a parallel resonance circuit is applied to improve the power transfer efficiency at high RF power,and the effect of the parallel resonance on the electron energy distribution function(EEDF)is investigated in a 60 MHz *** CCP consists of a power feed line,the electrodes,and *** reactance of the CCP is positive at 60 MHz and acts like an inductive load.A vacuum variable capacitor(VVC)is connected in parallel with the inductive load,and then the parallel resonance between the VVC and the inductive load can be *** the capacitance of the VVC approaches the parallel resonance condition,the equivalent resistance of the parallel circuit is considerably larger than that without the VVC,and the current flowing through the matching network is greatly ***,the power transfer efficiency of the discharge is improved from 76%,70%,and 68%to 81%,77%,and 76%at RF powers of 100 W,150 W,and 200 W,*** parallel resonance conditions,the electron heating in bulk plasma is enhanced,which cannot be achieved without the VVC even at the higher RF *** enhancement of electron heating results in the evolution of the shape of the EEDF from a biMaxwellian distribution to a distribution with the smaller temperature difference between high-energy electrons and low-energy *** to the parallel resonance effect,the electron density increases by approximately 4%,18%,and 21%at RF powers of 100 W,150 W,and 200 W,respectively.

Assessing land use/land cover change impacts on the hydrology of Nyong River Basin, Cameroon

Uncontrolled land use land cover change(LULCC) is impacting watershed hydrology,particularly in tropical watersheds in developing countries. We assessed the extent of LULCC in the southern portion of the Nyong River basin through analysis of three land use maps in 1987, 2000 and2014. LULCC impact on hydrological variables of the Mbalmayo, Olama, Pont So’o, Messam, and Nsimi sub-watersheds of the southern portion of the Nyong River basin were evaluated by using the linear regression modeling and the Mann-Kendall test. This study reveals that dense forest cover decreased by16%, young secondary forest increased by 18%,agricultural/cropland increased by 10%, and built-up area/bare soil increased by 3% from 1987 to *** decrease in dense forest cover at 0.6% per year on average was driven by indiscriminate expansion of subsistence agricultural/cropland through shifting and fallow cultivation farming systems. Nonsignificant trends in total discharge, high flows, and low flows were observed in the large sub-watersheds of Mbalmayo and Olama from 1998 to 2013 with LULCC within the watershed. In contrast, significant decreasing trends in stream discharge(up to-5.1%and-5.9%), and significant increasing trends in high flows(up to 2.1% and 6.3%), respectively, were observed in the small sub-watersheds of Pont So’o and Messam from 1998 to 2013, particularly with increase in agricultural/cropland cover and decrease in dense forest cover. however, we found nonsignificant trends in mean annual discharge and low flows for all and whole watershed with LULCC. The results reveal spatially varying trends of stream discharge, low flows and high flows among the subwatersheds with LULCC within the study *** results suggest that the impacts of LULCC on watershed hydrology are easily detected in small subwatersheds than in large sub-watersheds. Therefore,the magnitude of dense forest cover loss must be significantly greater than 16% to cause significant changes and common trends

BACKGROUND Acral persistent papular mucinosis(APPM)is a rare idiopathic subtype of localized lichen *** date,there have been 40 APPM cases reported worldwide;however,only 7 cases have been reported in the Korean *** SUMMARY A 70-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a solitary pinkish nodule on the dorsum of his right *** the absence of symptoms,the patient wanted to know the exact diagnosis;thus,a biopsy was *** examination of a biopsy specimen obtained from the nodule on the dorsum of his hand revealed orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis with patchy parakeratosis,prominent hypergranulosis,and diffuse dissecting mucinous deposition between collagen bundles,along with some bland-looking spindle cells throughout the *** nodule was histologically diagnosed as an APPM,and an intralesional triamcinolone injection(2.5 mg/mL)was started every 2 *** three sessions of treatment,the patient showed marked *** To the best of our knowledge,this is the first case of a Korean APPM presenting as a solitary nodule that showed a marked response to triamcinolone intralesional *** it is a rare disease,we report this case to contribute to future research on the pathogenesis and treatment of APPM.

Purifying behavior of photocatalytic TiO_2 anodized in nitrate ion containing solution

Mesoporous titanium dioxide films were fabricated on titanium plates by micro-arc oxidation *** increase the photocatalytic activity of the films,NH4NO3 was added to the H2SO4 solution,and anodizing was carried out at high voltages using a DC power *** crystal structure,chemical composition,surface morphology and the optical property of the films were investigated by XPS,XRD,UV-VIS spectroscopy and *** photocatalytic activity of the films was evaluated by the decomposition of aniline blue,and the activity of the films for the degradation turned out to be improved by the additives to the electrolyte *** enhanced photocatalytic activity might result from the increased porosity and nitrate ion incorporation into the anodic films by micro arcing,and thereby the TiO2 layer might exhibit an improved absorption property for the visible light.

Optimal laboratory testing protocol for patients with acne taking oral isotretinoin

BACKGROUND Isotretinoin is a widely prescribed drug for various dermatological conditions,especially *** tests are routinely performed to monitor its side ***,the optimal testing schedule remains *** To evaluate the laboratory monitoring tests and schedules of patients with acne taking isotretinoin to determine the most efficient testing *** We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records from the Dermatology Department of Dongguk University Ilsan hospital from 2005 to 2020 for patients prescribed isotretinoin for acne who underwent monthly blood *** Aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase(ALT),and trigly-ceride(TG)levels significantly changed between 5 and 6 mo when the total prescription period and dose variables were considered *** high-density lipoprotein level also significantly changed between 5 and 6 ***,low-density lipoprotein(LDL)and total cholesterol levels significantly changed between 1 and 2 *** We recommend testing AST,ALT,and TG levels once every 5 to 6 *** also suggest testing LDL and total cholesterol levels during the first and second months.

Formation behavior of anodic TiO_2 nanotubes in fluoride containing electrolytes

Pressure Wave and Fluid Velocity in a Bend-Mode Inkjet Nozzle with Double PZT Actuators

A new concept of bend-mode inkjet nozzle with double PZT (lead zirconate titanate) actuators has been designed and fabricated in the present study. Then the pressure wave and fluid velocity at the nozzle exit have been investigated. The complex pressure behavior inside the channel was solved numerically based on the narrow channel acoustic theory. The two PZTs attached to a rectangular channel were actuated sequentially by setting the waveforms of each PZT to be center-aligned with various pulse widths. As a result, the double PZT actuation is superior to the single PZT actuation in view of strong momentum force and fast dissipation of residual pressure. The maximum fluid velocity at the nozzle exit is observed when the respective pulse widths equal to their optimum pulse widths. The numerical results are supported by the experimental results with the fabricated inkjet device by measuring the speed of meniscus just out of the nozzle.

Traumatic axonal injury of the cingulum in patients with mild traumatic brain injury: a diffusion tensor tractography study

The cingulum,connecting the orbitofrontal cortex to the medial temporal lobe,involves in diverse cognition functions including attention,memory,and *** investigate the relationship between the cingulum injury and cognitive impairment in patients with chronic mild traumatic brain injury,we evaluated the integrity between the anterior cingulum and the basal forebrain using diffusion tensor tractography in 73 patients with chronic mild traumatic brain injury(39 males,34 females,age 43.29±11.42 years)and 40 healthy controls(22 males,18 females,age 40.11±16.81 years).The patients were divided into three subgroups based on the integrity between the anterior cingulum and the basal forebrain on diffusion tensor tractography:subgroup A(n=19 patients)– both sides of the anterior cingulum were intact;subgroup B(n=36 patients)– either side of the anterior cingulum was intact;and subgroup C(18 patients)– both sides of the anterior cingulum were *** were significant differences in total Memory Assessment Scale score between subgroups A and B and between subgroups A and *** were no significant differences in diffusion tensor tractography parameters(fractional anisotropy,apparent diffusion coefficient,and fiber volume)between patients and *** findings suggest that the integrity between the anterior cingulum and the basal forebrain,but not diffusion tensor tractography parameter,can be used to predict the cognitive function of patients with chronic mild traumatic brain *** study was approved by Yeungnam University hospital Institutional Review Board(approval ***-2014-01-425-010)on August 16,2017.
